It's an interesting aspect of idolatry toward government that people think it should be all-knowing, and hand them knowledge of every little detail. We have learned much in the investigation already. Searching for more clues will suffer diminishing returns. The most important life saving measures that must be taken we already know. It's clear that certain degrees of freedoms need to be taken away from pilots, e.g. smart computers could thwart deranged pilots from flying to Antarctica, shutting off communications, etc.

Not putting a price on closure, I suppose it is philosophical. It isn't my call to make. I am not saying the mystery is not captivating, but I don't see why any further searches are rationally justified other than the ping detected by the Chinese vessel.

When I want to chafe at the outrageous expense and risks incurred for the knowledge of how 239 lives were lost, I remind myself of the staggering wastes made every day by every government involved in the search for far more banal purposes.

I imagine the amount of wasted paper, not printed and stored, merely discarded, by the U.S. government, dwarfs the search costs.

One thing is for certain. The battery on the data recorders is dying. The ships have days to find it, or at least confirm the signal, or it may be lost forever.
