On a slow day, we process about 12,000 thoughts, but during especially contemplative days, that number can soar to 50,000 to 60,000, according to the National Science Foundation.

The volcano snail has metal armor!

The scaly-foot gastropod (Chrysomallon squamiferum) is a deep-sea snail from Indian Ocean hydrothermal vents, famous for its unique iron-plated scales that form a "chain mail" armor, making it the only known animal to incorporate iron sulfides into its skeleton. Nicknamed the "volcano snail," it lives in extreme conditions, feeding on symbiotic microbes, and is the first species listed as endangered due to deep-sea mining threats.
Iron armor:
Its foot is covered in hundreds of scales (sclerites) made of iron sulfide, giving it a metallic, armored appearance.

Habitat:
Found exclusively at deep-sea hydrothermal vents, thousands of meters below the surface at temperatures around 750 degrees Fahrenheit

Diet:
It hosts symbiotic bacteria in its gut that produce food, allowing it to thrive in the vent environment

Unique biology:
It has the largest heart relative to its body size in the animal kingdom and is the only known animal to use iron sulfide in its skeleton

In January 1943, during the height of World War II, Florence took extraordinary measures to safeguard its invaluable artistic heritage from aerial bombings. Michelangelo’s David, a symbol of the city, was enclosed in a protective brick structure to shield it from potential war damage. Here, workers begin to lay the first bricks.

According to the Associated Press, the caterpillar is part of a group of native Hawaiian species that use silk glands to spin protective coverings. While others incorporate sand or lichen, this species is the first known to use insect remains as camouflage. The strange behavior has earned it a reputation as one of the most unusual caterpillars on Earth.

Only 62 individuals have been observed in more than 20 years of field research, highlighting how rare the species is. The findings were published in the journal Science on Thursday.

/\ Can we be sure that it does this for camouflage?

Maybe it's the caterpillar's version of a leather aviator's jacket, or a string of pearls.
