I've tried to find a decent avatar ever since I started posting here regularly. Something to represent my personality or something I'm into (pop culture-wise, I don't mean sexually, lol). But I could never find anything that really fit the bill. I also didn't want to use a face picture, so I finally settled on a pic of my chest. I'm already sick of looking at myself though. lol.

I have never thought of this as a hookup site. Personally, I like to see who I am talking to or debating with, that's all.

Just as an observation, in general I would say that there is more rudeness in the forums from people who do not show their faces than from those who do.

On the other hand, a lot of the replies here have presented good arguments as to why an avatar should be non literal and I appreciate that.

Why would people using their own photos as their avatar be less rude than the ones using other pictures? It's not like you can come over to their place and plunge them into a piranha pond should they use their own photos and then insult you.

Pictures are pictures. They have nothing to do with our manners online and they cannot protect us from everything.

And even "straight" messageboards can be made gay if you give them enough alcohol and play your cards right.

I have my picture up on JUB finally anyways in a few threads, so I broke that wall. But to be honest, if someone that knows me finds my picture here then I already know something more about them (for surfing a gay forum).

Regarding anonymity on the internet, meh. I won't go out giving personal location details and etc but I don't need to hide. If I was that concerned about privacy I would have learnt how to use proxy's a long time ago.

If this were a dating site, I could understand the need for real pictures... My avatar is of a fairly famous male model, so I never thought it would come across as misleading. I never claimed to be Kevin Peake. I agree with all the guys who have already stated that our chosen avatars say more about us than a real photo would.

Of all the forums I am part of, none have a substantial number of members who use real pictures as avatars.
