The title is pretty self-explanatory. In your own words, no cut and pastes, can you tell me why you think Obama will be a good candidate to vote for based on the issues, and his accomplishments.

No bravado. No bashing of other candidates. Just real, substantive reasons why Obama should be President because of his track record on the issues, ideas, and proposals.

I'm curious.

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Easy! He's a BLACK MAN with the middle name of HUSSEIN that somehow rose from virtual obscurity to be the democratic nominee, shooting past HRC who everyone thought had a lock on it. You can't tell me that's not a huge fuckin' accomplishment by itself, and the very definition of "leadership".

Absolutely amazing, and I can't wait to vote for him. Bring it on!!!

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Also, he inspires people. There's no doubt about that. And we need a leader who inspires right now, no matter what their position on any issue is.

That's an attribute. Not an accomplishment. Just like these people:

Sorry but it sounds like you're baiting. You're asking for an unvarnished assessment of the mans accomplsihments, then qualify it by saying what you think those accomplishments should be.

You can't have it both ways.

"We have a presidential nominee who knows what America must do to fulfill the promise of this new century. We have a nominee who knows the power of truth and honor. We have a nominee who will be the next great President of the United States".

"He is a leader who inspires the best in others and he will bring out the best in our country".

"He inspires through his vision, and is a leadership genius".

Are those quotes about Obama? Nope. That's Condi Rice talking about then, Texas Governor George W. Bush in 2000 in the first quote. Laura Bush the 2nd quote. And author Carolyn Thompson in her book on George Bush titled of same name.

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

inspiring someone is most certainly an accomplishment, and a rare one at that.

Not listed in the abstract it most certainly is not. If one said, "he inspired ME", then that accomplished something.

Saying "he inspires" others, is empty rhetoric. Everyone in 2000 was saying how George Bush "inspired" others. Is that "an accomplishment"? Or just a buzzword then?

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

if he IS in fact giving obama a chance and is truly contemplating whatever gets said, kudos to him.

Marley, you and I always don't agree but you should know by now I usually have "a point" to make and am not interested in "trolling or baiting". I have a reason for my actions.

My point, is the exact theme of this thread. Tell me why should I, or anyone vote for Obama based on what he has done. Give me an example. Or two.

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Senator Barack Obama, from Illinois, and the 2008 presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party as the next President of the United States…

…He convinced me, without my knowing/sensing whether he'd have a serious shot at winning his party's nomination, to go ahead and vote "Uncommitted" in the Jan. 15 primary in my home state of Michigan. I was thinking, at the time, that it may be a waste to vote in the Democratic Party primary because of the state's Democratic Party having violated Democratic National Committee rules. But I went ahead and did so, and expressed my vote "Uncommitted" with him in mind. Everything else that followed blew away—and I'm very satisfied with—my expectations. I applaud Sen. Obama's grass-roots efforts to mobilize new voters, and voters from all sectors, because I am stunned by the state of the Bush administration's performance in today's economy, the war in Iraq, and healthcare.

Well please excuse my fellow posters to your thread here.

First you ask a general question, then you attempt to quantify it.

Thus the reason that many think that you're doing nothing more than baiting.

I'm on record here, even as a Moderator, for having voted for and supported (even as a delegate to the Texas Democratic Party), for Senator Clinton.

But to answer your question, here's my list:
  • Upstart Senator from Illinious who gives a dramatic address before the Democratic National Convention in 2004.
  • Tosses his name into the ring in mid 2007 against many more accomplished Democratic colleagues for the office of POTUS.
  • Wins the Iowa Caucus with a resounding "vision" and scares off any eventual competition for that position save one.
  • Goes on to inspire a wide range of demographics, that heretofore were only marginally interested in that weeks results of American Idol.
  • Democratic Party coffers began to fill because of his presence.
  • Voter registration drives reach a record high.
  • Some people's began to question the second coming of Jesus.
  • We learned through his association with impassioned reverends what it means to play the victim, instead of getting off one's ass and doing anything about it. Conspiracy theories not withstanding.
  • The "Kool-Aid" reference has resurfaced for further examination, and dicussion.
  • Race relations have resurfaced for further examination and discussion.
  • He marginally won a nomination against the first qualified Female candidate for POTUS.
  • The current GOP, and Republican opponent don't know how to deal with all of that without appearing "out of step" with the American Public.
I'd say that his accomplishments, at this point, pretty much amount to a coup. ..|

I'd suggest you deal with it, or suggest reasons why we should all vote for McCain.

