After the loss of Proposition 8, many members of the gay community have been acting like middle school bitches. There I said it.

Acts of violence. Harassment. Cursing. Destruction of public and private property. Road Rage. Hell even egg-throwing.

What would Martin Luther King Jr. say? He'd condemn our actions and shake his head in shame.

Do you how many anti-segregation propositions have been sent to court? Hundreds. Over the course of decades. Finally, under the pacifist teachings of Mr. King via peaceful protests segregation was annulled.

After Proposition 8 was passed, the gay community reacted like I knew a buncha of spoiled, Gucci-loving queens would: by throwing a tantrum.

Now the Mormons are enemies. Hell, by all rights apparently Latinos and Blacks are the enemy of the gay community.

How are we supposed to be taken seriously if we act like children. Men are all created equal. But men are not equal to children.

Martin Luther King's example has clearly been forgotten. And I'm ashamed of the gay community and their actions....

:(

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Many gay people acted like middle school bitches even before Prop 8. So did many straight people.

As for acts of violence, harassment, cursing, destruction of property and egg-throwing, I wonder how many of us have been victims of this ourselves as recipients of violence and homobobia?

Gay people are angry right now, and rightfully so. We have a reason to be pissed and we have every right to express our disgust with our rights being taken away.

As with every group of people, there's always a bad apple or two, but that shouldn't be reflective of the group as a whole. I have to say though, I understand this kind of behavior more when it's coming from a group that's acting in defense because someone else threw the first punch. The homosexuals of California were blatantly slapped in the face and it's rather understandable that their reactions are going to be less than friendly. In a perfect world, it wouldn't be that way. But this isn't a perfect world. We got fucked.

The gay community has every right to be angry. But they should react like rational adults. Not like a buncha two-year olds.

The gay community should NOT commit acts of violence, destruction, or harassment. If they wanna complain about 'first punches'....

African-Americans got HOSED and BITTEN by the police.

Yet they didn't react with violence or harassment.

If the gay community wants to follow the failed path of the Black Panthers....

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

I agree that the violence is unacceptable but I can understand also where that anger is coming from. I'm not sure if all this protesting will get us anywhere but sometimes you have to let that steam out before it explodes. That being said, I also understood why many African and Latino Americans felt when those four police officers were acquitted. The violence and the looting were completely unacceptable but than again so should racial profiling.

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

I don't think he'd be ashamed of anyone, just disappointed in some blacks and gays. He'd be more proud than disappointed in our country though from the progress we've made.

Remember, he fought for gay people too and wanted equality for everyone, not just blacks. It's true that the high number of blacks who voted for prop 8 to pass are hypocrites for demanding equal rights but not willing to give it themselves. At the same time, you can't just go around blaming an entire race for something 70% of them did. 30% are having terrible things said about them when all they did was support us. At least half of people from the other races voted for it to pass too.

You're doing the same thing though blaming every one of us when only a small number of people here are making those racist remarks. At least 85% of the people here voted for Obama and aren't making those statements.

Since we're talking about King, I have to bring this up. Do any of you really think King would have supported gays and lesbians and our efforts to marry? I'm asking because as well all know he was a very religious man. If he followed the bible to the letter then I imagine we probably know our answer.

Nobody can be certain, but Coretta Scott King (his late widow) did vocally support same-sex marriage and viewed it as a civil rights issue.

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

He could start off being ashamed of his own family first:

In 1997, King's niece "denied that homosexuality is a "civil rights" issue. It is an issue left to the individual and God, she said. Homosexual "marriage" can never succeed, because God will not recognize it. When the leader of the African-American gay community told King that homosexuality was "bondage," she urged him to remain open to the possibility of finding a way out of it. (SOURCE: Mass. News http://www.massnews.com/past_issues/2000/Culture/cult24.htm).

In another place, Alveda King said that "God hates homosexuals"
(Source: MARTIN LUTHER KING'S NIECE LEADS AUGUSTA RALLY OF GAY-RIGHTS FOES http://www.maine.com/paula/pph/pph-2.6a.98.html), and that her uncle would agree with her positions on the subject.

