Not quite a "sporting moment" I suppose - but jumping up and down on the bed at around 3am when the announcement was made that Sydney had won the 2000 Olympics. Iremember being so hyped that I couldn't sleep - so got up and went for a 15k run :D

As for as real sporting moments...

As a spectator - possibly being at the stadium when Cathy Freeman survived all the pressure, hype and expectation to win her Olympic Gold.

As a competitor...well, I guess there are a couple that stand out:
My first Ironman Tri finish, and
Completing an ultra endurance race where the winner broke a world record.
 
The most memorable sporting moment for we was a downer. When the ball went through Buckner's legs in the 86 World Series. I can remember sitting on the floor thinking we are actually gonna win this thing, then disaster. I'll never forget that feeling.

1. White Sox winning he World Series (and Korerko's grand slam and Scotty Pod walk off home run in Game 2, which I was at - I was at four of th 6 home post season games)

2, Michigan defeating Washington State in 1998 Rose Bowl and winning national championship (best moments in season, watching UM rally to beat Iowa, the stomping of Penn State, beating OSU)

also Damian Oliver winning the Melbourne Cup on Media Puzzle a couple of weeks after his brother was killed in a race fall
 
Just recently, it was my hometeam Detroit Tigers defeating New York Yankees in the ALDS in the fourth game. Games 3 and 4 -- Tigers took the series 3-1 -- were exhilarating in their intensity and decisiveness.

But it's really stark on a number of counts: experts and shitloads of MLB followers were assuming Yanks would clean the clocks of the Tigs; Tigers' Game 3 and 4 pitchers, Kenny Rogers and Jeremy Bonderman, shut down "the best offense" in the AL, even MVP candidate Derek Jeter (Rogers got a 6-0 win; Bonderman's pitches were hitless into the sixth); but one thing that is also stunning: it was the last game ever pitched in the life of Cory Lidle, who replaced Yankees starting pitcher Jaret Wright in the third inning, and would die just four days later in a plane crash that landed in a New York City apartment building.

I'm not a follower of sports, regularly, but this year I have gotten into the Tigers' unbelievable 2006 comeback -- the team was the joke of the AL three years earlier (record 119 losses for a team in its league; the NL's Mets once suffered 120 defeats). So, congratulations to the Detroit Tigers which has so far won: the 2006 AL Wild Card; the 2006 AL Division Series (beating New York Yankees 3-1); and the 2006 AL Championship Series (against Oakland Athletics, 4-0). Now that is has the 2006 AL Pennant, the Detroit Tigers is in the World Series. The first time in 22 years!
 
Got to be Phillies 1980 World Series win, the 80 Olympic hockey win (anyone remember it was on tape delay for evening ABC broadcast and the stations were warning you ahead of their sports broadcasts they were going to announce the score?) and the 1981 NFC Championship game: Eagles 20, Dallas 7. Yo Cool Blue, rooted for your Tigers against Yanks (hate Yanks) and rooting for them to win it all...Been to Detroit a few times, the people are real cool (for some reason they really take to guys from Jersey?!?) and the town needs a emotional lift like this!
 
my favorite sports moment could have been when I was walking past the visiting team's locker room in Winnimac Stadium and somone opened the door and stood there a while, giving me a great shot of the Lane Tech High School football team in the shower. Most impressive, and very inspiring for a young sports fan.
 
1984 NHL Western Conference Finals - Calgary vs Edmonton game 6. Edmonton scored on their own net advancing Calgary to the semi-finals. Back in the 80s, Edmonton was a dynasty, and unseating the Oilers meant everything
 
Steffi Graff winning the Golden slam in 1988.

Steffi winning the French Open in 1999, abit bitter sweet because she was playing Martina Hingis. Queen vs Princess.

Michelle Kwan losing the gold medal in Nagano 1998 after skating 2 conservative yet perfect programs.
 
August 13, 1995. the day Mickey Mantle died. I was only 12 years old and I looked over at my dad when he heard the news on tv and i saw his bottom lip quivering. I wasn't really sure what that meant at the time and we never talked about it. But a few years back I brought it up in a casual conversation.

he explained to me that when he was growing up, it was every kids dream to play like the Mick. He was from a small town in Oklahoma and though they never met, my dad told me that he felt a connection as if him and the Mick had been best friends for years. I could still see the sadness in the old mans eyes as he talked about it.

August 13 1995, that's the day my heroes, hero died.

Last year, the Colorado Mammoth (indoor lacrosse team) managed to beat the Calgary Roughnecks twice at the end of the season to make it to the playoffs. Their first playoff game was at home against...the Calgary Roughnecks. Not surprisingly, the game sold out, so 18,000 fans were treated to the game of their lives. As it turned out, sitting in front of us was Missy Langtry, wife of Colorado Mammoth forward Brian Langtry. She was seven or eight months pregnant with their second child at the time, and we chatted with her a bit during the game.

The teams played their asses off, tying the score NINE times. Regulation ended with the score tied 13-13. As the players came of the bench to start overtime, we saw Brian yelling something at his teammates. (We didn't know it at the time, but it ends up he was yelling, "Look, we ARE going to win this game, damnit!") My b/f yelled, "Brian, win this game before you send your wife into labor." Missy turned around, laughed and said thank you.

Overtime wasn't long, but even that was full of great shots and amazing saves by both goalies. Brian Langtry ended up with the ball and took a screaming shot at goal, which the Calgary goalie managed to deflect downwards. It hit the ground, and then slowly began creeping backwards. Defenders leapt towards it, but it was too late. The ball rolled into the goal.

Brian Langtry ripped off his helmet and ran screaming across the field. He reached the glass in front of our section and began screaming, "I love you Missy!" as his teammates piled around and on top of him. Missy screamed, "I love you Brian!" and began crying. We offered her hugs, which she accepted gladly, and began crying too.

That's gonna be really hard to top.
