Re: Kanye West: "I'll Pose Naked"
That's always the first claim, that anyone who mentions race uses it as an excuse for everything. Perhaps Kanye is just a self-victimizer, perhaps he's socially intelligent.
This hurricane could have hit anywhere on the Gulf Coast and the SAME THING would have happened. Unpreparedness, Bush too stupid to know what to do, etc. Was 9/11 about race when he didn't do much about it at first? No. So why does this have to be? Because the town happened to have a large population of lower class blacks?
The term 'race card' is so terribly misused like you just did. Using the race card means trying to use your ethnicity to get ahead, to get leverage. He had nothing to gain by making this statement, and he doesn't live in NO so he wasn't victimized. If Kanye is this inflammatory self-victimizer, why aren't there ANY OTHER EXAMPLES of him using his race?
To me, when I use the term "race card," it's bringing up race in every way possible to a situation where it's inappropriate. Whether it be to advance yourself, insult someone, put blame on someone, etc.
So, with that, I'm not misusing it. Maybe in a sense, but it means different things to different people, I guess.
And exactly, he doesn't live in NO. So he was quick to pass judgement on someone and their alleged careless attitude towards one race.
You know what else gets old? Being told that you're playing a 'race card.' If this past election didn't prove to you that America still has some subsconscious and sytematic problems with race, you're either not paying attention at all or you're choosing to be ignorant.
You don't think it gets old being labeled as racist because you didn't vote for the black candidate? You don't think it gets old saying 'if Obama doesn't win, it's because people are racist?' I mean seriously. It's used for EVERYTHING, and Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are a GREAT example of that. Especially during this election. Barack Obama was a great example. His race was brought up to say "people in America are racist." Obama brought it up to seperate himself from other Presidents and those running for the Presidential nominations. Other's used it to express their racism. It was used in MANY ways. But of course, if he wasn't elected, it was because people are racist. It gets old that if something doesn't go someone's way, it's racist. Its such a touchy subject for some people, but, I'd rather not get into the election/race discussion.
And I agree, some Americans DO still have issues with race. But using race for everything isn't getting anyone anywhere.
But it's about race more often that the dominant culture would like to admit.
I can agree with that.
and in this case, yes it very much was.
I strongly disagree with that.
