I just saw Dreamgirls and couldn't stop drooling over Beyonce. She's hot as hell.

But Mariah is definitely more talented.

Intonation is one of her strengths. I think singing with Destiny's Child helped her hear the harmonies.

Thank you. You understand what I'm saying about Beyonce singing live. I've seen Mariah have awful performances (BET for example) where it would make one say, what happened? I would choose Christina too, but she is not apart of this thread.

Beyonce is a dancer. Mariah clearly is not. I think Beyonce has that on her.

Id take Mariah any day. Mariah was not molded from childhood to be a star.. She was and is raw natural talent that deserves to be on top on that basis alone...

Maybe not from childhood, but she was at the very beginning of her career. Tommy had complete control over her, how she sang, what she sang, etc.

The thing is, I don't think Thomas D. Mottola could've contractually obligated her to follow a certain image (the way to act, sing, etc.) because that would be like slavery and these aren't the slave days and of course slavery is wrong...I think basically you'd have to finish a number of albums that's on the contract. Looking at her image from her debut album to "Daydream" it looks like she went along with the phony image, right? At least the likes of Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis and Celine Dion are "real".

I just saw Mariah perform on MTV'S "The Hills" premiere party. She sounded a bit horse and was surprisingly not "On Point".I can't believe it but it sounds like she's loosing her voice.

Beyonce who? Mariah is a Long Island girl so definitely her!

Musically there's no contest as Mariah has the history. Beyonce also can't act her way out of a wet paper bag. I mean Glitter was a hot mess, but it was a fascinating hot mess and so sparkly and camp in an embarrassing way. Plus I actually enjoyed Wise Girls! Yay Mira Sorvino.

Seriously, Mariah is obviously the better singer but I love them both. Beyonce's B'Day is more polished and well produced than any Mariah album and "Crazy in Love" is pretty much superior to any Mariah song. But...Mariah has one of the greatest voices in American pop culture. So it's a tie for me. Cover them in mud naked and let me wrestle with them...

This whole discussion is kind of pointless. Music isn't what it use to be. Singers aren't artists... they're just singers. People are rarely responsible for their songs. They get writer credit but they do very little other than sing

I give points to Mariah because I get the feeling she actually plays more in the creative process than most.

Well...to be fair, I think Falconfan's point about today's mass produced music CELEBRITIES as opposed to earlier generations' music ARTISTS is a good one, and quite indicative of the turbo-capitalist society in which we live. And anyway he still gave Mariah credit -- are her fans still getting so much whiplash from the bad reviews for Glitter and Charm Bracelet that they can't even recognize a COMPLIMENT anymore?

Yes, but to bring it up for these two particular singers--it's irrelevant. There are plenty of singers from past eras who are now considered LEGENDS who didn't write their own material but were masterful musicians.

Now if we're talking about Rihanna and Britney, that's a whole different story.

Btw, I'm not really a fan of either Beyonce or Mariah.

I can play Mozart. I learned it long ago. I can play Beethoven pretty much spot on. However by no means would I consider myself Beethoven or Mozart. I'm not saying that their voices aren't instruments but I'm saying that doesn't impress me nearly as much the artistry that goes into creating a song. I'm just not as impressed. Some people learn it. Some people are born with singing abilities but to me art is the expression of ones self and to compare the paint by number "Starry Night" to the real thing or my rendition of Moonlight Sonata to Beethoven just isn't a real comparison. It's a joke. It's just one of those things where the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts and quite Frankly neither Mariah nor beyonce will be the new Lennon or McCartney any time soon

As far as me saying it's pointless it's because these diva's are mass produced. No one is intrinsically better than the other.

FalconFan, I agree of course, But why is it such a sin to like BOTH singers and admit that one of them has a better group of singles (in terms of production) while the other has one of the best voices in music? They BOTH have negatives and positives. Beyonce's "pro" is that her songs are well produced (for the most part) whereas a lot of Mariah's songs are standard and are made better by her stunning voice. Beyonce's best songs can be sung by anyone and still sound good but that's also her "con"... THEY CAN BE SUNG BY ANYONE. So Beyonce as a singer is pretty useless (enter: Mariah's greatest "pro" -- her vocal range).

You are definitely correct here. Beyonce has the better production on her albums; so many songs could have been singles from B'Day, although I'm not sure they would have been number 1s, but she would have gotten airplay. However, as a singer, Beyonce is overrated; she is pretty average.

Many people think that her voice is so powerful, when it really is not. If anyone needs proof, watch her "Cater 2 U" performance on MTV. She was great in Destiny's Child; realistically, she is not lead singer material, based off her voice. However, she would kill Mariah in a dance contest.

Mariah has better natural gifts for singing. Like you said, her songs are made amazing because of her amazing voice; everyone cannot do her songs.

I haven't signed back on in a little while. Anyway, sure, Tommy could've been controlling, but he couldn't have exerted full control over her because these aren't the slave days, she still had a choice and could've said something like, "Look, I'll fulfill the number of albums that's on my contract, but I'll be me".
