Nirvana, the Beatles, The Who, The BeeGees, Kiss, AC/DC, U2, Jay-Z, Eminem and now I have to say Lady GaGa. She may be too young to be considered a legend, but come it's looking like she will be. Would anyone know who the fuck she is if she didn't dress crazy and basically be Madonna all over again? Music is going to shit, but the other people I mentioned came out when music was still good so I have no clue how some of them ever got famous.

One of the greatest pop singers of all time. Ridiculous to compare her with Aretha or Tina, who were a completely different kind of singer. (The hugely overrated Janis Joplin doesn't even belong in this discussion.) Diana had a sweet, seductive, light voice, perfect for the unprecedented string of hits the Motown team wrote for her. Her backup singers were good, too, but it ain't that difficult to find good backup singers...

My favorite music is opera and classical, but I also love jazz. I couldn't disagree with you more about Janis Joplin. When it comes to popular music and rock, she's one of the best.

Michael Jackson
Elvis Presley
Whitney Houston

The Best Are:

Britney Spears
Christina Aguilera

Being a classical maven, I'd say they all are. How much of their music will be played and enjoyed, and retain its freshness, 100, 200, 500 years from now?

How much of any artist's works fit that category, though? Not everyone likes Classical music and many would consider the likes of Beethoven and Bach to be overrated these days.

^ Puts on pompous hat, gets on high horse: Yes, but they're wrong, and I'm right!

Gets off high horse, takes off pompous hat, slinks back under rock.

let me put on my flame suit real quick... ;)

I'd have to say Madonna.

don't get me wrong, I love Madge. I probably listen to the Ray of Light album at least once/month... but her success in the music industry has absolutely nothing to do music. in terms of singing, she's mediocre at best. her real skills are in managing the business of Herself.

While watching Evita, a friend had this to say about Madonna, "She could die in tune."

In concert Janis ROCKED the roof off buildings in a Fit or Passion....If she were alive today I know I would have seen her in Concert about 50 times..She paved the way for Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette, Sinéad O'Connor & Joan Osborne.....

Bette Midler's portrayal of Janis in "The Rose" was a Cinematic-performance for the Books...Beyond Oscar worthy...She got cheated that year..

Was that your rock?

I hate to say this, but you might not be drinking tea..... I believe it was your rock on which I relieved myself. My bladder was just a bit full. :p

-whitney houston ( how to make a 3 minute song into a 15 minute train-wreck)
-pink floyd ( maybe need to stop smoking weed if you dig it..)
-bob marley ( i'm just sick of it)
- the beatles (boy bands need to DIE not been taking serious after 25 years)

there's an entire thread to prove you right.

Coming from a hardcore Beatle's fan, I am in absolute shock by how many people said they were overrated!? Difference of opinions i guess... just don't understand it, but oh well. Now, there is one more thing i have to say, THE BEATLE'S ROCK!!! :P haha, i'm done.

First, call her MISS Ross!

Secondly, Elvis and the Beatles changed music forever. Who else can you seriously say that about?

Third, making one -syllable words into five does not a singer make. (I'm talking to you, Mariah)

As far as over-rated, two names head my list. Aretha Franklin is the most over-rated performer ever. I remember her taking the beautiful "I Dreamed A Dream" at Clinton's inauguration and turning into one of her screeching abominations. In a different vein (but just as over-rated) is Bruce Springsteen. Yes , he is a dynamic live performer, but most of his songs sound like funeral dirges.

Could not agree more!

Yes to Aretha and Bruce being totally overrated.

Bob Dylan.
The Beatles
The RollingStones
Van Morrison
Sinead O'Connor
Neal Young
U2

these are the ones I can think of right now. I'm sure I will come up with more.

Steven.

The first answer to come to mind is U2 for me. They're just so bland. :help: And they've influenced newer generations of bland rock like Kings of Leon.
