SWAN COUNT AT ABBOTSBURY

For these swans it is time to stand up and be counted. Every summer up to 1000 mute swans gather to moult on Fleet Lagoon, near Chesil Beach, Dorset.

Every two years volunteers coax them into pens to be ringed and counted.

Swanherds at Abbotsbury Swannery - set up 600 years ago by Benedictine monks - take advantage of the gathering to organise a count.

Steve Groves, deputy swanherd, said the total was 806 this year.

"There were fewer than usual because of the floods. Some birds that would usually visit us have felt safe to stay where they are," he said.

Well, I've managed to kill a few plants this summer--- so I bought some zinnias yesterday. Orange flowers really are pretty, aren't they?

Yes, although I haven't seen that particular variety before. I've seen then in pink, yellow, orange and white. But I'm not looking for annuals this year as I'm trying to establish my garden.
As you know I've been on the lookout for orange perennials for some time now but for some reason I can't seem to find any that I simply must have.
I don't really know what I want yet to be honest. I have seeds of the California poppy but haven't sown them yet.

I did buy some Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' aka Globeflower earlier this week that I planted today. Great colour and although it's nearing the end of its flowering period, there are still some flower buds in it so it will bring me some joy next week.

My most recent additions to the garden.

Two new varieties of Echinacea.
This one is called Harvest Moon, the other variety is named 'The King' (a sweet smelling variety I have yet to take a photo of on its own.)

I also got some Penstemon 'Rich Ruby'. My mom has it in her garden as well which was the main reason I got it.

And I couldn't resist getting some Rudbeckia 'Toto'. I bought this for my mom's birthday this year and was jealous of her at the same time. Again another plant I have to take a pic of.

And I found some more purple to put in the garden, which was a good thing as the Monkshood I planted earlier this week had miraculously disappeared after the gardeners came to plant new shrubs. It should grow back as I took a cutting earlier in the week and had planted some seeds.

Delphinium 'Magic Fountain'.

And here they are on the handlebars of my bike. My cycling garden. From left to right:
Delphinium (Larkspur) 'Magic Fountain', Penstemon 'Rich Ruby', Echinaceas 'Harvest Moon' & 'The King' and Rudbeckia Hirta 'Toto'
