Mike Huckabee's New Anti-Gay Phone Campaign

I just received a new call - this time I have details. This last call was from Huckabee rallying against the "Freedom From Religion Foundation", and he claimed that they were trying to "eliminate the national day of prayer" and something about erasing religion from "our country". He promoted a group called the "Society for Faith and Family" I think.

I was able to speak with a live operator this time and have my number removed from their list - I was far too kind to the person, but they kind of sounded like a lower class wage slave and having done that type of job before (phone surveys...ugh) I didn't really have the heart to go off on them.

Anyway, the number I took down was [Phone number: Removed by Moderator]...this comes back to an organization called the "National Committee for Faith and Family"...probably responsible for the other robo spam as well. I really have my doubts that this kind of strictly religious rallying/solicitation is legal.

Religious speech is just as and a bit more protected than regular speech. They have a legal right to use such advertising venues to spread their message and if its linked to political activities its even more protected. If the message is simply religious proselytizing then I'm not sure how it falls in relation to 'Do not call' lists but these calls seem to have a political aspect to them.

There really needs to be a provision in the DNC registry for this kind of unwanted solicitation, because every time elections of any kind are even on the horizon we get tons of phone spam. We have it for email spam, it should also apply to phones as well. I doubt I'm the only American tired of it.

Free speech can be practiced in public venues - I have no problem with that. But this kind of behavior moves from public space to my private space, and for some people the only way to get rid of it is to unhook their phones from the jack. And I highly doubt that I'd be allowed to go around robocalling people to support an atheist institution - you'd see all the fundies go absolutely haywire.

Nor, according the SCOTUS, does it matter if you're a person or not -- so corporations have free speech.

The First Amendment may guarantee free speech, but I have the option of not picking up the phone.
Might one consider Caller I.D.? Just a thought. :D

Robo-calling is illegal in Australia. It's considered a nuisance bordering on a breach of privacy. Don't know why the US still allows this nonsense.

My personal opinion is that my cell phone, which I pay the bill for, is not 'public space' for people to rant at me.

I give up -- what does that have to do with my post???

Don't give up. I was just suggesting that we don't have to be victimized by these miscreants. It's like the old Woody Allen joke. He kept getting crank phone calls from one of his many ex-girlfriends... collect. Have I missed something?

Okay, but I wasn't talking about that -- Stardreamer noted it doesn't matter if you're a politician, you have free speech, and I pointed out that it doesn't even matter if you're human -- corporations have free speech.

And there's not much way to avoid them; they have millions of dollars worth of free speech.