Alveda King needs to go back to MLK core message ASAP. I agree with drhladnjak, she should listen to Coretta Scott King words on discrimination and homosexuality (I wish I had Alveda's King email address to send her these quotes)

Coretta Scott King message is clear:

"We have a lot more work to do in our common struggle against bigotry and discrimination. I say “common struggle” because I believe very strongly that all forms of bigotry and discrimination are equally wrong and should be opposed by right-thinking Americans everywhere. Freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation is surely a fundamental human right in any great democracy, as much as freedom from racial, religious, gender, or ethnic discrimination."
Coretta Scott King, November 9, 2000

"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brother- and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people."
Coretta Scott King, March 30, 1998

Young man, the gay community is perhaps the most diverse of all "communities."
All ethnicities; all 'faith communities'. All personalities and dispositions. Patient and impatient. Sensitive and not. There are gays who are instantly empathetic and those too caught up in the snake-jaws of their desires.
Oh, and like members of every other community, we can all learn how to be a little better every day.
I'm not sure if MLK, jr was sensitive to gay people. Given opportunity, though I'm sure he could see that they were a challenged people in his day. He also saw many, many people in need of a little inspiration and discipline. He spent little time being ashamed of others. And it is also true that anger gets in the way if indulged in for long. But anger is for a reason...

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Some of this gay "anger" should be directed at themselves and their leadership.

It was a poorly fought campaign, shouldn't have been about "demanding a right" but more about "sharing a privilege". Letting the straights feel good about themselves for admitting us to their club, instead of demonizing them.

I hope it's done better in the future....

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Oh boy...here we go again...

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Committing these violent acts will only make us look worse than ever.

what a lousy analogy you have made here - i think you need to study up a bit more on the actions and behaviours of the Black Panthers.:grrr:

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Ashamed... do you honestly think he was ashamed of violent black people? No. I just think he didn't like it. I don't think he was ashamed of anyone except those who took the rights away. I'm ashamed only of people who refuse to treat people like they are treated.

Retaliation is not a good thing, I'll agree. But digging up Dr King's name for that? I'd think he'd be much more ashamed of those who steal our rights. Retaliation is letting your frustration get the better of you. And getting frustrated is perfectly normal when someone and his friends are treated like some freakish fusion of livestock, punchbags, and sideshow freaks. To be denied human rights, and be declared an acceptable target of violence and mockery...

If there was a gay equivalent to Martin Luther King, he'd probably try and stop gay people being violent. However, I bet he'd save all of his shame for the ones who are taking away our rights.

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Funny....I wonder what Jesus would say about his church(s).

Well don't blame the Gay Community because we lack any real leadership, or one person to speak for the rest of us.

Don't forget that after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, the response was rioting, and our cities, including the nations capital burned for days!

It wasn't a group of pro-segregationists that started those fires.

I hardly think that the action of some alleged disgruntled "Gays" as anything by comparison.

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

Perhaps if Mr.Milk, and Mr.King Jr. were still around, or not disposed off in such nasty ways Prop 8 would of never even existed.

I find it disgusting that people are trying to start some kind of war between Black people and Gay people over this.

I agree, and if they new anything about Harvey Milk, he would be advocating against that type of tactic.

But riots ensued in San Francisco after Dan White was given a "light sentence" over his "twinkie defense" after he Murdered Harvey Milk and George Mosconi too.

If it weren't for a bunch of Drag Queens back in 1969 barricading a group of oppressive New City Police Officers in a bar called Stonewall, and then setting fire to it, we wouldn't be where we are today.

Many of us attended peaceful candel light vigils remembering our friends, who died from AIDS, and all that we got from the same group that oppressed us here, was more hatred and indignation for who are are, and that we infact deserved everything that we were suffering from.

I think that this will end up being a defining moment for our continued struggle for equality.

Mistakes will be made along the way, but the fact that so many are no longer complacent gives me renewed hope that everything that we've struggled for up to this point won't be lost.

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

I haven't been to one.

I don't have too. I've already been there, and will remain there.

I'm just happy that people are going, and that you're having the positive experiences that you've been having. :)

For those who've never been out on the street, exposing themselves in public, and taking a stand, don't be so quick to judge the rest of us.

If some of us weren't getting our hands dirty, we wouldn't be here.

Re: Martin Luther King Jr. Would Be Ashamed Of Gay

I think 'we' had (past tense) a wrong impression that Blacks as an whole considered us equally as in being a legit minority group as them.

Thats ok, we'll learn and adapt.

Really? Who had that impression? Because the homophobia in the black community has been talked about for years. Hence, the down low.
