Okay, so I started running again after nearly taking 3 months off from running, and I also put on like 25 pounds since I stopped running in January. Anyway, so I went running for a few days last week, and then I woke up the other morning and my left leg was very stiff and tense. And I though nothing of it, and I went running and my leg began to hurt, and this was a running burn, it was an actual pain. I thought I was having a "charlie horse" so I stopped, and I walked the rest of the way home. And yesterday and today my leg is still very stiff.

any possible solutions?

but why would my leg be stiff? do i need to just keep running it off? I eat banana's like everyday.

Where exactly is it hurting? It could be shin splints, a torn ACL, or any range of things causing pain. Also, warming up followed by stretching is a necessity for any physical activity. Also, include how much you run and what you run on (treadmill/concrete/track/etc).

I run in my local neighborhoods. and since it's been 3 months, I've only be warming up my body, so to speak by doing a mile and half a day.

And the pain shot up the whole back side of my leg, from my ankle to above my back of knee. And the leg has been very stiff ever since. I tried going running earlier this evening...but my leg couldn't do it.

Well you're lucky it isn't shin splints, because those can be a bitch to get rid of. Sounds to me like you just didn't stretch up enough judging from your description of the pain. It might be a few days for you to get back into full-on running but I suggest walking to loosen it up if you can. Also do some calf stretches very very slowly, and try to hold it until it doesn't hurt anymore and then go a little farther. Let us know how it is tomorrow. :)

The best advice would be to not continue running. You have tried and said it was too painful. That is your body telling you there is a problem. Continuing to run right now would be causing more harm than good. As a runner I know from personal experience that running through an injury is the worst thing you can do and will only make the problem worse. To me, it seems you have some type of injury. I would guess a muscle strain or pull as Ive had them before and had the same symptoms you describe. I would ice the area and if you dont feel improvement within about a week or so it would probably be wise to see a doctor or physical therapist, if not now as they would know better what the problem might be.

We I was running...I had one of those on my right shin...and I can still feel the bump on my bone from time to time. I just thought, I needed a new pair of running shoes to get rid of the pain, turned out I was wrong.

Any advice on how to treat the pain after a run?

Do you mean you are feeling the shin splint back right now? and you've tried new shoes?

Runna66 gave you good advice. Don't run if it's painful, period. Muscle stiffness is one thing, but a strong pain from your ankle to knee = break time. Not only can you prolong the time it takes for whatever it is to heal, you can exacerbate the problem and perhaps cause a tear in an aggravated tendon (posterior tib, peroneal or achilles) if that's the culprit.

I had sharp pains in my legs, ignored them and continued running, only to find out it was an inflamed achilles tendon that put me out of commission for nearly two months. Take her easy. ;)

earlier this year, i started to run on sidewalks and asphalt and the same thing happened to me. My shins were killing me. I assumed it was because i hadn't ran on a regular basis so I was running through the pain, which is exactly the wrong thing to do. I took a few days off, bought new shoes and started running on softer surfaces such as dirt trails or school tracks and it has gone away....
