Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

I love LG, and all those crazy outfits are one of the reasons why I like her so much. I don't think she's trying to "shock" people, but rather dressing to impress, like drag queens do. It's fashion, art &theater rolled into one.

When David Bowie and Elton John (two of her influences) hit the scene, a lot of people didn't "get" them and/or denounced their costumes as mere attempts to "shock" people.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

As a few other JUBers pointed out, Madonna's various costumes were about titilation and sex appeal. Gaga's image is more in line with Bowie and Elton- the ideal that you can look however you want and to embrace your differences.

To be honest, every music genre has musicians "playing dress-up" to stand out. Country musicians rock the cowboy hats and rhinestones. Heavy Metal has spikes and leather. Rap music is about gold chains and tons of "bling". Emo was built on skinny jeans and eyeliner. Rock music has left piles of spandex and bandannas in it's wake.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

“What’s the point of the meat?” DeGeneres, who’s vegan, asked.

“Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian,” Gaga responded. “As you know, I am the most judgment free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations but for me... if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”

Oh and by the way, Gaga added, she's “not a piece of meat.”
This, like much of what comes out of Gaga's mouth, is a bunch of hot air. Why can't she just admit "My stylists came up with the idea of a meat dress, and I liked it, so I wore it"? You don't see Bjork going around saying "Ah, yes. I wore the now-infamous swan outfit because I wanted to conceptualize the interpretation of the metaphor of the plight of the Tsáchila tribe, indigenous to the canton of Santo Domingo in Ecuador." She wore it because she fuckin' wanted to, and Gaga is no different. That recent Gaga interview where she claimed to possess a flawless mental database of the entirety of fashion history was the icing on the irritatingly pretentious cake.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

LOL. I knew you would show up. Got anymore silliness to say? (!) Gaga has a right to express herself and have a description of why she does what she does. It's funny, all your posts on this matter are hot air.
This isn't the Lady Gaga worship thread, sweetheart. Please stop obsessing over me and my posts.

I rest my case. :D

P.S. Madonna's greatest strength was the ability to market herself. :=D:

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

I think I need to tell you once again, Gaga isn't even my favorite artist, nor do I listen to pop music all that much. I'm not worshipping her. I just think your criticism are without merit.
Whenever anybody says anything even remotely critical about Gaga, you burst into the thread shrieking about how they aren't entitled to their opinion (unless, of course, their opinion is "Lady Gaga is the best artist ever and everything she does is original and nobody will ever be as good as her ever").

If you don't like what I have to say and you aren't willing to acknowledge the fact that my opinions are reasonable and valid, then put me on ignore rather than following me around and responding to every single one of my posts. For someone who's in love with Gaga's credo of liberation, you sure hate freedom of speech.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

No I don't. Nice try. I came in here originally expressing my opinion without even reading what others have said in this thread. Notice my first post. I never said that she was the best artist. And I didn't say people weren't entitled to their opinion. Talk about putting words into my mouth. That makes you look pompous.

You're the one that goes from these threads to criticize here... you go from thread to thread. I've seen it all from you. Where was I saying you should be silenced? You're now making silly assumptions.

Yet another silly post making dumb assumptions. I mostly listen to reggaeton. Not pop.

I'm done feeding the troll. ;)

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

I don't get the need to have yet another thread about Lady Gaga.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

I don't get the need to have yet another thread about Lady Gaga.

Because she wasn't being talked about enough in Hot Topics, of course!

Beyonce stans (and haters, detractors, what have you) at least keep it to a couple of topics... in the Entertainment section. But of course, she didn't stand in front of millions and declare independence for the LGBT community, so of course she wouldn't be getting all this free publicity from us.

I'd go on and on and on like Badu, but i'm bored, and have to go to work in an hour. Ta!

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

I find her music utterly abhorant and I find her vulgar pandering to gay men for proffit insulting. She is a vapid waste of oxygen.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

Her OTT gimmicks and weird shtick are going to get old. Right now she's at the point in her career where she's at a ridiculous level of popularity, and so everything she does–no matter how awful it is–gets mindlessly embraced by her sheep (oh, excuse me...'monsters') and by the mainstream music industry, who thinks that she's a safe bet for what people want to hear. She's existing solely on hype right now.

