Little known facts

In 1274 BC, the Egyptian Empire and the Hittite Empire were at the height of their splendor. The two empires were ruled by two highly ambitious personalities: on one side, Ramesses II, who would go down in history as the greatest of all pharaohs; on the other, Muwatalli, a valiant warrior who knew no defeat. Both aimed to expand their empire, believing themselves to be the embodiment of their gods' will. The decisive battle took place at Kadesh, in Syria, and the stakes were domination of the ancient world. To this day, no one knows who won the battle. Ramesses announced a glorious victory, and so did Muwatalli. An Egyptian celebratory poem tells of Ramesses's victory, but Hittite sources report Muwatalli's victory. What is known for certain is that the borders between the two kingdoms remained unchanged and that the Peace of Kadesh was signed. The oldest written peace treaty in history was written in both cuneiform and hieroglyphics. Many copies were distributed throughout the ancient world: one of them is currently at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
