And apparently Michael Sam is a very good player. I don't follow football but I remember hearing something on some sports show about how he would have been picked a lot earlier in a draft if he was straight.

Michael Sam's next career move could be with Montreal Alouettes

Michael Sam's chances of playing in the NFL are slim, but his career prospects north of the border seem healthy.

The Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League told the Montreal Gazette they believe they have a chance at signing Sam.

“The CFL is cut out perfectly for his style,” Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp said Tuesday. “It would give him the opportunity to do what he does best.

“The indications were he was ready to come last fall, and he’s still not with us," Popp continued. "So I really don’t know. Seriously, I’d say our chances are 50/50."

Montreal - The Montreal Alouettes announced on Friday that the club has signed international defensive end Michael Sam to a two-year deal. Sam (6’2’’, 260 lbs.) joins the Alouettes after spending the 2014 season in the National Football League with the St. Louis Rams and the Dallas Cowboys.

The 25-year-old athlete developed his playing abilities with the University of Missouri Tigers in the NCAA. In four seasons with the Tigers, Sam registered an impressive 123 total tackles of which 36 were for losses and 21 total sacks. He also notched two interceptions.

“With the signing of Michael Sam, we have become a better organization today,” said Alouettes’ general manager, Jim Popp. “Not only have we added an outstanding football player, we have added even a better person that brings dignity, character, and heart to our team.”

There was Detroit(I think it was) that drafted him, and promptly dropped him before the season even began. Supposedly his presence on the team was a "distraction".

Was Sam dropped due to homophobia? Probably. Does it really matter if homophobia in sports forces gay men to get a real job, and possibly make a difference in the world? No.
