I believe that some people are fragile, and do not view differing opinions as an opportunity to learn, and understand how others think and feel. They see differing opinions as a direct challange or affront (attack) on a personal level, and elevate their response in an attempt to force or bully others into their point of view. Is the glass half empty or is it half full?? Both viewpoints are correct, but depending on a persons past experiences in life, some will see it as half empty ( negative thinkers), while others will see it half full ( positive thinkers). I usually back off of discussions when it appears obvious that the other person is taking things on a personal level, feeling attacked, or affronted. I am not willing to allow another persons insecurity, or overactive defensive posturing to lower the conversation to name calling or personal attacks. It is a disagreement, a difference of opinion, nothing more, nothing less and has no influence on the individual, after all, its only a discussion.
