Luka Rocco Magnotta, in a Berlin jail after he was captured during an international manhunt, won't fight extradition to Canada to face charges including first-degree murder, Berlin police said today.

He won't appear in court, either. Court will go to him. (I've never heard of this before.)

A German judge was expected to visit Magnotta in a Berlin jail Tuesday to speak to the Canadian about his detention and the procedure for extradition to face first-degree murder and other charges.

Chief Supt. Stefan Redlich of the Berlin police told CBC News that Magnotta will be visited at a time set by the judge rather than leave the jail to appear in court.

The judge will decide whether Magnotta will continue to be held in Berlin or be transferred to another facility, where he could be held for months, depending on the extradition process, reported the CBC's Laura Lynch from Berlin.

Oh, I know... TV shows will have episodes loosely based on this for sure - they do that all the time... I just wonder how long until a movie comes out. It's such a twisted story that it already feels like a movie... LA is in contact with Montreal police regarding an unsolved murder/dismemberment case from early in the year:

Los Angeles detectives have reached out to Montreal police about a possible connection between Luka Magnotta and the death of Hervey Medellin, whose body parts were found scattered near the infamous Hollywood sign earlier this year.

On Thursday, Montreal police confirmed that they were in contact with their counterparts in L.A.

I have to write about this guy. I don't want to, but I feel compelled to - if only to try and exorcise some of the thoughts flying around my head these past few days.

The first one is horror. Horror that anyone could be that depraved that they could inflict such cruelty on to another human being. Don't even get me started on the cruelty to animals he displayed over the previous few years via internet videos, something that people have only recently connected directly to him as being the perpotrator involved.

The second is anger. Anger that I am sitting here writing about him, playing in to (what I genuinely feel) is his ultimate wish: to become an infamous icon - the ultimate example of the atomizing, de-personalising nature of online life. He is a narcissistic and deviant avatar, just one of many virtual identities he invented in order to finally become the celebrity he always wanted to be.

What else do you say about a demented, psychotic killer who had 70 Facebook accounts and who has recently been arrested for murder after fleeing to Berlin? This is a man who had switched off from the world, and coldly filmed the methodical yet maniacal dismemberment and cannibalistic attack on student Lin Jun, who was alledgedly his boyfriend at the time. Stranger still, the Facebook page where it was originally uploaded to before he fled the country somehow attracted over 600 "likes".

Magnotta appeared to have searched for the most popular genres online – gore videos, low-rent porn, Facebook narcissism – broken them down in to their component parts or essence, and thrust himself back out into their midst in the most hyperbolically attention-seeking way that no one could ignore, but no sane person ever truly comprehend.

Don't believe me? There is a trail of breadcrumbs once you start looking for them: seemingly even the most quintessential and popular of Internet memes, the "LOL-cat" appears to have been hijacked by him. His initial source of media infamy, the videos in which he killed kittens using a python, and a vacuum cleaner and plastic bags, weren’t just fodder for police and animal-welfare investigations, but surely were specifically modelled after the Internet-kitten craze. Take the single-most popular online meme, and warp it to the nth degree

The irony here however is that he's not the unique individual he thought he was, but merely a grotesque, pitiful pastiche of imagary from Hollywood, pornography and the Internet. Among his many other avatars and Internet identities was "Catherine Tramwell", the name of Sharon Stone’s psycho-killer character in Basic Instinct – a movie whose poses he (allegedly - I haven't seen it, nor do I desire to. I learnt my lesson about opening Pandora's Box many years ago - never again. Some things are best left unseen) mimicked in the video, right down to the use of an ice pick. New Order's "True Faith" drones in the background too - a track that also featured in the movie adaptation of American Psycho. There is also evidence that the surname for his most recent nom de plume (Magnotta) was the name of a serial killer in a PC game called Ripper. The list just goes on. It's almost as if he was aware that via these signifiers that he knew he could easily arouse the curiosity of a class of heavy Internet users - those quick to see everything and share everything.

All this leads me to my point for creating this missive - his agenda, and our reaction to it.

Those of us who are aware of this vile example of a human being are sadly all playing in to his hands in one way or another. He knows it too. Hell, i'm doing it right now just by writing about the sick bastard. Even though it's via the (relative) "safety" of my locked-down Facebook profile, it still pisses me off, but I had to get my thoughts out of my head and down in some form or other.

I think the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back was last night. After reading a number of news articles on him, I ended up on youtube, watching various small news reports etc. As is the norm with youtube, suddenly you find yourself in the online equivalent of a seedy back alley wondering just how you got there and just what the hell it is you're watching.

Before you ask - no, I did not watch "that video" (I reitterate once again that I have no desire to do so, the descriptions I have read are more than distressing enough), but I did end up watching a couple of what are now commonly referred to as "reaction videos". We all know of them, we all have seen at least one - they are however, the viral equivalent of Big Brother - you've seen one series, you've seen them all.

I got angry though. No, I mean REALLY angry, and I felt dispair. Dispair that this is what we have come to as a human race. There is seemingly no evolution left to be savoured, just a slow devolution in to a mire of morally corrupt acts. A slurry of depravity.

To truly understand my point, you need to watch the same reaction videos. There is no footage to be seen, or audio to be heard other than New Order's True Faith and the vocals of the uploaders "reactions" to what they are watching. I would be pissed if you were not offended to be honest - because that shows me that as a friend you have a heart, a sense of genuine compassion for your fellow human beings, and you get what i'm trying to convey here. I would be concerned if the reaction was anything other than that I think. But trust my word, there is nothing graphic for you to see in the following links at all, I promise you that much.

I guess you are wondering why I even bothered to watch these douchebags in the first place. A fair question, and i'll try my best to answer it. I was inquisitive I guess. I wondered what the fascination is with making these videos. To me, it's one thing to make a reaction video to something like the infamous "2 Girls, 1 Cup", you know you don't have to even see the original video to find other peoples reactions amusing - but what in holy hell is amusing, let alone sane, in videoing yourself reacting to another human life being tied up and having that life snuffed out by being butched on camera? (and trust me, it gets worse - so much worse).

Is this what the Internet has now become? Death as entertainment? I mean, look at those bozos above. I could almost excuse the first guy as he looks pretty dim to be frank, but the other two? How anyone with any decent moral fibre can sit and watch something like that, casually knocking back a beer as if they're watching an episode of 'Friends' whilst someone is being brutally butchered is utterly reprehensible in my book.

I just don't understand. Can someone help me out here?

To wrap this up, this was uploaded today on youtube - a twenty minute video of Magnotta auditioning for some Canadian reality show centered around people having cosmetic surgery. He seems normal enough at first - but watch how he almost takes great pleasure in discussing what the proceedure entails in the most graphic detail. It's so clinical that it's chilling to be honest:

I have no words that could ever truly convey my distaste, my anger at how a victims life is now reduced to a punchline for an online video within the space of mere days. Is this how low we have sunk as a race? Seemingly so.
