  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Miss America drops swim wear and evening wear segments.

Oh, horror. You've accused me of being a Trump supporter, completely void of any post ever supporting Trump, in contradiction of many posts against Trump.

Everything is so obvious, there's no need for anyone to ever post anything. It's all Post-Modernist and Neo-Marxist with you anti-patriarchy martyrs.

Oh, sorrow. I'll just run over here to the corner and shrivel from shame and rejection by such a fair judge. As if.

The "real beauty is in the inside" army has won. I predict a rise of fat, or nerdy(or both) girls trying to enter the competition.

Also, NotHardUp1 is too cool to support scum like Trump.

First of all, don't put words in my mouth. Second of all, yes it is a new political climate in a society where most women (whether they be biological or not) feel uncomfortable at the idea of having a contest that elaborates really only the physical quantities of its contestants. Miss America is nothing more than a power fantasy for teenage boys and married men who have grown bored with their wives. People have been and still are protesting against mainstream conceptions of beauty; modeling, hollywood, etc which is why I expressed shock that it took this long for them to ax the swimsuit portion (or the show entirely). The show is founded upon sexism, I know it's an inconvenient truth, but it is a truth nonetheless.
(Psst. Let me tell ya a little secret. Women don't get all gussied up to impress men. They do it to impress other women.)

Well, it's not Miss Soviet.
But Miss America will remain in Atlantic City, where she belongs. (I was there Monday.) With two casino openings this month, the Boardwalk Bash long drive golf competition yesterday, and the LPGA ShopRite Classic this weekend (I am going!) Atlantic City is on a roll.

That's not really a secret, although it only speaks for a minority of the spectrum.
I think its the vast majority of women. They know who their competition is. The ones that don't care don't matter to them.

if pageants weren't already tired, hiring Steve Harvey as a host affirmed my intuition which told me to never watch that grotesque parade in the first place.

I just finished a Star article about how rotten Steve Harvey was to his first two wives. (He's on #3.) He's never hosted Miss America, anyway.

But the parade is the best part of Miss America! It goes down the Boardwalk with all 51 candidates on floats or in cars. All local high school bands participate (Mainland is usually best). They pass New York Avenue, the long-ago gay strip...where tradition lives and parade viewers yell, "Show us your shoes!" Now, in an alternate reality some claim straight men did this to see some leg. Uh-uh. It's a gay thing. The ideal response is for Miss Wherever to remove her shoes and wave them to the cheering queens.

Oh, those years when the Pageant was in Vegas were sad. No parade.

Atlantic City and the boardwalk have a great history and a magic found nowhere else. I visit there once a year and just LOVE it. long live AC!

I would like it known however, that I would welcome a swimsuit competition that nakedly objectifies the finest man meat that wants to strut the stage.

I wonder if it will retain any popularity without the swim suits. I would guess that at least some of its audience watched it for the sex appeal. Maybe it will gain another whole demographic of viewers?

It was already dying along with most of its audience.

The pageant is being demonized, but the idealization of women has been common throughout the world. You can't look at every depiction of female beauty and automatically conclude it is intended only for the subjugation of women.

The Venus de Milo isn't popular merely because it is headless.

In recent decades, the pageant was just a parade of Stepford Wife-like women, but hardly suggested that their only place was in the kitchen.

That it declined was no surprise, as that sort of contest really is passe, regardless of appearing sexist. I doubt it will be missed much, as its audience is literally dying out.

Do they still do those beauty paegents for young kids? Hopefully they will change too haha.

^ Fortunately, these have become a lot less visible on 'reality' TV shows as issues with child sexualization and exploitation by fucked up adults came to wider attention.

Best we can do is "championship wrestling".

And, years later, all Atlantic City has is the annual "Miss'd America" drag queen pageant. But AC DOES play that up.in their tourism ads. They've lost all their gay bars, though, and only have special events. The guy behind "My Big Gay Italian Wedding" brings a spinoff to the Hard Rock a couple times a year. Borgata advertises in gay media.
