But not so; Cruz is the son of an American mother. He is a "natural-born" citizen of the US and thus (along with his middle-agedness and near lifelong residency here) makes him eligible. It doesn't matter that his father was Cuban and he was born in Canada. Whether or not Republicans would vote for a "Son of the White North" is another matter.
Ironic, we on the Left (the Right side of history
) would become Birthers all of a sudden around a Presidente Cruz. I read in the NYT an OP-ED piece on the Cuban Adjustment Act that is the basis for the "Wet foot, dry foot" policy on Cuban immigration. Cubans coming across to Florida will be turned back, unless....the set foot on dry land. Then, they not only can stay, but have a fast track to a green card, support and U.S. citizenship. Cruz' anti-immigration stand understandably does not play well to the Hispanic voters at large, which he would need to win a national election. Marco Rubio, conversely, has come out for immigration reform, which makes him anathema among Conservatives.