No one as cartoon-y, campy, odd and obnoxious as a "Lady Gaga" lasts beyond their initial wave of popularity. Bowie, Mercury and Elton were embraced when they took off the makeup and weird getup's, and started dressing down in more conventional attire, but people embrace eccentric men to cut that bullshit out. That doesn't happen as easily for female performers. Fans of campy female acts want to be that way indefinitely…but on the other hand, once the casual public has had enough of that silliness, they start to shun it. If she takes off the bird cage and stops being wheeled in on hannibal lector gurney's, her fans won't find her as interesting. But if she keeps up her weirdo gimmicks, she'll become tiresome to the overall public. So really Gaga has backed herself into a corner.

She's like a modern day, solo version of the Backstreet Boys/Spice Girls in terms of mindless hype at their peak. Another tide will turn soon enough, and when it does, I see her being turned against (and if the next wave is one that is the opposite of silly thump-thump dance music…her fall will be especially dramatic, because she'll represent the face of all that is being rejected.)

She may be ruling the world now, but people tend to get sick of the her backlash is coming; mark it.

Correction:
She may be ruling the world now, but [STRIKE]people tend to get sick of the[/STRIKE] her backlash is coming; mark it.
Hence the need to release four singles before her album even came out. She's scrambling to regain her footing in the industry.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

She has two singles, and leaked songs because they were about to be leaked anyway. To me, she seems genuinely excited to share her new material with people.

She hasn't lost her footing (yet, anyway) ... she has been doing very well for herself the last two years.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

Stephani Germanotta is a performance artist and singer who (with a friend) created a character called "Lady Gaga." She has spoken in the past about all this.

I very much doubt she had any idea how successful that character would become.

If you watch the YouTube videos of her performing in New York clubs before she became "Gaga," you'll see the real person behind the persona: a slightly overweight, semi-attractive young girl with long stringy brown hair who is usually badly dressed.

I suspect that the male friend who helped her to create the Gaga persona, had a background in performance art and just happened to stumble on a winning formula.

That being said, I am many decades past her audience demographic, but I do enjoy her. Some of her original lyrics are beautifully poetic (mainly the ballads) and many of her techno songs are quite enjoyable. It also helps that I very much enjoy the outrageous. She is perhaps the world's most famous drag queen, and I love drag queens, on and off the stage.

Yes, she is a mishmash of Madonna and several other entertainers, but she sort of acknowledges that. (Born That Way is certainly closely related to Express Yourself.)

I'm not sure how long her schtick will keep her successful. I suspect she will reinvent herself and her style as the years pass. Whather that will work for her is a multi-million dollar question.

Re: The Official LADY GAGA Mega-thread

We're not talking about The Fame here... If you think Born This Way can be described as an "incredibly vapid and shitty dance music" album either you haven't heard it yet or you're utterly [STRIKE]dumb[/STRIKE] deaf.

I said I was disappointed with the album which would ENTAIL that I HAVE it.

Just more calculated bullshit by the industrys most overrated performer.

Amusingly enough, seeing her live (twice) is what started me souring on her; not only did she just stop pretending she was singing over pre-recorded vocals by the end, but her dancing (or lackthereof) was unintentionally hilarious.

All flash, no dash.

NEXT.

Re: I don't "get" Lady Gaga

Well, she certainly seems to enjoy her vagina.

Look, I'm "old" too, in terms of her targeted demographic, but I don't buy that as an excuse for finding the message in her music perplexing at best.

I watched her concert on HBO, and enjoyed parts of it.

From what I can tell, her message is one of contradictions. She hates the spotlight; she craves the spotlight. She doesn't want to be thought of as a sex object, but acts like one whenever possible.

Plus, she appeals to all the people out there that think of themselves as freaks. (Which is a pretty healthy chunk of the market) The entire "express yourself, be who you are and fuck what everyone else thinks" has been done before - not only by Madonna but by countless acts before her.

But, if you're 18 years old, these are entirely new concepts. She's just up'd the visuals a bit. (Although, if you ask me, her stage show is a mess...)

Fame monster ? More of a sales gimmick. Societal rebellion rung up in air-conditioned comfort in malls, or downloaded in the safety of your bedroom.

That's not a criticism, it's just good business.
