San Diego group plans ‘kiss-in’ at Mormon temple

By The Associated Press
07.21.2009 1:33pm EDT
(Salt Lake City) A gay rights group plans to stage a mass kissing demonstration outside the San Diego Mormon temple as a show of support for a gay couple cited for trespassing in Utah after sharing a kiss on church property.

The Empowering Spirits Foundation says the “kiss-in” is intended as a peaceful rally to encourage dialogue between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the gay community.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday evening at the temple near La Jolla, Calif.

It would be the third kissing demonstration held since Matt Aune and Derek Jones were cited for trespassing on the church-owned Main Street Plaza on July 9 in Salt Lake City.

The couple refused to leave the plaza when security guards who saw the kiss said the behavior was inappropriate.

*sigh*

Instead of that, I wish they'd go to the temple and befriend folks. Let them know who they are, let them meet their families. Let some of them see what type of damage they're doing w/ their hatred.Let them see who's suffering when their rights are taking away. It's one thing to damn someone when they're nameless, faceless strangers, it's another thing, and much more difficult, to damn someone you know.

Dialogue my ass. No, the protesters are just determined to show them. I'm all about strategy and this isn't helping. Not by a long shot.

Ass-less chaps mercilessly closing in on the faithful of that badly conceived religion...

This does help. LGBTs do not need the Mormons' approval.

Calling the Mormon faith a badly conceived religion religion is just as bad as what the Mormons did those guys in Utah.

You must not know many Mormons. I know many gay Mormons who have been disowned/cut-off by their families BECAUSE they are gay. If they would do that to family members, why would they extend acceptance to strangers?

Joseph Smith was a fraud. The Mormons didn't have the right to deny LGBTs marriage and they have to make up for it or face the consequences.

I think we should just ignore them all together. It's difficult when they shove their opinions down their throats and work to cut off our rights, but what are we going to do? Dialogue is wonderful, but they have to be willing to talk and the majority of Mormons believe that they are right and are set in their opinion that homosexuality is wrong.

Many of them can't even acknowledge or befriend gays because they view it all as sinful. In other words, they can't love the sinner but hate the sin.

If I lived near the temple I'd go just to see the event. They should have a kissing booth set up for people that aren't in relationships though. :)

Alpha, let me tell you a story about a woman named Marge.

Marge owned a very popular gay restaurant in West Hollywood called "El Coyote." It's been open since the 60s. Her family has owned the place the whole time and she's been there the whole time.

For years, Marge served the regulars, most of whom were gay, pouring margaritas, serving nachos and working with a gay staff. She's been to their houses, she's been to their weddings and commitment ceremonies. She's been their friend.

But Marge is also a Mormon and when the Mormon church told her to donate money to TAKE AWAY THE RIGHTS of her friends, her staff, her loyal customers, she did it.

And when called out on her treason, she tearfully said she'd do it again.

Getting to know those... "people" did jack shit for the community.

However... the gays didn't take it lying down.. they rose up. They organized boycots and stormed the place. Business at El Coyote is down 40% and many of her staff have been laid off. All for a measly $100 donation to the "Yes on 8" campaign.

Next time a vote like this comes up... maybe Marge and the MANY Mormon business owners will take pause.. and be afraid to give money to hurt us knowing that we'll find them and hurt them back. They can't be a bit worried someone will be angry, they have to be SO FUCKING SCARED that gay people will find out and come for them. They have to be terrified of us.

Because you see, Alpha, fear and hate is the only language Mormon scum cunts like Marge will EVER understand. It's not like Mormons are human.

You go and try being friends with those... "people." But heed our experience.. you can't be their friend... it's time the gay community stopped being so fucking nice and fought their enemies the only way they understand.

This does help. LGBTs do not need the Mormons' approval.

WE ALL need either a majority of voters to approve, need Congress to approve, need the President to approve, or need SCOTUS to approve. So far, it isn't working out too well. I'm not discounting anyone or turning my back on anyone. No threat should be treated w/ disdain, especially when that threat has money. Also, ee have a JUBBER whose fam is Mormon and they seem supportive. Clearly, some can be see our side as well.

However, I won't be able to persuade the majority of JUBBERS that we can persuade religious folks or that we need to, so I'll concede that point. We don't need the Mormons' approval to win this fight.

Nonetheless, this kiss in is still a bad strategic move. First, this action will piss off other voters. Like it or not, the majority of U.S. citizens are religious. This kiss in will probably come across as a direct attack on faith and churches. Second, homosexuality is already depicted as being all about sex. Love is never factored in, families are never factored in. It's all about hooking up. This doesn't help that image. Third, the resources used for this kiss in would've made a more positive impact elsewhere. The individuals who have been recruiting folks to participate could've used their time to educate the surrounding community about LGBT issues. The couples who will participate could've spent their time teaching other LGBT folks about ways to protect their legal rights, ways to go around the law. Additionally, how much money was spent to advertise this event, to get people to come? This money could've been used in another campaign, or to fund a crt case.

What is there to gain from this? You showed them. Fuck you, I'll do whatever I want to do. Maybe it'll make some of us feel better. Well, I'd like to think we're after more than healing a bruised ego. I'd like to think we're after more than the sweet taste of revenge.

This isn't about making Mormons like us. It's about making them scared to ever donate money to hurt us again. They kicked a hornet's nest.

Now they're crying like babies as they get stung. This isn't about Revenge.. this is about cause and effect.

Honey. You're confusing the means with the end. If LGBTs don't stand up for themselves -like they have in the past- we won't get anything done. These people have wronged us. If we show our dissent at least they know we mean business.

The other stuff we also have to do, but winning the war for emancipation by being nice to everybody isn't going to work. If it did, we wouldn't be in this situation in the first place.

make sure to read the letter that was sent to the Mormons. :)

Do you mean me? If so, I always read the links, and all the posts, before I respond. To me, it's common courtesy, if you took the time to incl the link, it's probably important to the subject matter. Although the letter is well written and makes several good points, that doesn't change my opinion about the kiss in. Again, dialogue my ass!

I don't think I'm confusing anything, but I guess we'll see. The kiss in is going to happen, we'll see if there's headway arising from it. Maybe this will work better than the boycotts, but I won't hold my breath.

You have a point there. A less courteous more direct letter with a somewhat more threatening undertone would have been far better.

Man...that just fucking blows my mind that someone can reject a kid because they are gay, or go to gay weddings/have gay friends but not support them. fuck...
