Harvey Evans ( Cincinnati , January 7, 1941 ) is an American actor and dancer , known primarily as a performer of musicals.
He made his debut in the teenage theater in 1956, with the US tour of the musical Damn Yankees , and the following year he made his Broadway debut with New Girl in Town with Thelma Ritter . [1] After starring on the Babes in Arms tour in Florida, in 1957 he returned to Broadway in the hit West Side Story , followed by Redhead with Gwen Verdon and Gypsy: A Musical Fable with Ethel Merman . After the flop Anyone Can Whistle with Angela Lansbury in 1965, Evans left New York and joined the second US tour of the musical Hello, Dolly! with the original star Carol Channing : after about two years on tour, Evans returned to Broadway in the permanent production of Dolly! on stage at the Shubert Theater. To Dolly! followed two other Broadway musicals, The Boy Friend (1970) and Follies (1971). [2]
After an absence of nearly ten years, he returned to Broadway in 1980 as a substitute for Jim Dale in the title role of the musical Barnum . In the following decade he played in three other productions by Follies , in San Jose (1987), Houston (1987) and Long Beach (1990), followed by three other productions in 1998 (San Jose), 2003 (Ann Arbor) and 2004 ( Irvine). After Barnum he played Broadway three more times, in Sunset Boulevard (1994), The Scarlet Pimpernel (1997) and Oklahoma! (2002). [3]
