Most OVERRATED Music Legends

I don't get what's so great about Cher. She doesn't even have a good singing voice.

britney spears, not a legend but horribly overrated

I see that my inclusion of Diana Ross has upset quite a few here and I knew that would happen. I still stand by my opinion that her voice is just decent not great IMO and that she got very lucky with being able to advance in her career due to her relationship with the boss at Motown Records.

Someone also mentioned Aretha Franklin, which I did also but as an example to compare to Diana Ross voice-wise but in all honesty I also think she's highly overrated and I don't see charisma in Aretha at all, just a lot of uptightness and I find her extremely annoying and unlikable and she doesn't speak very articulately in interviews at all. I will give Diana Ross over Aretha in the charisma and being more articulate categories.

Most of you are wrong.

But any who think Streisand is OVERRATED is on my side.

i can see how people might find the beatles boring nowadays, given that about 50% of all contemporary music and 100% of all contemporary rock music is based on their groundbreaking work. 'archetypical' sometimes appears to be close to 'bland'.

however, i cannot see how people would think they are overrated, because see reason above.

also, i have to leave this thread now, otherwise i go crazy with music-nerd-rage.

I don't know if they are considered Legends in the U.S.A. yet but I can't take the huge success and amount of nr.1s of (let's make enemies: )

Mariah Carey: I can't stand a single note from her

Paula Abdul: what do you see that I don't

Janet Jackson: following the comet's tail of a Real Legend,

btw Diana Ross is Supreme. Decadent now but prodigious in the 60s

DONT EVAR talk about miss janet!!! hahaha j/k but i disagree to the billionth degree, good day sir

The beatles, the beatles, the beatles, the beatles, Oasis (beatles cover band, essentialy,) My Chemical Toilet, Pink Floyde, and the beatles. Just for emphasis.

Holy cow mate... Well to each his own I suppose..
But lordy man.. I cannot figure how anyone can say (with a straight face) that the Beatles are/were overrated..
The second side of Abbey Road alone is worth more than most rock/pop albums that were done during that time..
And hell, listen to the Harrison song.. While My Guitar Gently Weeps.... George Harrison only had a songs that were published.. but that is one of the best songes ever recorded..
Nowhere Man... sung by Lennon... it's got lyrics that are so very well written, like a poem written with great music besides.

The list goes on and on man..
but it's always good to read an opinion that differs from my own.

I don't do the "overrated" thing. I simply don't "get" certain artists that other people do. If we're talking music fiends rather than just pop icons, my main one is Van Morrison. I guess I can vaguely, objectively understand why some people like Van Morrison, but after being subjected to pretty much his entire recorded output (I have some pretty insistent friends), I can say I like the song "Moondance" OK. And his work with Them wasn't bad. But there's nothing else in his playbook that I think I'd ever want to pull out and play.

To go deeper, I simply don't get Pavement. They come across as a band that probably has a lot of chops and could play extremely well...and deliberately didn't, presumably because they were too cool to, or they were making some sort of "statement" by not doing so. And music geeks seem to think the band is brilliant because of this. Sorry - I just hear a bunch of guys who sound like they hate their job.

Re: Diana Ross. To me, she's somewhat the epitome of diva. Simply BECAUSE she doesn't have that wonderful a voice. But she commanded so much attention from Berry Gordy (and others) that she more or less MADE them make her a star, by writing/producing/recording songs that highlighted her modest talents and covered her inadequacies. It takes some sort of personality to basically say "I know I'm not that great, but you WILL put all your time and energy into making me a huge star."
