No doubt many of you have heard of this by now, but LA will open the nation's costliest school in the coming weeks. The Robert F. Kennedy community schools cost taxpayers $578 million, houses only 4200 students, and displays extravagant architecture and design flourishes most schools can only dream of. This is the third school in the LA district with an insane price tag, with the other two clocking in at $377 and $232 million respectively. The three were built using money from a $20 billion bond issue, as were 131 other schools.

One can only imagine how many more schools could have been built if the budgets were more reasonable, or how many jobs could have been save had this money also been allotted for staff spending.

Well this is nice, this is going to help California & America so much. I mean lets pour more money into LA where less then 50% of the students will graduate high school. Because obviously thats the best way right?

This is the reason why California is financially in such a rut. Because of fiscal irresponsibility.

^ Are you kidding???

Last year we were in a MASSIVE recession -- and the ONLY large source of capital was from GOVERNMENT...

HELL YEAH!!! Lets build some AWESOME schools, fix our infrastructure -- and let that money trickle down into the hands of us citizens so that we can SPEND money...

SIMPLE MACRO ECONOMICS learned in a much LESS fabulous school than that one...

Ok you built a school. Instead of paying teachers who are being laid off like crap. You pay union workers to build a school which will look like crap next year. Ok great. But this isn't tackling the little issue of how only 50% of students in LA county will even pass high school.
I'm all for building new infrastructure. We should have built 5 new schools to support 1,000 each. Or better 10 schools to support 500 each. Why? Because having educated young people is our future! We need to raise the education bar, and do it effectively. We do not need bamboo atriums in our schools! We need an environment that is prone to educating and learning. We don't need a golden plated library.
So Fuck the fabulousness. Who the fuck cares that it looks good! This is inefficient and pathetic.

A school is a investment for our children's future. OUR WORLDS FUTURE! What kind of investment is it when barely any of them will ever pursue higher education? Ineffective, sad and destructive. I see this school as a gold plated turd.

I don't think we disagree much at all...

But I'm not going to bitch about a REALLY COOL school -- it'll raise property values of the homes in the district, which will raise the tax basis, etc...

IF I were presented with different ways to build schools from the $20B bond, I'd probably go more YOUR route...

So -- I guess that those people that LIVE there can vote the guy out, or not...

In the meantime, they've already spent the money -- lets celebrate the results...

Here's the problem though; it doesn't matter how nice the school is if only half the students graduate and all of the same problems exist.

You shouldn't celebrate this school, you should shake your head and walk away.

Sigh I just hope this decreases the drop out rate if only by a little bit.

No doubt the school is located in an upscale district of LA filled with rich families that can afford big property taxes to pay for such things. Sorry East LA, maybe next year. . .

I guess we have a different point of view...

Its kind of like when your partner comes home in a WAY NICER and MORE EXPENSIVE car than he needs (cars are just transportation -- right?)...

Do you shake your head and walk away -- or do you decide, What the hell?, he already bought it -- be happy WITH him...

PERSONALLY, I think the school sounds INCREDIBLE -- and HOPE that it works out well for that school district...

My only complaint is the excess cost of the architecture. State-of-the-art learning facilities with accessible and relevant technology for future generations of students is fine.

Clearly, the price tag was excessive. There are a lot of California teachers without jobs right now because of budget cuts. These students have a lot to benefit from this school, but there's also thousands upon thousands of more students who are currently suffering in overcrowded classrooms without their teachers.

Jesus is THAT what that is?

I've been looking at that thing for ages and wondering what the heck it was every time I drive past it on the 101.

And no, Spiff, it's not in an affluent area... it's actually close East LA... just east of Downtown next to the 101.

I figure if we can invest some money into schools... we can make going to school worth it and we can have more students graduate. To be honest... I'm a lot happier about this half billion dollars than the how many hundred billion wasted on the war in Iraq?

Wow couldnt figure out wtf that was for the longest time it certainly looks impressive on the outside and if spending that much money on a school will help get students even a little bit excited about attending it. I think its money well spent good job LA

How about spending some of that kind of money on the salaries of teachers who do their jobs well?

While not defending the cost of the school at all, I would say there's always a difference between capital and operational spending. Capital $ tend to be easier to come by, are typically restricted in use, and don't have to be renewed annually to be sustainable.

I consulted on a capital project (not anything of this magnitude), and predictably some people griped that the $ could have been spent on raises instead. But they really couldn't have been - the funding was 99% restricted to one time capital and would not have been available for operating use. The project in question was also key to a growth strategy that in 5 years time would make the organization far more secure.

Not saying that was the case here, just that cap and operating are two different things.

Where did the money go?

Who has it now and what are they doing with it?

I heard on the news yesterday that the $20 billion was in voter approved bonds and the money could not be used elsewhere. I looked at LA Times but their story was the same as the OP. I heard it on MSNBC so will try to find it there.

^^

I went to http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ and found in their video section this video. Sorry I don't know how to put any videos other then youtube.

Inside L.A.’s controversial $578 million school

They said that the money did not come from the districts building fund but from the bond election and therefore the money could not be used for anything else. Nothing, nada, zilch.

We've spent over a trillion dollars blowing big rocks into smaller rocks in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.I think it's great they spend some money here for a change.About fucking time.

At least now, the kids will have a nice high school to go to before they are killed for corporate America..

With a good enough education, maybe some of those young men and women will have more options than joining the military.

(and by the way... i'm not slagging the military.. but I think that our services should be nothing but people who WANT to be there, not augmented by people who had no other choice)

And from a post above from someone in LA, it's not in an affluent area. So the poorer kids have a more than nice school to go to. Like it has been said, the Taj Mahal.
