Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

I have to say, that opening ceremony was absolutely stunning.

A testament to the history of Great Britain. Danny Boyle did a fantastic job in directing the entire thing, hats off to him.

We showed the world the best that came from britain. I especially liked the tribute to the workers of the national health service who seem to get no support from the government or media in this country and deserve so much more. Just fabulous.

The olympic torch was a wondrous idea as well. Honestly, I was speechless through some of it.

Shame about Paul McCartney's voice, seemed to be a little under the weather.

And how fantastic was it to see Muhammad Ali. It was such a shame to see in how poor health he is but, great that he was part of the opening ceremony. A homage to a true great of world sport.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

The thing that impressed me most was that it was like watching a movie which, apparently, was the intention of the entire show. Segments blended so well, and everything was timed to the second. If anything had glitched, it would have screwed up the thing. It also impressed me that they did that little sketch with the Queen and Bond. It not only made a great segue to the Queen's entrance, but it allowed the crew to clear out the stadium in preparation for the next segment.

The 7 youths who carried the torch in the stadium was spot on. No big names. No celebrities. Just ordinary young people who represent what the Olympics are all about.

Well done.

Haha it really was brilliant wasn't it. So proud.

And, I have only just realised that some of you may not yet have seen the opening ceremony, so please accept my apologies if I have ruined any of it for you, it was a complete accident. But I promise, you're going to love it.

I think that was the intention, yeah.

Danny Boyle (Director of Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire & others) directed the whole thing and in my opinion, he did it to a tee.

Not really the best openings ever (I still remember the formality and spectacle of Atlanta '96) but I liked the humorous touches (Mr. Bean is a British gem).

Yeah poor girl...

I think the best word to describe the opening ceremony would be "cheeky".

There were 70,000 of those LED panels, one next to each seat, and together they formed a giant LED screen which was used to display graphics and even animated images at many times throughout the ceremony.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

I've said it before, I'm just happy London won over NY. Getting to work would've been an epic nightmare.

If NY had won, they should have pulled a trick from Singapore: built an island off shore. "Olympic Island", home for the Olympics, afterwards a great sports venue. It could have its own subway stations, marinas, small airports, and a highway just for it.

Not the best opening I've seen but still pretty darn good overall.

Re: Todays the Day! 2012 London Summer Olympics!

I loved the James Bond/Queen. Mr Bean and music of the 60,70,80,90,00's bits. One of the best Olympic shows in years...

YES!!

Does NBC have some sort of monopoly on the Olympics in the U.S.? If so, How? Why? That's just dumb.

They own the broadcast rights, after an auction for them.

I think it stinks -- their coverage has always sucked. I favor a scheme put forth a couple of Olympics ago: break it into sections -- auction track and field as one section, aquatics as another, field sports as another, and the rest as a catch-all. At least one or two sport categories would get covered well.

Royal hangnail notwithstanding, that was pretty fun. Yay.
