McCain defends Obama against anti-Arab comment

I see McCain as no different than an arsonist who sets a fire only to come in and try to get praise by putting it out. He started this fire! He is a despicable scoundrel! We can only pray that it won't lead to him having blood on his hands!!!

That's the real McCain. The Good McCain. The one the Pubs have nearly destroyed.

This is the McCain I know and respect.

Too bad, being honorable by not playing the race/religious/xenophobic card will hurt his campaign...

I think the scariest part is that there are people like this walking down the street with you and filling up their gas tanks next to your car.

I have to admit for a short time I was actually proud of McCain. Even as the crowd started to boo him, he stood his ground and did the right thing to set them straight. I give credit where it's due here.

Re: Obama's not an Arab?

Y'all got to give credit to McCain for doing the right thing (for once) responding to this situation. I was shocked. I didn't know he was capable.

I don't give credit when he and Palin incited this fear-mongering mob mentality shit in the first place.

"HE'S NOT ONE OF US!"

You don't get to clean it up after the fact, once your supporters' racist/sexist/homophobic comments get blown up in the press and your poll numbers dive.

Yeah and the right and far right hate him because he hasn't continued making a more bigoted case.

I wonder where that black guy is today that pleaded with McCain yesterday to make this race dirtier.

Fool.

At least it is better for one to stop digging the hole he already dug himself into rather than dig deeper.

Re: Obama's not an Arab?

But, but, but, if you're an Arab, you can't be trusted! You're probably a TERRORIST!

Hmm. Who is it who hijacks airplanes in and flies them into buildings.

Guess what? It isn't blue-haired grandmothers.

Hm...Timothy McVeigh...guess we can't trust white American military veterans either...

McCain's supporters are inbred backwoods guitar-strumming pinheads.

Like someone posted earlier, McCain started this fire - now he wants credit for throwing a glass of water at the flames? Ugh.

Just getting ready to mention that one.

The only problem with throwing a glass of water on this fire is: the fire is to big and it's a grease fire. He should have shot this down when the first guy said terrorist.

Re: Obama's not an Arab?

The US has has had the Village Idiot as President for the last 8 years and now we have the Court Jesters in for there go!!

All the problems that McCain and Co have are made by there own hands now they want you to believe that they are somehow not at fault. Now perhaps they are thinking beyond the election and trying to save face by saying "No Obama I defended you!!"

Hmm. Who is it who hijacks airplanes in and flies them into buildings.

Guess what? It isn't blue-haired grandmothers.

Well Henry I have a better question for you "Why do they want to hijack airplanes and fly them into your building?" It takes 2 to tango so maybe it has something to do with the way the US treats them. I have found that most people are reasonable and if they are treated fairly they will respond in kind.

From where I sit it is time for the US to start treating everyone fairly and not try to drive wedges or create problems. And No it doesn't come back to what you or I think but what is right can and should be done. :p

I'm not sure how much credit he deserves. He's been getting a lot of criticism from even fellow Republicans for the tone of these rallies. He & Palin stirred the pot and let it brew a whole week before doing anything about it. I'm convinced someone pulled him aside and asked him if this is the legacy he wants to be remembered for. Remember this was the guy who voted against MLK day.

Even today, they're purposely saying his middle name "Hussein" at rallies and such, on FOX News, etc.

Republicans do fear-mongering like no other.

Democrats are pretty good at it, too.
The problem is that when it's done on your own side of the fence, it doesn't look like fear-mongering.

Yes, he is. Joe Sixpack down t'the cess pool, who's voted Republican ever since Wendell Wilkie, says he is, and he should know 'cause Sarah Palin shoots moose from a plane.

OMG

No, he didn't start the fire. OTOH, as we used to parody the popular song:

"We didn't start the fire, but we're grabbin' fu-el and we're pilin' it higher!"

Why can't he always be like this?

:(

Two words: political handlers.

Hmm. Who is it who hijacks airplanes in and flies them into buildings.

Guess what? It isn't blue-haired grandmothers.

Who? People full of hate.

Beyond that, your post is brainless stereotyping.

Re: Obama's not an Arab?

McCain said that Obama was not an arab but he never actively disagreed with the implication taht being arabic was bad. There goes all the work republicans have put into courting the heavy arab vote around Detroit for almost ten years!

Exactly.

And it's the same as Obama and his supporters responding to those who say he's Muslim with, "He's not Muslim! He's a Christian!"

They don't say there's nothing wrong with being Muslim.

We have a big problem in the US with the divisions that Republicans have been nurturing for years to win elections, and Obama Democrats have been doing since early this year. It's widening and getting worse, not better. This Us versus Them, bullying, intimidating, shunning, dismissiveness, denigration of our fellow citizens is a destructive road. It was nice to see McCain make an effort in a way that could cost him votes, it's more than Obama has done, but as you rightly point out it wasn't enough.

Re: Obama's not an Arab?

^ It's a naive and/or simply baiting comment to suggest that Obama's supporters should rebut assertions that Obama is a Muslim by saying that there's nothing wrong with being Muslim. In that assertion, the word isn't being used in a benign way and engaging in the exchange as you suggest just gives it traction and sound bite spin.

Obviously, in a wider context, neither Obama nor his supporters have ever suggested there's anything wrong in being Muslim.

I don't see any of forced divisiveness that you see in Obama or heard many people, even those who disagree with his policies, raise the complaints you have against him. They're more your own particular problem. Obama is a cool tempered, let's use diplomacy first kind of guy. Not without his faults, but not the demon you see.
