Lex's 365 Forgotten Retro Songs for 2010

Here's a retro song that I loved from1980: J Geils Band - "Come Back"

If I'm overstepping your thread please let me know, I don't want to upset you.

^ Always liked that one. Despite how uncomfortable Peter Wolf looked lip-synching. He got better at it quickly, though. :)

I don't recall Pylon putting out anything as of late, but I might have missed it. I do think they reunited for some shows, though.

Odd that somebody like Thomas Dolby would release a live clip as a music video. I saw him on his last tour, where he played completely solo. He built up all the drum and rhythm loops from scratch, then play the melodies and sing over top. It was really cool.

Day 86 - "One of Our Submarines" - Thomas Dolby

I don't which is more fun - hearing the band list their favorite TV shows ("QUIN-CY!!!") or seeing Henry Rollins as a teenager.

Day 88 - "TV Party" - Black Flag

Pylon was a reissue, Chomp More on DFA Records in 2009.

Day 94 - "Diana D" - Chuck Mangione. Yes, Chuck Mangione. How he got Zbignew Rybczynski to direct a video for him is a bit beyond me...

Day 95 - "Stay" - Oingo Boingo

I love the write up of the video on youtube, which reads (in its entirety) "promo for the oingo boingo track 'stay' contains some midgets". That's it. Is that a warning in case you're afraid of midgets, or an advertisement in case you have a thing for them?

Day 96 - "Ten" - Madhouse

Madhouse was one of the infinite number of Prince side projects in the 80s. Both Madhouse albums featured jazz-funk instrumentals identified only by number. If you read the sleeve of the second album (16), you're told the line-up is Levi Seacer Jr (b), Matt Fink (key), Eric Leeds (sax, fl) and John Lewis (dr). This isn't so. Apparently, Prince held jam sessions with all of them, got the basic ideas for all the tracks, and then rerecorded everything except the horn parts himself. (Those actually WERE by Eric Leeds.) That explains why the tracks are somewhat less "free" or jazzy in nature, but they're still damned neat.

Why this song is on youtube is a mystery to me. Prince usually yanks all of his stuff the second somebody posts it. Enjoy it while you can, kids.

Day 99 - "Buffalo Gals" - Malcolm McLaren

The local music video show played this one a lot. It didn't strike me as weird that a goofy white Brit was hanging out at the late-night double dutch and body popping competitions at the time. Being young has its advantages. RIP Malcolm.

Day 101 - "Say You Will" - Blanket of Secrecy

They weren't kidding with the band name. The band was photographed only once, in shadow, for the back of the album jacket. To this day, nobody has stepped forward to claim responsibility for being in this band.

Day 102 - "Static" - Planet P (Project)

The mouth at the opening of the video creeped the hell out of me.
