1. The NFL does not promote a thug stereotype. It's black stars are Cam Newton, Russel Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Odell Beckham Jr, etc. NONE of them have this "nigger" stereotype or whatever Morissey is blabbing about.

2. Michael Sam was a good college football player. He was a marginal NFL talent and had several chances to make an NFL roster. He simply wasn't good enough.

3. If Michael Sam hadn't come out he would be irrelevant.

4. Tim Tebow has a heisman, a college championship, a winning record as a qb and a playoff win. Yet he couldn't get signed as a backup. How does race and sexual orientation play into that?

This is an example of why "privilege theory" fantasy is so dangerous: Michael Sam is entitled to play football like anyone else. He was the first to come out in his career of any colour. Instead of celebrating him as a trailblazer shaking up a dinosaur sports culture for all people of any colour, people make wild assumptions about what "would have happened" if he were white. (who knows, because a black guy was the pioneer here but just for fun lets ignore that and tear him down along with his mysterious white entourage..)

It is ridiculous to Just Know™ that he'd be playing football in the US if he were white as if the White Magical Gayness Fairy™ would have spread Glitter of Trouble-Free Acceptance and White Approval™ all over him.

And the Rules of Coming Out are as follows: Everybody come the fuck out. If somebody else doesn't like it, that's their problem. Michael Sam was right to come out. It is no big fucking deal. If NFL can't handle it, or if black straight men can't handle it, it is their fucking loss or if Black Intersectional fuckity fuck fuck whatever isn't ready for it, too bad.

michael sam basically shot himself in the foot when he came out and made his sexuality the headline than his actual talent. he probably would have had more of a chance to get into the NFL if he came out AFTER he hit the big leagues then before. if he came out while he was in the NFL, then that would have completely changed the whole show. also the way he came out as well. think that it's more of the presentation of how guys like jason collins and michael sam do it that makes it more into a joke than something serious. i remember distinctly how michael sam about some months right before he even entered the draft had some website set up where he was selling t-shirts and pins about "support the first openly gay nfl player" and all this crap. he was basically making his sexual orientation a bigger deal than his actual skills.

they basically used their sexual orientation more as a career advancement move and for fame than actually just going like "i'm gay and this is who i am. let me be and that's that." i also think that for the sake of ourselves, we need to stop putting the whole gay rights movement on the back of these guys. you know, that's not helping them out as well as ourselves. let them do what they do and stop holding them to be some representatives for the whole entire gay rights movement.

the truth of the matter is michael sam didn't do too well in showing that he was worthy of being in the NFL and him trying to be the "gay sports star poster child" didn't help him at all.

They didn't support him. They've pretty much killed his career despite no charges bringing brought up against him. If you paid any attention at all the NFL has been EXTREMELY harsh against any "thug" stereotypes.

I think I kinda get what MorrisseyX is saying.... even if I don't exactly agree with it. The truth is Michael Sam didn't get a lot of support from black media or the community at large and thats likely because he is gay and because he is at best a average football player by pro standards. As much of a sterotype as this sounds homosexuality in the black community is generally not as accepted or at the very least openly accepted as it might be in other communities.

All that said where I disagree is that if it were a white guy say Tim Tebow coming out. He would not get anymore coverage by black media than Michael Sam got. In fact he would probably get a little less coverage. The black community as a whole would in my opinion be just as indifferent to Tebow as they were to Sam. The only thing that would change if it were a white player imo is the coverage by the mainstream media.

He has way more white supporters than black, and that's rare for a black athlete.

I think the majority of homophobia in the AA community is based off Christianity which in most if not all black and white religious congregations kinda shun on.

I do think there are many blacks who are kinda don't ask don't tell about it. If there is a lesbian daughter, or gay uncle, it's not really talked about or advertised and they are kinda shunned from the family and they usually keep their children away from them.

But I do agree with you. Blacks are no more homophobic than whites. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. It doesn't help how I constantly switch sides too, I need to pick a team and stay with that one.

You obviously are not paying attention the mainstream white media are supporting sam not the black media. The root.com blasted sam a few weeks ago. Ebony ignored sam. While gq magazine and out magazine put him on the cover. Sam was on dancing with the stars getting paid 100k per episode.The black community is apathetic to sam the straight blacks see him as a disgrace to black manhood and masculinity. The black press are disgusted by Sam I have read a lot of negativity about sam on many black sport boards like coli.com. The straight black men are repulsed by Sam they see him as a disgrace.
