On-Topic Missouri Republican’s Controversial Remarks Regarding “Legitimate Rape”

The best part is Akin did not get out of the race. So now we get to see if Missourians will elect a scumbag over what many of them consider a dirtbag in mcCaskill. Makes things interesting. What is even more amusing is that the Republicans have wonderful plans to retake the Senate and each year they are thwarted by .... (drum roll please) .... Themselves... never has there been such a morally bankrupt, corrupt group of non-leading dirtbags as is in today's GOP. Let by the morally bankrupt corrupt flip flopping master of the weathervane Mitt Romney......

Aiken was a no-name congressman who was not known out of his district. He was created by Claire McCaskill primary campaign to choose her opponent -- JH, I know you've seen some of the ads she and her pac's ran before the primary.

I don't care for either one. I do hope that Aiken will resign the nomination and the MSM digs into McCaskill's past -- she's not an honorable woman.

We need another choice in Missouri.

You keep saying this misconception about Claire (we are on a first name basis now)... how Claire ran ads against her opponents but the WSJ who is tracking only has ads run Against Brunner. Nothing for Akin to put him in the drivers seat while choosing her opponent. Could you please provide SOME proof of that? I can find none at any of the political money tracking sites.

I did see plenty of ads where the republicans tore each other apart and then they were endorsed by the person running the ad. Are you saying Claire gave money to Akin so he could tear down his opponents?

I didn't mean to damage Fla. I just found it funny that the elephangelicals may have to move their convention after they spent all that money on decorations. Anyway they are the ones that say God does this or God does that.

Oh I know I find it quite darkly amusing. However I wanted to nip that in the bud before the next twenty posts became about meany mean words instead of substantive topics....

No Claire did not give money to Aiken.

But he was perhaps most helped by Ms. McCaskill and her Democratic supporters, who spent close to $2 million on ads that painted Mr. Akin as too conservative for the state, in a tacit effort to bolster his candidacy among primary voters.

I assume you'll accept NYT as a reliable source.

I do and that is very interesting. Although not germane I was looking for Super PAC money because that is what you initially indicated.

I think if you look at Akin's stance on how the human body works and then McCaskill's shrewd use of campaign funds to shape the race she hopes to win then you can only conclude she is the one with better judgement.

supporters = pacs

I hope Aiken or whoever it finally is goes after Claire's past -- there is much there.

I think Aiken made a stupid statement and hope he withdrawals. Too bad the dem's were never rough on a guy like Ted Kennedy who had very little regard for women and was even involved in the death of one.

If he stays in, he has a good chance. MO is a Republican state and most of his potential voters are probably pro life who will understand that he was not condoning rape. The ones who do not like what he said will not think it should over ride the important issues.

Defiant Akin says he's staying in race

Defiant Akin says he's staying in race - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

[Laughs] Yeah, is that a republican doing the "right" thing? Why then do they do the "wrong" thing in the first place? This is why I don't give these radical republicans a break.

So the Radical Right approves of rape if it's not forceable? Or is it they just don't think it's rape if it's not forced upon a woman?

The "right thing" is to get these Radicals out of office by any means possible. To quote another right wing radical....It may even include using our second amendment rights.

Don't retreat; reload.

Yes and the Republicans are pulling all support from him, they begged him withdraw and have told him flat out he will get no support from the party. By doing so they have pretty much given up the seat and any chance they had at taking the Senate. So yes I think they are acting on principle here.

The difference is Akin said publicly what the Radical Right believes. Romney and AWESOME Ryan won't say it publicly. They're two faced cowards.

This is nothing more than Mr Money Bags putting on a show for the voters.

I rather doubt that most pro-life conservatives believe that women don't get pregnant from rape. Akin grabbed hold of some utterly false science probably from the internet to reach this conclusion, it is the first time I ever even heard of the idea and I hear a lot of conservative debate so it is not a common belief. It a common thing among true believers to grab onto anything that supports their position without thinking about it critically and that really seems to be what happened here. You see it all the time on BOTH sides of the climate change debate as well as the abortion debate. None the less it was an utterly stupid thing to say and if he had bother to take 5 seconds to think about it would have realized it boils down to the abysmal blame the victim thinking. Mistake or not, it was a line that shouldn't be crossed by a congressman and that is why he is being abandoned by the party.

Not without the party he doesn't and the party has dropped him like a hot potato. He will be running his election entirely on his own resources, even Crossroads GPS is repudiating him.

Vote Libertarian.

BTW, Stardreamer, I heard the "rape can't result in pregnancy" notion once in a discussion after Alan Keyes had spoken. He slapped it down hard.

It is not a sound a position even assuming there is something to the science. It is possible that in cases of really traumatic rape the shock may make conception harder but there is no guarantee that it would prevent pregnancy. From a moral standpoint it is simply an atrocious position to take which is why everyone who bothering to take 5 seconds to think about it are running from this guy.

Well from the news cycle this morning, Akin's 'apology' seems to only be making things worse.

It is shining a bright spotlight on the Republican platform and on Paul's own involvement in legislation that will surely drive more women voters away from Team Romney and other Republicans come November.

It depends on whether another enters the race as a write in and splits the Republican vote.

I guess they could always move it to God's own theme park, Branson, Missouri (rhymes with misery), where Aikin has been bizzy mixing the Kool-aid and planing the plank on Rape for the RNC platform.

Aiken is from St. Louis -- not Branson.

I see.

So he couldn't mix up his refreshements, throw them in the van and head on down to meet up with all the refugees at the Branson Bible camp where they can discuss how only whores get pregnant if they are raped.

The idea that rape victims cannot get pregnant has a long medical history including some medieval laws (UK)

The Science section of The Guardian has a brief article on Akin and the history of the "legitimate rape" concept. Akin might have been exposed to the concept in divinity school, adding some unsupported science later on.
