If--for whatever reasons--you are able-bodied and receive assistance from the government you should be assigned work by the government. If you don't want to work and lose the support you have been given that is your choice and you need to accept the consequences. Compassion is not the primary issue. The primary issue is one of societal ethics.

The minimum wage is not welfare. Many qualify for assistance even though they work, if wages would get them out of the poverty bracket then they wouldn't get their food stamps.
