The economic crisis and raw politics threatened to derail the first presidential debate as John McCain challenged Barack Obama to delay the Friday forum and join forces to help Washington fix the financial mess. Obama rebuffed his GOP rival, saying the next president needs to "deal with more than one thing at once."

Doesn't put Obama in a tough spot. In fact he could turn it into a position of power.

I think it looks like McCain isn't ready and wants more time to prepare. Sounds like someone who asks for more time to study for an exam.

Ah HA! They just said on CNN that McCain wants to postpone the debate until Oct 2. That in turn would postpone the vice presidential debate which is scheduled for Oct 2 until "some other time". It's not McCain that's not ready, it's Palin...... DUH!

What Obama should do is say OK I'll debate you Oct 2, but Friday you're up, Joe and Sarah.

The economy will almost certainly come up at some point Friday.

If for no other reason, a healthy American economy is relevant to both national security and foreign policy. The moderator will find a way to inject it into the debate.

No doubt about it which is why McCain wants to postpone the debate. To have the foreign policy debate held under these circumstances is not in his interest.

Earlier in the article, Sen. Harry Reid said that he didn't think McCain's and Obama's presence in Washington would be particularly helpful. It looks to me like melodramatic overreaction on McCain's part, but it's what I've come to expect from his campaign.

Who cares what Harry wants. Either McCain or Obama will have to deal with whatever is passed why shouldn't their views override his? Each is the nominal head of their parties.

I also add that I heard Obama say he called McCain at 8:30 this morning and McCain didn't return the call until 2:30.

If McCain really wanted to put politics on hold he would have called back sooner.

Most of the news coverage I've seen is being portrayed as McCain not being able to do two things at once ... which is not very presidential.

Looks like this move is backfiring on McCain.

I hate that Mccain is ALWAYS one step ahead of Obama. Chose a female VP, now Mccain is the one saying "Let's focus on the economy." Of course it can be interpreted a number of ways, a desperate move to give Palin more time to memorize her answers, or an attempt to look more concerned than Obama.

As usual, Mccain one-ups Obama and Obama looks like a donkey fool only interested in self-service.

Do you think for a second that if McCain had the upperhand on Obama and this economy was booming that he'd look to postpone a debate about the economy?

This is the week after McCain said the economy was fundamentally sound.

This delay was purely strategic.

And with McCain's polls sinking... NOT giving a debate is not "one step ahead" of Obama as McCain needs to ease Americans fears about the economy and his readiness to turn the economy around.

He's behind Obama in polls asking which candidate is better in handling the economy. Cancelling a debate can not help him.

I would have been more impressed if McCain had said something to the effect that 'since the economy is sinking, I think we should change the subject matter on Friday's debate to the economy and allow Americans to see our plans." But, again, I guess there wasn't time for him to prepare. I don't see the value of a foreign affairs debate right now given the econ catastrophies of the last 2 weeks.

It's ABC Blog and it covers a lot of things, but the video is something else. It must be the one he told Obama to make a joint agreement with him and he went ahead and made the speech anyway.

One step ahead? One-ups Obama? Yah if you are talking about "stunts" which Obama doesn't do(and apparently McCain NEEDS to do to keep this even close). Palin=stunt. Postpone debate=stunt. Negative lying ads after saying he would run an honorable campaign=stunt. Sounds desperate and chaotic. I don't want another president who pulls stunts cuz he isn't smart enough to be president, let alone multitask. He is trying to pull the old "razzle dazzle" as Chris Matthews just said on tv.

Clearly, McCain knows that a few Economic questions would still come up on Friday since this is The Hot Topic. And being that Rick Davis was taking money from Fannie and Freddie up until last month ... while still working for the McCain campaign ... and Obama would undoubtedly use that against him ... and the fact that McCain has a history of pushing for de-regulation with this being used against him ... he would be in pretty bad shape.

Democrats dismissed the moves as political gimmickry, and Sen. Obama replied that the debate should go forward as planned. "Presidents are going to have to deal with more than one thing at a time...It's not necessary for us to think we can only do one thing and suspend everything else," Sen. Obama said.

But by day's end, the two men had agreed to issue a joint statement calling for bipartisan cooperation for swift action, and both agreed to come to the White House Thursday for a summit meeting with President George W. Bush and congressional leaders to try to achieve that goal.

How so? How does Thursday's plans have anything to do with having a debate on Friday? Obama said he still plans on having the debate on Friday.

Too bad you can't seem to see the light, like the rest of your state did, by being the first state to put Obama on the map.

But that's the way it typically is with many within the 50 and over crowd. They just can't seem to let go of the past.

It was clearly a political move on McCain's part: Obama initiated this, and when things didn't go McCain's way, he jumped out and took the limelight.

I think President Bush sort of killed the controversy, though, by inviting both of them to the White House: both will be going to D.C., and what people will remember in a few days is that both went.
I think Obama's point about multitasking is going to play well, though, and that will give him more mileage out of this than McCain will get, especially if he shows up to debate and McCain doesn't, yet he's still doing the D.C. thing.
