Feral cats descended from domesticated pets brought from other continents centuries ago are wiping out several species of land mammals in Australia.

The government is planning a massive assault via poisoned sausages dropped aerially. The CBS article below did not go into how this is supposed to target just cats and not the carnivorous other species that will be in the same area.

What is the right solution? How should Australia go about exterminating what has become just as much a vermin problem as wharf rats or the introduced rabbits?

I'll tell you how they could solve the problem, buy me a plane ticket, i'll have it done in a week.

I did some further reading on the poison selected, sodium fluoroacetate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080_usage_in_New_Zealand

It naturally occurs in the flora of New Zealand and Australia, so is not toxic to the herbivores and predators there. That makes it ideal for targeting the invasive mammalian species.

Two million cats doesn't seem like very many. I'm sure the US has several times that population.

^ I'm surprised that they would kill off cats that easily. I think they are asking for a rodent problem.

Around here the city catches cats spays and neuters them and then releases them back where they caught them.

All you need is a tin of catfood and...........

I suspect the cost of trying to catch two million cats is prohibitive. And there are many of them far away from urban areas, I'm sure.

As for rodents, I think they would be killed alongside the cats, as they would surely eat the sausages too.

From what I gathered on Wikipedia, mammals are the target, which would include rats. Marsupials would not be harmed. On top of that, the poison is biodegradable so doesn't hang around.

One article said that certain areas are offering bounties on the number killed. It sounds like there is going to be an organized kill and collect effort.

I wonder where that leaves Dingoes.

I imagine with the Australian climate, they would be dried out, not to mention the plethora of insects that would eat them, and birds, and reptiles, and, and, and.

It will be interesting to see how it works. Invasive species are a problem the world over. We've created the problem in most cases, and it's on us to try to right the cart.

cats killed a lot of native birds,
i support reducing wild cats not native to Australia.

PETA has even had to come out with agreement that the cats are directly responsible for the extinction of several species already.

It's a bit like war -- there are no good ways to do it.

The cats have way too high a birth rate and way too much impact on the fauna to allow them to continue. And there just isn't any pretty way to end the lives of millions of cats. They cannot really let them live out their natural lives even if not reproducing, as they will continue to prey on all sorts of endangered species.

The jig is up. It could have just as easily been feline leukemia or a comet, but it's not. Mankind brought them into being and it's going to have to take them out.

Be kind. Spay/neuter your Australian.

This cannot end well.

With global warming and pollution, it won't be long before such places lose the ability to grow crops, and then, become uninhabitable. When they are sick and starving, they will wish they had cats to catch instead of songbirds.

'Mankind' is not going to go unpunished.

Will I still be able to get my General Tso's chicken?

Now I had to listen to Cats in the Kettle

I always wondered why Australia has so many extremely poisonous species. Is it how the ecosystem fights invaders?
