Mortal Kombat: "Rebirth" - MOVIE TRAILER TEASER

And what about the new 2011 game? Here's the trailer for it. Looks dope!! So glad they went back to 2D. (!)

NetherRealm Studios to release Mortal Kombat in March 2011

8:17 AM CST - Patrick McCarron

Earlier this morning, the WB Games' Chicago game studio was relaunched officially as NetherRealm Studios, just as was discovered last April. You can find their new logo and home over at www.netherrealm.com. The page is pretty basic right now but it has an awesome new logo which you can see below.

Along with the new studio name is the information that ninth Mortal Kombat game will be a reboot of the franchise. Basically they are rebooting the series to re-establish "the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style." Here is more on the game from WB's Press Release:

The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series’ mature presentation and a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite Fatality is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1 matches, or take on several new game modes.

The game will also feature some new gameplay features like Tag Team fighting, and all back in the familiar 2D style gameplay like the first three Mortal Kombat games. Not to mention what will likely be the most gruesome fatalities ever seen in a Mortal Kombat game.

“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”

Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game modes as well as the most extensive online experience ever seen in a fighting game. Up to 4 players can battle “tag-team”- 2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade Mode” or compete against another team online.

The game will be released in March 2011 for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 systems.

WB Games also launched TheMortalKombat.com as the new home to this new game. Currently it just links to the Facebook fan page but I expect that to change as E3 gets closer. The Mortal Kombat Facebook page has also posted a high resolution copy of the game's new logo. It's a whole new darker stone dragon logo, along with a flat red MORTAL KOMBAT type underneath it. This is the logo:

As cool as that short was I dont think I would like to see it as full feature length movie. I am very much a fan of the mythcial and magical side of the series.

As for the new game it looks like an update of the first two MK games. I guess they finally decided to move back to the 2D format and I have to say that I like it. Now heres hoping that they have totally reworked that annoying combo system they had.

The movie seen on Youtube was something the director made to show the studio a basic preview of what he thought he could come up with.

I don't think we can thoroughly judge how any final product would be.

The game looks great... I hope they use the Mk@2 Mk3 Jax and not the commando jax from the recent games...

What set MK from the other fighting games in the 90s is the use of sprites... can they apply that in a 3d setting? not just the motion capture or 3d rendered character if you know what i mean...

Wow, the game looks amazing. It's bringing back memories; if I could preorder it now, I would. I did not mind the 3D, but I preferred the 2D of the first three MKs better. I'm also glad that there are actually going to be fatalities this time as well. Armaggedon was a huge disappointment in that area.

I saw the trailer for the new game and I applaud it for going back to the basics, but I didn't see anything new... so few new characters, new arenas and I didn't particularly look "next-gen" to me. I am sure it'll be cleaned up and I am hoping that they add more to it... freshen it up, breathe new life into it.

IMO, I think that with a series like Mortal Kombat – a lack of new characters can be forgiven. You see a list of names comprised of Reiko, Motaro, Kai, Taven, Tanya, Jarek, etc next to a list of Liu Kang, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Mileena, Shang Tsung, etc – chances are you’ll choose one of the latter before you attempt playing as new or relatively “second rate/ filler” character. People know Scorpion, Jax, & Sonya’s moves, looks, and fatalities off the bat. I think it’d be best if they stuck to the more well-known characters and take the best elements from 1-3 (as far as selection goes) and mix it with new gen stuff.

Did any of you guys ever play the full body motion-capture mortal combat?

There were no controllers, just a large half-oval booth in front of you and a large pad to stand on. The big-screen showed your character, and in a booth beside you was your opponent. The mortal combat character only moved and did moves based on your physical actions. So, stepping forward made him move forward; kicking the air made him kick; punching, ditto. My opponent got pissed because I played SubZero and knew all his power-move actions by heart. I kept freezing the guy. I think I was about 16 or so, and he was much older and trying to show off to his girlfriend. Heh

Fun game. I only saw it displayed like that once.

For me, It's gotta be Jax (John Parrish)...

In some behind the scenes in the PSP version of MK, there was an interview of him, and boy he got fat... LOL

Johnny Cage is hot in the MK Trilogy Version when he was played by Chris Alexander

Agreed. The fact that this short film is trying to make the characters into everyday, relateable people with disorders (psychological and physiological) as opposed to mythical creatures from other dimensions makes it lose its magic for me. I'm already uninterested.

exactly. it will be a flop if it is like those 90s version today. 90s movies were campy and they get awy with lots of shit, but today not so. hell, even twilight is grounded in reality somewhat, and it's relatable.

The first MK film was not a flop and managed to stay pretty close to the games storyline. It had it's camp moments but it worked however the sequel was a travesty and a certified flop.

I'm loving the fatalities. After Armaggedon, we needed that upgrade back to MK normalcy as far as the gore factor is concerned.

im glad mileena is back she my fave so i guess that means as shes confirmed that means kitana is also in it there hasnt been a game yet to feature mileena without kitana only

MK: Deadly Alliance had Kitana sans Mileena and MK: Deception had Mileena sans Kitana.
