Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

Um, if you don't write your own music or play an instrument, aren't you just a singer and not a MUSICIAN? (Legend or not?) Just saying...

Besides, FalconFan is my boy, so I had to defend him, lol.

My whole point is that a singer is no less a musician than a pianist or a saxophone player, because their voice IS their instrument.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

I can play Mozart. I learned it long ago. I can play Beethoven pretty much spot on. However by no means would I consider myself Beethoven or Mozart.

And I'm sure Beyonce and Mariah don't consider themselves Tina Turner or Patti LaBelle. Doesn't change the fact that a voice is an instrument.

Some people are born with singing abilities but to me art is the expression of ones self

You don't think people with raw talent still have to learn how to use it? A voice is a tool, and one must use it properly just as they would a violin or a trumpet.

And you don't think someone can express themselves through singing?

and to compare the paint by number "Starry Night" to the real thing or my rendition of Moonlight Sonata to Beethoven just isn't a real comparison.

What does that even have to do with anything?

quite Frankly neither Mariah nor beyonce will be the new Lennon or McCartney any time soon ;)

O...kay? And neither will anyone else. Your point?

As far as me saying it's pointless it's because these diva's are mass produced. No one is intrinsically better than the other.

Right. So why did you bother replying to a thread titled Beyonce vs. Mariah? Does it make you feel better than everyone else?

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

Beyonce... hands down. Excellent singer and entertainer.

Wow, that was amazing! Thanks for sharing :)

I have respect for Mariah Carey as a musician because even though her body of work can be criticised of this or that, she has either written, co-written or produced every song she has released and that is something which cannot be said for a lot of others in the industry.

This is one of my favourite performances, partly because her lower register is amazing and partly because I love Stevie Wonder (I just can't get over how bored the audience looks though!).

You're initial response said "Btw, I'm not really a fan of either Beyonce or Mariah" So.... I guess I replied for the same reason you did....

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

I can't get over the "Touch My Body" video, the song should,t even be that good but its like crack sprinkled entemanns cake after seeing the video, I cant get it out of my head sometimes. I love Mariah because she has more of a flirty attitude, but Beyonce's "Me, Myself, and I" was like my anthem Freshmen year of college. Tough fuckin question. Mariah for me though.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

I haven't signed back on in a little while. Anyway, sure, Tommy could've been controlling, but he couldn't have exerted full control over her because these aren't the slave days, she still had a choice and could've said something like, "Look, I'll fulfill the number of albums that's on my contract, but I'll be me".

No offense, but you obviously have no idea how recording, or any entertainment, contracts can work. Your ideas are more ideal than real. I know a few people who could have had record deals, but the record companies would not give them artistic control, so they never signed. People who fight really hard with record companies have to be extremely, extremely talented and/or established.

And I'm sure Beyonce and Mariah don't consider themselves Tina Turner or Patti LaBelle. Doesn't change the fact that a voice is an instrument.

You make a great point about the human voice being considered an instrument. However, Mariah has a more complex instrument than Patti and definitely Tina.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

In terms of what? Old school Mariah or Mariah now? Beyonce is a far better entertainer and performer than Mariah. Mariah has a much better song catalog, but both are great writers. Bother are great singers. Mariah now can't compare with Beyonce. If we're comparing old school Mariah then she's definitely the better singer, but this new Mariah is a portion of what she used to be. If we're going with the here and now I'll have to give it to Beyonce. If we're talkin' OVERALL Mariah takes it vocally, but Beyonce is still the better performer.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

If by complex you mean loud and able to hit notes that make dogs go apeshit, then yes.

Yeah, that's exactly what I mean. Liking a person's voice is subjective; I am not and never will state that you have to like Mariah's voice, but Tina Turner is much like Beyonce in that she is known for her hits, not her voice. Tina Turner's voice is average, although it had a nice, gritty quality.

Patti Labelle and Christina Aguilera are the only other singers mentioned in this thread who are not mediocre singers. That's just stating the facts; I like Beyonce and Tina, but they are still on the average side of singers. From a musician standpoint, the more range and power a person has, the more the person has to know how to work his or her instrument.

As far as Mariah today, as I said earlier, she has gotten better with expressing herself. On the other hand, the quality of her voice has changed. She isn't exactly a teenager anymore, so I would expect her voice to change.

