My 6 Year Old Nephew Called Me A Fag...

Not offended, you big queer, W10 Chubb...

I would talk to both the siblings. Teaching hate at an early stage is not what we need as a society. Whether it be fag, dyke, or any of the million other slanderous names we call one another...this is the next generation. I would tell them how it made you feel knowing that it came from his parents-your sibling. I know it hurts. I have been there too.

Thanks guys for all the input...

I'm too angry right now to do anything, I'm still in the "what can I do to get even" state of mind. I do not think that involving Jed (my nephew) in any way is a smart move. I love my sister and my relationship with Jeb is great...I'm his favorite Unc as he puts it.

What surprises me most, is I have always had what I thought was an awesome relationship with my brother-inlaw..we hang, we watch games..we play softball we do lots of things together. He needs to get his head out of his ass, not for my sake, but for his son...think what that kind of impressions and thought patterns this child is learning...

Thanks for listening..

This is what i'm thinking - the guy was using it as slang, not as an intentionally hostile description - people do it every day with many cultures and nationalities - not even realizing it may be offensive - but nevertheless, its not a good example for the kid who obviously loves his gay uncle and has no prejudice of his own. Talk to the guy.

B and C, and I would go much further:
I would beat the shit out of him, like I did to my nephews when they called me fag.
They never did that again, and they treat me so nice now.
Yes, I am very bad. Don´t fuck with me.

Am I the only one that doesn't find the word fag offensive?
You're all a bunch of filthy dirty faggots - are you really that offended by that?

Wow, how low does your self esteem have to be that you would NOT be offended if someone called you a "filthy dirty faggot"?

As for the nephew, talk to your sister and let her know what kind of language her husband is teaching their child. She may be unaware.

I had a similar situation happen to me and I talked to my sister. My sister and I are very close, so I was sure the problem didn't come from her. Anyway, she "straightened" out both my nephew and her husband real fast. No more problems after that. ;)

And people say the baddest things about Chavs....

Yes. The offensiveness of the word 'faggot' depends on who says it and in what context, but the phrase 'filty dirty faggot' will make me mad.

Me too.

Unless i'm tied to the headboard face down and gagged - then it's just fun.

so why is gay ok then?

what makes that word more acceptable than faggot ?

and at least he didn't call you a battyboy - although if he had he would have had serious street cred for a six year old !

In my context i think

Is it with a raised voice? You have to talk a little louder...with this ball gag in my mouth and the blindfold on my eyes...I am having trouble seeing the expression on your face when you are talking to me!

All I can tell you is what I would do. I would immediately go to my sister and her idiot husband and ask them point blank if that is the way you are referred to when you're not around. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your brother in law but if it is nice when you're face to face then he is the ultimate two faced bigot who should be confronted. This is the perfect time someone like him should be made aware of just how big of an ass he is. The fact that he would refer to you in that way in front of his child shows that he is a homophobic bigot. You can not let this go unchallenged.

And when it ends in a furios row in which you both say things you regret - you can come back to the forum and ask us how you repair your relationship with your sister her husband and their child!

Hmmm...

I think I'll try and throw a different perspective into this stream of outrage.

You say you have a good relationship with your sis and bro in law - you "hang out, are friendly etc.

Do they have any other contact with gay people/society etc other than yourselves? Is it possible that they (because they have heard the word used often in their circles) are genuinely using "fag" as a description with no realisation of the fact that you would find it hurtful or offensive?

You did say that your nephew said he (bro in law) "called you that all the time" - but there was no mention of the manner in which he used it. Do you know if it was just an (admittedly ill informed) "matter of fact" description - or whether it was actually used with derision?

I think you should try and keep your anger in check, and ask them in a reasoned way, explaining your feelings - that way, you are at least more likely to have a constructive conversation that could yield results, rather than something that could easily turn into an out of control shouting match...that could burn bridges and destroy the relationship you enjoy with your nephew.

Just my 2c.

I don't know how I'd handle the situation--- but I do know this is the most disheartening post I've seen in a while. :(

The Free Online Dictionary even says:

fag (f

g)

n. Offensive Slang Used as a disparaging term for a homosexual man

Get it? Disparaging! Offensive!

People using this word are usually trying to slam you, put you down. They WANT it to be offensive. That's why the brother-in-law says it because it expresses how he feels about Gay people.

gay (g
amacr.gif
) adj. gay·er, gay·est 1. Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to persons of the same sex

See, that's Neutral. Just an identifying word.

D) punch the brother in law's light's out.

ok.. you can't do that.

But I'd call your sister and tell her what he told you and that you would have expected more from her than you allow her husband to teach him such words and attitudes.

I'd also tell the kid that "Fag" is a very mean word to call someone who is married to someone of the same sex and that no matter who uses the word, he never should.

Sometimes you have to do a little parenting for people who are incapable of doing it themselves.

By the way, just so we're totally clear on this...

There IS NO WAY that a straight person can use the term "fag" about a gay person who is not there and NOT have it be offensive.

Gay men can call each other that to each other's faces. Straight people cannot call gay men that when they're not there.

The same way that Chris Tucker can call Chris Rock "My Nigger" and it's cool but Jackie Chan would get his ass kicked (and rightfully so).
