who he really is[/B]. I've rearched through his IL record in response to glowing generalizations from his supports here like JackFTwist only to find he was just lucky to be in the right place in the right time and made calculated decisions to get ahead . . . the definition of a true politician. [/SIZE]
I read an apt analogy in the paper yesterday where the writer said making Obama President is comparable in business to making an intern into CEO!

Most of you make some great points. I've asked that question before of Obama supporters and they really don't have an answer...just the 'look what a great race he's run'. At a time of heightened security and economic downturn, you want to look hard at the candidates whom you're considering and there just isn't much there on Obama. Maybe it's fantastic that he's built of plastic because there is so little record to attack. He did vote "Present" alot in the IL legislature...an obvious sign that he had early ambitions and wanted to have a thin voting record resume.

The funny thing is that when you ask about his accomplishments and experience, his supporters get very angry and decide that bashing Hillary or McCain is the best way to answer the question. It's a struggle to answer the question head-on. I only answer that I can give when people ask me why I am still considering voting for Obama is merely, "it's a leap of faith...nothing more."

And sometimes that's the chance you take to get what you hope is an honest person in the White House, who is the least connected to Lobbyists, and has demonstrated far better character and integrity than his Democratic opponent. And that much can't be disputed.

This is the kind of crap that has upset Democrat supporters.

So that's something you'll just have to accept. When people say they want change, they really mean that they want change. They do not want your typical Washington insider politician running the country. It's the same basic premise that got Jesse Ventura elected. People are absolutely sick of politics as usual and are willing to take a chance to get this country out of this mess that Bush and Cheney created.

Now, as far as what the OP requested, he asked us to list 1 accomplishment Obama has in the Senate. His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn. I know it was a measure that was designed to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.

Here are several other of his accomplishments (not in my own words, as requested, but oh well):

-Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years.

-Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations.

-As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan.

-He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world.

-Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting.

- In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began.

-Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices.

-Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military.

-Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.

-Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.

-Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law.

-Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend.

-After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.

And since it is established that the OP is an obvious Hillary supporter ... allow me to go further with the bills that she herself introduced, that passed during her tenure ...

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

The funny thing is that when you ask about his accomplishments and experience, his supporters get very angry and decide that bashing Hillary or McCain is the best way to answer the question.

What value is there in answering the question devoid of any context?

If your only qualification for being president is having been mayor of some small city perhaps you are not qualified but if your opponent was the dog catcher in that city then maybe you are.

Compared to his opponents I think Obama holds up well. This is an election how can I judge him without comparing him to his opponents?

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

for the sake of argument, accomplishments don't make a good president. many politicians who support charities and do work in the community are later found to have illegitimate kids, connections to prostutition rings and backroom dealings and hidden agendas.

and as far as bush, who we elected twice, what exactly did he accomplish before presidency.

experience is a weak argument to make against a presidential nominee because experience doesn't guarantee a competent leader, it just means we've elected one who spend 10 years on this board and 3 years on that board. i can only make so many judgments about obama's character, but i'm often a good judge of character and have a strong intuition and, what he lacks in years, he offers me comfort in the sense that i feel (not because he's black, but because of judgment of character) that he's less likely to be found doing backroom deals or fathering kids outside his marriage. i could be completely wrong, but even the most educated voter can make the wrong choice because politics are a puppet show and most of us vote on gut instincts and emotions rather than TRUE understanding of who these people are we're giving power to. at best, electing a president is simply a guessing game. some of us make better educated guesses than others, some of us are better at recognizing character than others, but we're all just guessing. look at bush, we elected him twice under the GUESS that he was going to lead us in the midst of turmoil, and he had a helluva lot more experience than obama. years of experience mean NOTHING about character, it could very well indicate someone who's strategic in their hidden agenda.

