Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands. Two years ago it celebrated it's 2000th anniversary.
I wasn't supposeed to go there this thursday but friends came by and we went to Nijmegen to shop and have dinner.

This is the 1st time I took my camera along to take a few shots of the old city centre. I must go back soon to take more, parts of it are really beautiful!

Medieval Arnhem. Above and below.

attachment.php

While most of the city was heavily damaged in WWII, the medieval cellars that run below one of the busiest shopping streets in Arnhem were found largely intact. 10 Years ago the city council decided to do a survey to see in what state they were and managed to convince shopkeepers and other owners to lease the cellars to the city of Arnhem.

attachment.php

After the survey in which 39 of the cellars were inspected the council decided to restore whatever damage had been done and got a team of archeologists to bring them back to a more original state, getting rid of the debris and the plaster that had been applied to the walls, uncovering the red brick of the walls and exposing the original floors.

attachment.php

Besides restoring the cellars to their original state, they joined the cellars, that previously could only be reached from the street above, by knocking through parts of the walls, creating passages and arches that allow you to walk from one to the next.

attachment.php

They still kept the entrances to the cellars intact but blocked them off. They also created a tunnel to the other side of the street where more cellars are to be found.

Nowadays the cellars are run by volunteers. Every wednesday and friday at 14.00 hrs you can join a guided tour that lasts about an hour (I still have to do that). The cellars have also been modernised to meet practical requirements. At each end public toilets have been added and an airconditioning system has been installed that runs the entire length of the block. You can also rent the cellars for exhibitions, parties, dinners, performances and shows.

What an innovative idea. It should also work to give the citizens a sense of connection to that part of the city. Just a few days ago I listened to "The Cask of Amontillado" on my iPod as I was walking--- that's the way I had visualized the wine cellar where the dread deed was done.