Let’s backtrack, Mariah was done with her recording contract in 1999, but she strayed from the formula two years earlier in 1997 when “Butterfly” came out. If image is imposed on a recording contract then in 1997 when she changed that image her record company would’ve sued her ass big time for breach of contract, but that didn’t happen because image really isn’t imposed on a recording contract. No offense, but I’m done. I’m not gonna debate about this anymore.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

Yeah, I love Beyonce. Her concerts are borderline amazing. She never bores. I just like her persona, very upbeat. Mariah sometimes comes off as a b*tch. But she is good too.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

Don't get me wrong guys, I LOVE Mariah!! Vision of Love is indeed lovely but it's a standard ballad that's made remarkable by her AMAZING vocals. Beyonce's songs feature more memorable hooks and slicker productions (they're also less lazy) but if Beyonce would kill for anything, it would be Mariah's voice. Beyonce's songs are better on their own but they can be sung by anyone, Beyonce herself doesn't make them special. Mariah's songs have been made timeless by Mariah's voice and THAT cannot be duplicated. And anyway I love Fantasy, Always Be My Baby and Breakdown (and ok, I have a fondness for Someday).

So reeeelax.

I agree with Nik2 - mariah has one of the best voices around now (maybe the best) but beyonce has the better songs - and im one of the biggest and bitchiest mariah fans on here so dont jump on me. mariah's never had a crazy in love, whereas beyonce's had a few we belong togethers in her destiny's child days...

Also those of you saying mariah's lost it, she has nodules on her larynx which means that her voice is deteriorating and wont be up to much in about ten years, and i think in all her performances right now she's just trying to save her voice by "mumbling through" but don't worry cos as soon as she does a tour for the new album she's gonna kick ASS all over again.

Equally, Beyonce's voice is on the more average side of things but it still amazing and it shines every so often - anyone who has her Live Experience dvd i think it's at the end of her naughty girl performance where she mimics all the different instruments? that was incredible.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

I can play Mozart. I learned it long ago. I can play Beethoven pretty much spot on. However by no means would I consider myself Beethoven or Mozart. I'm not saying that their voices aren't instruments but I'm saying that doesn't impress me nearly as much the artistry that goes into creating a song. I'm just not as impressed. Some people learn it. Some people are born with singing abilities but to me art is the expression of ones self and to compare the paint by number "Starry Night" to the real thing or my rendition of Moonlight Sonata to Beethoven just isn't a real comparison. It's a joke. It's just one of those things where the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts and quite Frankly neither Mariah nor beyonce will be the new Lennon or McCartney any time soon ;)

As far as me saying it's pointless it's because these diva's are mass produced. No one is intrinsically better than the other.

Sure I can play Beethoven, I can play Mozart, I'm grade 8 piano, I'm grade 6 singing, im training to be a professional dancer. but these are all learned things, right? im sure you had lessons just as I did. I still think mariah has more raw singing talent in her little finger than I do anywhere in my body because she was "born with singing abilities". that's a gift, i could work and learn for another 12 years, i still would be nowhere near as good, and although i can't really say, i doubt you would either. that doesn't impress you?
Also I meant to say - EVERYONE if you haven't already, watch her grammy performance of we belong together/fly like a bird - that's mariah at her best in my opinion

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

Mariah, hands down. Beyonce is too full of herself, and yet people think her voice is so extraordinary. Um, no. She just yells a lot.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

is this a joke? mariah "hands down." (haha) beyonce is good, but she's nowhere near mariah. great performer though...she deserves a lot of credit, especially for irreplaceable, the best song of 2006 (at least the end of) and 2007.

I've never, ever seen one sign of Beyonce being full of herself; from what I have heard and seen, she is very down to earth. If anything, there are times when she performs where it seems that she may be slightly insecure with her abilities as she may try to upstage others (Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion).

I do come across a lot of people trying to compare her to more extraordinary singers like Mariah, Whitney, Christina, etc. So, I do understand what you're saying in that respect.

Re: Beyonce Or Mariah?

mariah carey has a much bigger voice and far more range, beyonce's voice is MUCH thinner although she does have impeccable technique, her phrasing, diction and riffing abilities are far beyond the average pop star (don't respond to that if you haven't seen her in concert because this girl can tear the rafters down with some runs). beyonce's range is pretty average though but she's a better performer than mariah who usually either stands in one spot or moves around awkwardly to awkward choreography. i'd still pay big bucks to see either one, they're definitely better entertainers than anybody bashing them in this thread

So true. That's what I've been trying to say throughout this whole thread. I love the both of them, and I would pay to see them in live.

Some people cannot stand Mariah's voice because they think she just yells. Some people just don't like the sound of her voice. I just don't like the sound of Beyonce's voice. And I would SO NOT put Christina Aguilera in with Mariah, Whitney, Celine, etc. Not even close. Her voice is nothing extraordinary. I just don't think yelling at the top of your lungs=a good voice. Yes, Mariah does it, but she also has a soothing tone to her voice, whereas Christina...doesn't. I dunno, I don't wanna start a vocal war because theres fans of them all, so this is all just my opinion - don't wanna start a whos better than who discussion lol.

rotf @ Mariah's screaming somehow being "smooth".