I'm afraid that you might be a little late to the party on this one. ..|

Easy! He's [someone who] somehow rose from virtual obscurity to be the democratic nominee
And this is the part that seems more than just a little strange to me. Even before he took the oath as a Senator he was being anointed by some as the New Great Hope of the Democratic Party. He hadn't spent a day in the US Senate before people were screaming that he should be the next POTUS. And yet, as the video clips in this thread indicate, a "random sampling" of his supporters have no clue about what he's done in the last three-ish years.

Eh, whatever. We'll see what happens.

Gentlemen, I have cleaned up quite a bit of nonsense in this thread. I don't like playing Holly Housekeeper, so let's please elevate the level of posting from the personal attack plane to something at least resembling discussion. Thanks.

"Somehow," shrugs off explaining the substance of your point with the vaguest possible word, perfectly fitting the Obama profile. It, apparently, doesn't matter to you how he rose from virtual obscurity to clinch the Democratic nomination, "shooting past HRC," only that he did it.

The first black man gaining the nomination is a major accomplishment but it's not one that, in and of itself, says anything about whether or not he has the qualifications to perform successfully as President, what he'll fight for and what he'll shirk on behalf of Americans. All it says is he knows how to fight for his own advancement. If I'm going to vote for him I'll need more than that.

Yes I've seen what Obama inspires.

And you're absolutely right, it doesn't matter what one's position on any issue is.

I know too much of human history to not be concerned about what I've seen.

Not much in the way of personal accomplishment shown here; most of what you list is the product of a campaign staff and good PR firm . . . he was just their product . . . and they chose well; his race and name are hardly accomplishments but have been used well by those 'selling him.'

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Other than being the first black man to become the nominee of a major political party I don't think he has done much. Thats not to say he's unqualified to be president as when I think of his last opponent or his next the only accomplishments that come to mind for them are a clumsy attempt at a healthcare plan for the last and getting shot down over Vietnam for the next.

Clearly he has run the best organized campaign of the last three standing and to the extent that translates into a successful WH operation he is the best man for the job.

If Mrs. Clinton or John McCain ran their WH like they ran their campaigns what a mess we'd all be in. :(

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Ummmm so I thought this would be a great thread for me because one of the things that's always rubbed me the wrong way about him is that he seems all polish and no package and that I've yet to hear anything he has done or plans to do rather than rhetoric...... but I still see nothing other than the events of the primary. Can anyone tell me other than be a one term senator what the hell this man has done? Like what senate comittees has he been on? What laws has he been behind? What did he do with his power and what did he do to get elected to the senate in the first place? Can someone PLEASE tell me. Because I don't really see becoming a fad amongst college students an accomplishment. And I ask these not with malice I genuinely want to know that this man is someone who accomplished something and not just like the next Uggs or ipod that just gained massive popularity in a young demographic. Seeing as he's possibly going to be the next president now I'd really like to know.

Also to the person who said he didn't sling mud, I couldn't disagree more. His entire campaign (from what I saw) was mud slinging against the president and then by saying about your strategy I don't sling mud. I run a higher campaign. You're passive aggressively attacking the morality of all other candidate in a quite hypocritical way.

Unfortunately, I keep coming to the same conclusion as you. He seems to be little more than a figurehead for a well run campaign. There is little to no paper trail or record showing who he really is. I've rearched through his IL record in response to glowing generalizations from his supports here like JackFTwist only to find he was just lucky to be in the right place in the right time and made calculated decisions to get ahead . . . the definition of a true politician.
I read an apt analogy in the paper yesterday where the writer said making Obama President is comparable in business to making an intern into CEO!

Ding.....Ding.....Ding......Ding! Winner!

That's the exact reason why I started this thread. I am voting (happily too I might add) for Obama this November. But the reason I have supported Hillary from the start is because she's "been there, done that". This country has been seriously, and massively derailed these past 8 years. We need to undo, and roll back many of the Bush tragedies. I watched Pres. Bill Clinton come into office, with the same "he inspires people" stuff I've seen about Obama. I watched Bill Clinton bungle his first 18 months to 24 months in office due to being a newbie. The "Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy" and the failed healthcare plan was due almost entirely because the Clintons were newbies to the process. Because of that now we have run another 15 years without any healthcare reform, and still been having gay people kicked out of the military.

Now, when I, a staunch Democrat ask "what has he done" and feel there isn't a lot of "there", there, do you think Independents and uncommitted people will be more, or less critical and in need of logical, well reasoned, facts and proposals in order to pull that lever or show up on voting day to support Obama?