Well first I'd like to make the distinction between experience and accomplishment because there is one. You can just sit there and do nothing but leading a committee that does something, making decisions that mean something, using powers to draft bills and pass them through means something. It means you can get things done which is far far more important than being a good person. History has shown that. As a human being I love Jimmy Carter to death.... he's probably the second worse president in recent memory. Being a good guy doesn't mean you know how to lead. It just doesn't or the world would be chalk full of good leaders. Many people have compared Obama to Kennedy... I see him much more like a Carter. Kennedy had plans and did things. Carter was riding an anti-Nixon wave into the office under the premise that he was different from Washington and he was good person. That sounds much more like the Obama campaign to me and that concerns me because I don't want four year confusion and back ass leading just to bounce back to the Republicans.

At the end of the day to me the most important thing is issues. If I don't agree with you I don't really care how competent you are I don't want you leading. Now Barrack by far has the more compatible system of beliefs for me so I'm voting for him and hoping that he's competent. But I'd love to know of his accomplishments to reassure me he is competent and not just hope that he is.

Not to sound sarcastic, but I would assume it is the ones that say "introduced". He obviously co-sponsored several bills, as you can see, however to be fair, the video did not seem to include the bills she merely "co-sponsored".

I'd just like to add that to the posters above who are including what Barack did as far as capturing the nomination while being Black and having the middle name "Hussein" ... that is not considered a "political accomplishment" with respect to his record in the Senate, therefore something like this really should not be taken into consideration for purposes of this discussion.

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Not to sound sarcastic, but I would assume it is the ones that say "introduced".

Not really . . . most legislation no matter how good ever makes it to the floor to be discussed and voted upon. Many times legislation is introduced with that in mind; it can become a ceremonial argument that "I introduced . . . " when there was never any expectation of success. Some in Congress do it to placate supporters or to use as bragging rights. I'm just curious to know if any of the accomplishments you listed fit into these categories.

Naked Gent, I know from your postings that you can do better than this. Most definitely, he or any candidate should be able to stand on their OWN merits and accomplishments without regards to any opponents...esp. for when runnng for POTUS. It is certainly fair and necessary to evaluate on these grounds. And, IMHO, if you insist on comparing him to McCain, Hillary, and Barr, they all out-experience him with Washington know how.

In regards to the constant Hillary-bashing, what really bothers me (and she is no where near perfect) is that I grew to loathe, starting in those early '90's, the constant Hillary (and Janet Reno) bashing, which back then was only from the Rush Limbaugh right. I thought it was grossly unfair. Hill and Janet took more hits from the right than Bill at least until MonicaGate. Today, Hillary stands resillent, which much impresses me, but to see Democrats acting like the Repubs in bashing Hillary to no end bothers me immensely.

And Midnight77, thanks for your post in actually outlining some Obama accomplishments:=D:.... for me, at least, those are things that I like to consider. You did good (well, except for the usual Hillary digs[-X)!!!

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

But to answer your question, here's my list:
  • Upstart Senator from Illinious who gives a dramatic address before the Democratic National Convention in 2004.
  • Tosses his name into the ring in mid 2007 against many more accomplished Democratic colleagues for the office of POTUS.
  • Wins the Iowa Caucus with a resounding "vision" and scares off any eventual competition for that position save one.
  • Goes on to inspire a wide range of demographics, that heretofore were only marginally interested in that weeks results of American Idol.
  • Democratic Party coffers began to fill because of his presence.
  • Voter registration drives reach a record high.
  • Some people's began to question the second coming of Jesus.
  • We learned through his association with impassioned reverends what it means to play the victim, instead of getting off one's ass and doing anything about it. Conspiracy theories not withstanding.
  • The "Kool-Aid" reference has resurfaced for further examination, and dicussion.
  • Race relations have resurfaced for further examination and discussion.
  • He marginally won a nomination against the first qualified Female candidate for POTUS.
  • The current GOP, and Republican opponent don't know how to deal with all of that without appearing "out of step" with the American Public.
I'd say that his accomplishments, at this point, pretty much amount to a coup. ..|

Thank you for your thoughts. :)

Thanks for the list.

