Little known facts

There's a new National Lacrosse League team this coming season, the Panther City Lacrosse Club.

Where on earth is Panther City?

Turns out it's America's 12th largest - and fast-growing - city - Fort Worth, Texas.

The nickname has been around since the 1870s. Fort Worth was hit hard by depression in 1873. In 1875, Robert E. Cowart wrote in the Dallas Herald that Fort Worth was so slow he saw a panther asleep in the street by the courthouse.

Fort Worth's fortunes rebounded in 1876. The locals took the insult and made it a point of pride. It's been Panther City ever since.

The Kepler space telescope finds exoplanets by measuring the reduced light of stars as planets orbiting that star pass in front if it. The sensors on Kepler are so sensitive that, if they are focused on Los Angeles at night, it can detect a single porch light being turned off.

Thus, this November 19, at Cape Nordkinn, the sun will rise for the last time this year at 10.24 and will set at 11.24 h, one hour of sunshine on the last annual sunny day of this point located in the north. of Norway. And yes, in fact, in just one day, they will have lost an hour of sunlight on the 20th, while in Barcelona we will have lost in the same time interval “only” a couple of minutes or in Tarifa (the southernmost point of the 'Continental Europe) only a minute and a half.

In January, reverse phenomenon. From the total absence of sunshine on January 21 to more than 40 minutes of sunshine on January 22 or the more than four hours of sunshine on January 31. In just 10 days, they will have gained four hours of sunlight. Of course, with a very low sun that will barely climb 2º above the horizon, but in the end, sun.

Sarah Josepha Hale (October 24, 1788 – April 30, 1879), a New Hampshire native, not only wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb," she also campaigned heavily for the establishment of Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Just think. Without her, we might never have Turkey Day! What a babe!

She merely "campaigned heavily" like a Greta, or "was instrumental in", like..?

Oh, let's give her a break. Maybe she was "heavily instrumental" in campaigning for the holiday. By the way, given her affection for lambs, how come we don't eat that kind of meat on Thanksgiving, instead of gobblers?

Happy Lamb Chop Day!

(Or maybe Happy Leg of Mutton Day, for large gatherings?)

Maybe precisely because of that?

The charge for water is actually the smallest part of many water bills.

As an example, I pay $80 for being hooked to the municipal sewer, $25 for being connected to the water system, and last month just $18 for actual water I used.

the saliva of a garter snake contains a very mild neurotoxin. ... Although the venom of a garter snake is only potent enough to cause some minor swelling or itching in a human, it can stun a toad or small rodent enough to make swallowing it much easier

We have three different wi-fi routers in the house. We started with one, but couldn't stream more than one movie at a time, so we put in a second one. Then I tried playing an online video game while there were two movies streaming at once, and the game lagged, so now we have three.

Did you know the saying “God willing and the Creek don’t rise” was in reference to the Creek Indians and not a body of water? We didn’t.

It turns out that the phrase was written by Benjamin Hawkins in the late 18th century. He was a politician and Indian agent. While in the south, Hawkins was requested by the President of the U.S. to return to Washington. In his response, he was said to write, “God willing and the Creek don’t rise.” Because he capitalized the word “Creek” it is deduced that he was referring to the Creek Indian tribe and not a body of water.

^ I wonder how many native Anglos knew the saying before that post.
