Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

Interestingly, the record belongs to Boys II Men too, not only Mariah Carey. But of course who cares about has-beens?

Actually, I do.

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

Actually it was co written by both of them mariah had written a harmony and verse for a record and boyz 11 men had written a chorus and they actually got together to write a song to release together and realised they had written a song already which had a similar meaning and decided to work together to produce it as one song this was all said in an interview with them both WAAAAAYYY! back when she released 'live from madison sq garden'

quote-

One Sweet Day" was partly inspired by the death of Def Leppard guitarist Steve Clark, who died in 1991. Carey had always seen him as an idol and loved the way he went around everything as she thought he was her "Guitar Legend", so she began writing a song. During this period, she had arranged to record a song with Boyz II Men. When they were throwing ideas together, Carey learned that Boyz II Men had written a song about their road manager, Khalil Roundtree, who was murdered while they were on tour. The two songs were merged together to become "One Sweet Day".

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

I can't decide if One Sweet Day is a love song, or a spiritual song. ashtanga81, please help.

The lyrics tells me something of a connection with 'God', while the way they sang it was like they were singing it for / to one another.

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

To starlight70, I really don't think of Boyz II Men as “has beens”. I’ve always known “One Sweet Day” to be a Boyz II Men single too, but I mainly mentioned the big diva’s name to emphasize her competition with female pop music superstar Beyonce...and speaking of Beyonce and Mariah, Beyonce does have as much faith in God as the major diva says she does.

Thanks to ashtanga81 because before today I didn't know the background information as to why Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey wrote the song “One Sweet Day”. It's really sad and unfortunate that the friend of Boyz II Men got killed and it’s really genuinely sweet that Boyz II Men wrote their part of the song in memory of that person.

Reportedly, back in '95 or '96, Mariah Carey said that she saw Steve Clark as her "idol" and I think it's a sweet thing to do that Mariah wrote her part of the song for him and that she didn't just dedicate it to him, thinking that it's a clever idea to do it just so that there'll be another major hit song for her career which would be a manipulative and selfish thing to do, but it’s great to know that she isn’t like that because everybody knows that Mariah Carey is a true-to-herself, "delicate flower" or in other words genuinely sweet, down-to-earth sort of person.:D

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

For the record - I've seen Mariah in concert 3 times (2000,2003,2006), and let me tell you, she can still sing very well.

I'm happy for Beonce's chart success, but "Irreplacable" really isn't in the legue as "One Sweet Day" (even though I'm not a huge fan of it). "One Sweet Day" was imensely popular b/c two of the biggest acts of the 90's so it's not surprising that it was so big.

"Irreplaceable" is a fantastic but I'm surprised it went to #1 longer than "Crazy in Love" (8 weeks).

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

Hehehe... To talk about Beyonce's songs, my top fav is neither Crazy In Love nor Irreplacable. I prefer Baby Boy.

and that song went to #1 for 9 weeks :)

Wow, she has and 8-weeker, a 9-weeker, and a 10-weeker, lol.

And Destiny's Child's Independent Women Part 1 was at the top for 11 weeks. If only they are still together. I love them more, than a solo girl.

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

and the song's called "One Sweet Day" .

poor fat bitch mariah.. that song is so stupid and borring.. to bad for her she has all this #1 hits, but zero 0 songs that are good and classics

She's not fat anymore. I admit that none of her songs have stood the test of time, but she has a big fan base who loves her music. Obviously if you don't like Mariah Carey, her songs are not gonna be good to you, but for the people that do like her, they are good, and they are memorable ;)

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

I just checked billboard.com yesterday and "Irreplaceable" dropped from #2 to #9. I had the feeling that “Irreplaceable” wasn’t gonna go back to #1, especially since Beyonce didn’t sing it on The Grammy Awards. If she sang “Irreplaceable” on that major awards show, I think maybe that song would’ve gone back to #1. Oh well, whatever. I saw some news that a new album of hers is gonna be released later this year. Maybe one of the singles from that forthcoming album will go to #1 for at least 17 weeks.

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

Starlight70, I wasn’t surprised that Nelly Furtado took over the #1 spot because I think “Say It Right” had a boost from more airplay and it’s great that she now has another #1. I’m becoming a Nelly Furtado fan too and in fact I’m gonna buy her album, but I hope Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” will take the #1 spot again and stay there for another seven weeks to beat Mariah Carey’s record.

That's somewhat sad to find out that Nelly's single "Say It Right" went to number one. It does have a nice beat (which is why it's number 1) but if you listen to the lyrics, they make no sense, whatsoever. I liked the song for a little while but now I can't wait until it has died down...

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

Everytime I hear an old Mariah song, it takes me back... *sigh*

Why doesn't she make good music anymore? WHY, WHY, WHY?

Re: Beyonce being the underdog, she might be able to beat Mariah Carey's record!!!

Classic Mariah!

"Without You"

"Fantasy"

"Dreamlover"

"Emotions"

"Loverboy"

Mariah vs. Beyonce

Mariah has 17#1 singles so far. Beyonce has 11#1 singles so far. Just out of curiosity do you think Beyonce will ever meet or surpass Mariah on #1's?? Beyonce is sure tryin!

Re: Mariah vs. Beyonce

Oh dear i can see this thread turning into another who is best artist and who has the best voice etc,

However i dont think its really fair to compare the 11 number 1,s Beyonce has had as she has only had a few of them as a solo artist and should only really be compared in that way i feel for example although i think Beyonce is a great artist i have never bought any of her stuff as a sola artist but i have bought a few destinys child songs beacause i liked the styles and harmonies of the group so to me it 2 different artist, im sure not everybody will agree with me but i kinda think thats fair.

But back to the original question i dont think she will surpass Mariahs current amount of number 1's i just have a feeling about it although it does seem alot easier to make number 1 now a days than it did 10 years ago..does anybody else feel that?

Re: Mariah vs. Beyonce

who is mariah? She's not famous here in Europe. is she that fat lady who screams when she sings?

and beyonce? hm she is anoying too.

Re: Mariah vs. Beyonce

Yeah I dont see why would you compare them both, but both are great. I like em both :)

And to answer your question... hmm who knows. Time will tell.

Re: Mariah vs. Beyonce

Singing and music wise? Mariah--even though her voice isn't much these days. Performing wise? Beyonce. Mariah has pretty much zero stage presence.

Re: Mariah vs. Beyonce

I like Beyonce over Mariah. Mariah is a stuck up bitch, but then again Beyonce is a fake robot who has no personality and lets her parents and Jay decide who she is.

I like Beyonce's music better, and if she continues on the path she is on then she will easily overcome Mariah's record.

If you ask me, Mariah is getting close to her end