The reason why I asked for it "in your own words" was with the intent that a poster wouldn't just go to some website, copy and paste whatever was there without checking any of it's veracity and would simply go to a website to get some "facts", none of which may be true, only to use it to reinforce an emotional, gut feel, rather than a true, reasoned out, logical set of facts that drove your decision to support Obama.

I don't vote on "gut feel". We've had a President the past 8 years who's run foreign policy based on "gut feel" and look where that has gotten us.

But I appreciate the list nonetheless. I saw two or three things on that list I'm going to dig into further.

I realize why you asked for it in my own words, and like I told you, that's the way it goes.

It is no secret that Obama does not have a nice long list of accomplishments in the Senate. That, however, does not necessarily mean that he will not be able to lead. For me as a voter, this election is about the issues, the integrity of the candidates, and who is more likely to look out for the Middle Class. The only 2 electable choices are McCain and Obama. I know where McCain stands, and to put it bluntly, I see that as another 4 years of the same. So, we have someone who admits he is not well-schooled in the economy, and is not willing to make any changes on Foreign Policy, whatsoever. That is not the kind of leadership we need in the White House.

And if you are complaining about the current Foreign Policy, which you obviously are, then it is illogical why you would consider voting for McCain, who has made clear that he has no intention of altering Bush's course of action in the Middle East, and is more likely to start a War with Iran, which will plunge this country into even further debt.

Therefore, there is only one other choice, who has a message that resonates with me, and has demonstrated more character and integrity than Hillary. And that is Obama. So, I'm sorry, but you can stomp your feet and nitpick and probe all you want about the legislation he introduced and passed, but that is not going to stop people from taking the leap of faith and voting for him. And that's just the way it goes, whether you like it or not.

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

This "integrity" you mention, was repeated ad hoc repeatedly during the Bush run for the White House 8 years ago. This "integrity" I'm afraid is nothing more than glossy packaging.

He may be filled with integrity, or maybe not. Jimmy Carter was probably the most honest, well meaning President this country has had in a very long time. His Presidency was a disaster.

Bush said he was full of integrity. Look at his Presidency. *sigh*

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Midnight, Hillary got nearly 18 million votes in the primaries and she's not electable? That's utter garbage and you know it. I still fail to understand how or why you cannot post positively about your candidate without spitting on Hillary at the same time.

You didn't answer my question. I said that you are obviously unhappy with Bush's Presidency and his Foreign policy. Therefore, I would like to hear you justify voting for McCain, who has made very clear he has no intentions of getting us of course in Iraq, and will likely escalate tensions with Iran. Furthermore, McCain admits he is not well-schooled on the Economy. If you are unhappy with Bush, I would like to hear your justification for voting for McCain.

Not a problem. It's not a nice long list, as we would all be more comfortable with, however it is what it is. We know what we are dealing with in the General Election and that is not a factor in our favor, and we know that. However, the thing we do have to our advantage are McCain's positions.

The only reason I bring up Clinton is because I keep hearing her disgruntled supporters still attacking Obama and I merely mention that her "accomplishments" and what she got passed in the Senate during her tenure aren't really all that impressive either.

With that being said, if she would have won the Primaries, she still would have had my (reluctant) vote.

Re: List Any Obama Accomplishment In Your Words On

Can we stop debating Hillary? Can we stop mentioning Hillary? Hillary lost. I wanted her to win. She didn't. Can everyone just go on? Why has a thread asking people to discuss Obama's accopmlishments feautred ONE post in which someone actually did that and then just a shit load of Hillary talk. I mean really. Hillary has no place in this thread. I can make a list of people I'm MORE qualified than but that will never make me qualified.

Secondly, you misconstrued what I wrote. When Hillary was in the race, she was electable and I never denied that. However, now that she has suspended her campaign, the only 2 electable choices are McCain and Obama. How do you expect Hillary to be elected if she herself suspended her campaign at this point?
