I didn't know that microsoft produces laptops :P

MACs can and do get viruses but they are more of an irritation when they do occur in contrast to the absolute havoc which they cause to their PC counterpart.

The amount of havoc that is cause only depends on the virus.

Having said that .. just nobody cares to write virii for the mac. But this is changing. Especially since it is rather well known that mac os has more holes than swiss cheese. they regularly get broken first in pwn2own hacking competitions and the likes.

Having said that, MACs are far more useful if the intended use is for Design & Multimedia. Software availability used to be a major problem but this has become less so now. The only real downside is the price.

I have heard that Windows 7 is really good (or at least a lot better than Vista and XP) for design and multimedia. So perhaps Windows is starting to catch up to apple in that area.

Me personally, I would choose to build my own PC and install Windows and whatever software I need.

Now I just need to learn how to build a PC.

Ive never understood why Macs dont get viruses. Why is that?

Maybe that can be a 'pro' for buying a Mac even though I prefer Microsoft

Because windows has always been the dominant choice of users globally, so it was pretty useless for quite a while to make a virus for a mac or other operation system. Especially since the corporate world uses Windows.

Now that macs are more popular, and just as venerable as pc's, there are more viruses for macs coming around.

Also, it is all user based as far as viruses go. If you get a virus, it is because you did something wrong. An educated user should never get a virus on any OS if they don't do risky things. And I'm not saying you can't download torrents and stuff, just be smart about it.

know what your doing when you download things and when you surf the web... A new movie release download file that is like 1MB or something, isn't a movie....its far too small to be a movie, but a lot of dumb people will download it, do whatever it asks, and BOOM, they just downloaded, and installed a virus on their computer. One that is very avoidable...

If your browsing the web and a webpage pops up saying you have x amount of viruses or malware, and you need to download this free malware remover tool to get rid of them....DON'T. That IS a virus.

Viruses prey and feast on ignorance. More and more they are becoming non discriminatory towards what OS you use as far as macs and pc's.

i have desktop pc in my office and an apple lap top in my kitchen that i just use for browsing the web. the apple blows the pc's away with it's speed and ease of use.

windows machines are computers; apple machines are toys
haha!

I prefer Apple because the unix foundation makes it much more capable imo.

The interface is better.

And you can still run Windows if you need to.

At one time that was true, but not any more. Apple seems intent on alienating the design community, especially in large network environments. A major university I live near has just announced that they will be transitioning their VisCom programs to Windows-based PC's. They aren't alone; it's happening all over the country. MAC permissions and Snow Leopard have really pissed of a lot of industry professionals. Well, that plus Apple's slow to no response to their concerns.

windows machines are computers; apple machines are toys... buy what you need to fill your needs!

Exactly. ..| Also, if you buy an Apple you will be in the company of stuck-up, we are better then everyone else, snobs.

We're not stuck up. We're just objective about our place in the world.

I prefer Apple. The first time I used a Mac, I realised that right out of the box it worked the way I had always wanted to have my Windows PC work. I decided I no longer wanted to waste my time forcing a Windows machine to be something it wasn't when I could just buy the Mac.

It only annoys me very infrequently. And the Windows PC I still have to use at work annoys me either continuously, or when I least expect it.

the first time I used a Mac, it took me half an hour and an internet search to figure out how to eject a floppy disk and I never went back :p

Want something out of a Mac? Goes back to the earliest days. Throw it away (drag it to the trash)! Elegantly simple.

Floppys, CD's, Drives, Applications, Old Files, whatever. It all works the same. :D

didn't read all the other posts.... but anyways.

depends on what you want to do. If you like making videos and other multimedia apps, then go apple.

I HATE my sister's apple computer. I mean like throw it out the window when I went to use it. I also hated my friend's mac pro laptop thing.

I love my gateway PC and I'm sad I'll be needing to get a new computer soon.

I just prefer my PC to mac any day. The only apple product that i like is my iphone.

I also think the apple computers are over priced.

LOL. I remember that. That was in the bad old days before Mac OS X. I remember how stupid that was.

Drag something to the trash to
a) ensure that your important file copied to the disk for safekeeping is neatly ejected from the computer, or
b) destroy your important file forever in the usual meaning of the the expression "to trash something."

Take your pick!

That may actually qualify as the dumbest user interface decision ever, on any computer, anywhere.

It got better though. Now you just push the eject key on the keyboard and everything pops out all safe and sound. And the trash is just for...well...trashing things. Works like a charm.

Ok so I am about to get new laptop but I don;t really know if I should stay with Microsoft or Apple...

What is your choice?

There are a few points to consider:

* If you only plan to surf the web, watch some YouTube videos, check/send email and log in to JUB, than go with an inexpensive NetBook. You can get some very nice models for $200-300 these days.

* Next, ask yourself if you really need portability. One of the ‘cool’ features about iBook is that you can walk around with them. But do you really need that? Laptops typically have much shorter lifespans than desktops because the #1 cause of computer damage is heat. No laptop has the ability to dissipate enough heat to adequately protect the hardware. It just isn’t yet possible. Most laptops experience failures within 5 years. Desktops, on the other hand, can last decade(s).

So, do you want to spend several hundred dollars on a laptop that will rarely ever leave your house, or the same amount of money on a sturdy desktop that will be around for many more years?

* If you do need portability (and in my experience, the vast majority of people do not), than I’d suggest an upper-tier windows-based PC, like an ASUS. Their warranty is very good and their prices are quite reasonable for the quality of the products. Don’t listen to people who will tell you Macs are "industry standard" for things like Graphic Design, etc. That’s an old early 90s cliché.

* If you are a slave to trendy brand names, than go with a Mac. Sorry, but having owned 2, that’s just how I feel. Most Mac hardware is the exact same as what you will find in Windows-based PCs. Surprised? Don't be. Mac pays a premium to not advertise that fact! (IE: the lack of an “Intel inside” sticker on the frame.) Suggestions that they are inherently ‘faster’ or superior in terms of hardware are flawed. Macs are nothing more than an OS in a designer frame filled with much the same hardware you will get in a Windows-based ASUS at a fraction of the cost.

Don't beleive me?

One of the ‘cool’ features about iMacs is that you can walk around with them.
For someone that claims to have owned Macs, you seem rather uninformed about them. An iMac is a desktop, not a laptop.

Macs are nothing more than an OS in a designer frame filled with much the same hardware you will get in a Windows-based ASUS at a fraction of the cost.

Pretty much true, but that OS is the best OS available for any computer, bar none. And that isn't just my opinion. Plenty of other people (even Windows users) feel the same way.

Ouch. Throat rape me with a cactus for a typo. Thanks. (For the record, I did catch that typo but when pasting my message I neglected re-fix it. I owned an iMac, too.)

That is a safely ambiguous statement. Plenty of people know that.

No, even Adobe now publishes some of its software for Windows first.

Many illustrators use Corel's Painter on Windows, 3D and CAD are also more popular on that operating system.

You compare the speed of two computers by browsing the net? #-o

Linux PC? Or Windows PC? Maybe MacOS PC?

Macs are PCs too. You need to mention the operating system. A personal computer is just the "box".

Paws, if he had a Mac PC, then why would he say "I just prefer my PC to a mac any day?"

I like my Mac, but I do a lot of traveling and I needed something light and halfway decent. I have too many problems with my Vista PC and it runs a lot slower.

If I didn't need to travel as much, I'd probably just get a PC because I can't do much gaming on my laptop and that's something that I used to enjoy doing. It's also easier to write documents in Word and not have to worry about exporting from Pages, especially when I'm writing my resume.
