Why not sell merchandise? Doesn't that mean people support him and his products? By the way, the combine means little or nothing to REAL NFL execs and coaches. Sam did not do well at the combine, but what really matters is what he did on the field. He was co-player of the year in the SEC at Missouri. The guys who draft players will disregard his combine results on May 8th. Any player personnel executive in the NFL knows that it comes down to what players do on film, and many of them watch film 24/7.
Sams will be drafted in round 4, 5 or 6. He is 6'3" and 255 pounds, a tweener, (winky winky) so he may be drafted as a LB rather than a DE.

^Despite his dubious track record and lofty reasoning, this is one of the very, very, VERY few times where Morrisey has a valid point - Michael Sam SHOULD be more focused on getting into the NFL and less on selling his jersey.

What if Michael Sam does not get drafted?
I have read some negative articles about Michael Sam recently from some Yahoo sports reporter Anwar Richardson. I am reading mixed opinions some say Sam is too short and slow to make it into the NFL. Other articles say you cannot use the combine to make a consensus about Sam. I think there is a real fear in the NFL about Michael Sam I do not think people realize how macho and homophobic the NFL is. I hope Michael Sam gets drafted but I also hope he gets a team where he will be safe and comfortable. Remember the Incognito and Jonathan Martin incident with the Miami Dolphins. Let's say Sam gets drafted will the straight guys be nice to him or ostracize him? I wonder which team will draft Sam?

I'm not sure on the stats when it comes to professional American sports, but in other sports like football (soccer) and rugby it has been shown that the players are pretty unanimous in their sport for fellow athletes to come out - its just wider media and the fans that make it harder, as well as the public eye being on you.
In reports on college football (American) from the past ten years it seems to be the same - the fellow players won't care if you are gay on the whole. In the first part of the 2000s it was the case that to be accepted as gay and a team mate you needed to be a very good player, but in the second half of the decade ability has meant a lot less and all players tend to be accepted. So lets hope the pro league is much the same behind closed doors.
