Misleading avatars?

*flaps wings*

Nonsense.

*bwaaaawwwwwk*

But there are pics of [STRIKE]me[/STRIKE] my owner in [STRIKE]my[/STRIKE] his gallery if you must.

I started only in the male celebs, but havebranched out. But i still like to show a part of me. So, i show I like Logan Lerman. I might need to change it though.

I'd say my avatar is a very accurate representation of my corporeal form.

I dunno. Never really had any problem with this, for a variety of reasons.

First, my time on messageboards predates the advent of digital photography. Back in the day, we usually had to pick from a small group of acceptable (usually cartoon) avatars. So I got used to avatars meaning "here's an image I like". And on a gay male messageboard with a heavy porn emphasis, one would hardly be surprised that many of us would find an image of a hot guy or porn star or good-looking body part, and say "here's an image I like". :)

Secondly, even with the advent of digital photography, I never have any issue confusing a hot avatar for the JUBber. Let me use Hard-Up as an example, since he posted above. When I first started noticing his posts on a regular basis, I don't ever think I thought his avatar was him. Not because I thought "no way is this smart person this hot", but because his avatar doesn't look like a self-pic. It looks like a model or actor's 8 x 10 b&w glossy. So I assumed it was a "here's an image I like" picture, not a "this is me" picture. And that's true across the board. I can't say I often play the "is that really him" game - I rarely care that much what people look like, unless I'm forming some sort of bond with them by conversing with them. But if I'm idly wondering, it's less the attractiveness of the guy in the picture, and more the quality of the shot, that sways me one way or the other. It seems most of the JUBbers who use male-but-not-me-photo avatars stick with actors, porn stars and models. Some of us might be hot, but very few of us are professional photographers. :)

Third point. It's rare for me to "want to see more" - I'm more turned on by hot personalities than hot body parts. But if I find a guy intriguing, and I want to know more, I just visit their JUB home page. If they're that hot guy in their avatar, they tend to have a gallery with more photos. Or they'll have a gallery of photos (or, like Hard-Up, a profile pic) that makes it clear that the avatar isn't them. (Me being me, I'll usually be more intrigued with the real photos, anyway.) And if they have no gallery, I assume the profile picture probably isn't them. Easy peasy.

I've used that Lex-looking-at-porn-on-the-floor-of-the-castle avatar almost from the get-go. It's come to mean "Lex" more than anything else. People have said they recognize and like that every time it pops on the screen. I switched it with a face pic for about a week...and people complained - they wanted the gargoyle back. :) i recently swapped out my profile pic for the "horny gargoyle" drawing (it summed things up well) but my galleries are still open for business for all who care to see me in the (clothed) flesh.

The unclothed flesh? You gotta earn that. :)

I think an avatar is a picture that represent what the person is or how the person feels. If some people wants to show someone their face then so be it, If someone feels like an elephant then they will put up an elephant as an avatar.

One can always exchange pictures via PM.

I have pictures of me on the site and in my little profile.

I could give a fuck what you think of my avatar.

I have always used an avatar with the late actor John Belushi on it. people told me all the time, when I was younger, that I resembled him. As I am now deep in middle age, it may not be so true, but it's a good representation of what people will see when they see me in person.

Because of my teaching career, and the fact that I work for a conservative school district, I will not put up a picture of myself.

How exactly were you mislead? When you registered, was there a statement from JUB that said everyone's avatar must be a real photo of themselves? Do you even know the definition of avatar? Are we required to share our real life with you?

Sorry we all do not have the same expectations as you. But it is only an internet forum of mostly strangers after all. It's not Craigslist, Manhunt, or some other hookup service where real photos really ought to be required.

Hard to believe the good looking guy in my avatar is me, but yes. It is.

it's pretty common knowledge that Lex is a gargoyle IRL ;)

the one thing that creeps me out a bit is when people use other people's photos and suggest that it's themselves (I remember some big drama around the time I joined the forums when a frequent poster in the "show yourself off" thread was found to be posting pictures of some random model and photoshopping stuff into the pic to suggest that it was really them)

I started joking around with the gargoyle persona here on the forums early on. Just random joke-y things like "don't make me thump you over the head with my tail" or "wanna slip off to the dark part of the castle?" And a lot of people enjoyed it, so I kept it up. Whenever I'd post an actual photo or refer to my real life, I'd get someone posting something like "I was hoping you were really a gargoyle :("

Which makes me feel weird when we get one of these "fakes". Because technically, I'm playing the same game. Adopting a fake persona and playing around with it. Yeah, I have drawings instead of photos, and one probably would argue that if a JUBber really thought there was a gay gargoyle posting here, he'd either be really slow or really deluded. But I don't think the gap is that wide. People want to believe. They want to believe there's a gay friendly/helpful/horny gargoyle posting here (depending on what they like), and they want to believe there's a hot bodybuilder/model/straight guy posting here. And so they buy into the game, and get saddened when it's revealed not to be.

I guess, to me, the main difference isn't so much that "gargoyles aren't real and bodybuilders are". It's that I'd like to think there's more to my posting than that. I've made plenty of online friends here, and I don't think they're all gargoyle fetishists. :) They enjoy the substance beneath the 2D green exterior. If that gets removed, I'm still Lex. But with most of the "fakes", the personality seems to begin and end with "I'm a hot guy". Once that's removed, there's nothing left to care about.

I just don't care for pictures of myself. So, I haven't used one. Until recently I was using a sort of water drops on purple thing. Some time back there was a everybody use purple day and I've just been to lazy to change it. Until last week when I saw the thing I'm using now.

As you can see mine is simply a hand reaching out to you........If you choose to take it......is your choice! I do have a real pic of myself in my profile.

Some people are just respecting employer's requests to separate on-line personal activities from job duties so there is no confusion.

This is the first forum I've been on where some people DO have pics of themselves as their avatars!

I wish I could come up with a clever or witty reason why I chose my avatar. Really...I just like showing off my ass.

When I first started here, I had numerous celebs as I wasn't prepared to have my own image on view to a load of strangers. Then I discovered Christian Klein, and went on a one man crusade to share him with everyone. Despite the fact that I actually had his name under the image (and still do on my signature) I STILL had people ask if it's me, so I don't even bother with his name anymore if people can't be arsed to read his name. I DO sometimes have me in my avatar, but I think everyone is so used to Christian now. I have my image on my profile though.
