  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

My life is about to change . . . big time

Very nice and a balcony. It is always nice to have an outside sitting area.

Thank you Dominus. It would be years here also.

I was getting quotes of $500 for moving. I found a guy who charges $120 an hour. It will probably take 2 hours.

My phone company (which provides phone, tv, internet) says they cant send out a technician to connect the service until December 13th. I said that was unacceptable and I said I would go to their competition. They gave me a $100 credit so I would stay. So I may be away for awhile.

Ive loaded up my dvr with programs. And if I run out, I have HVS tapes I can watch. I recorded shows like Seinfeld, Melrose Place, Golden Girls.

I showed my sister the "Your sister is a Saint" comment. She thanked me for showing it to her.

I am happy for you that you found a place and don't have that stress to worry about. Let us know how the move went and if the mover's invoice / bill was reasonable for what they quoted.

As a side note, I don't think I've lived in a place that DIDN'T have carpet for nearly the entire place. My home now (which I have owned for over 30 years) has carpet everywhere. Before this place I lived in a mobilehome that I purchased new and it had carpet except for bathroom and kitchen/dinning area. I know it is the modern "thing" now to have wood-look floors...and I do like the looks. But winters can here get below freezing nearly every night and carpet, to me, just seems like it would be warmer for your feet.

I moved Nov 29th. I didnt have tv / phone / internet until today. The mover broke Spike's cat tree but I have bought him another one. He said it was already broken but if you were a mover, wouldnt you tell the owner "this is broken. I dont want you to think it was broken during the move".

Spike is happy with a new place to run around in.

I'm glad to hear that's all sorted. How's the job hunting going?

Glad to hear that you are settling in.

Im not quite there yet regarding looking for work. I have 2 employment people looking for work when I tell them I am ready.
Obviously, this is a big relief because I would have been homeless if my sister (bless her) wasn't helping me but it doesnt feel good, but I am VERY grateful that she has helped me but I do want to be self reliant.
At the risk of exposing myself, I have been more reliant on alcohol because it helps with the anxiety. I woke up at 1:15 a.m. and I awake at 5:30 a.m. and I drink to get back to sleep. Its not a good situation but I cant get sleeping medication. Skier Lindsay Vohn endorses an insomnia medication (QUVIVIQ) that isnt available in Canada. Whats with Canada? No xanax for anxiety; no insomnia medication.
But having a new place is sooooooo releaving. (sp)
I felt a bit judged on the board and I left but I hope guys will understand we all have crosses to bear but thankfully, I have a new home. My place was such a dump. I cant believe I lived there for 28 years.

You aren't drinking to help you sleep. You are drinking to pass out.

And that isn't a judgement. It is just the way things are.

Now that you are settled in a safe place, you need to have the hard conversations with your family doctor and a an addictions counsellor in the new year. Because until this is sorted, you will not be able to consider the responsibility of a job. Ask your sister to help you do this.

Yes, you are right. I pass out. It's not a good thing. I dont enjoy drinking. I do it because otherwise I could be awake for three days

Rareboy,
Although I agreed with you about 'passing out', would you just leave me alone. I am tired of you coming after me and I have thought of leaving the board several times because of you. Go away!!!!

And no, this isnt a drunken rant. I'm fed up with you.

Insomnia fucking sucks and I dont need you telling me Im passed out

Have a little more compassion. If you come after me again, I will be gone. There are other message boards I can join.

Substance-induced[edit]

Alcohol-induced[edit]

Main article: Alcohol use and sleep
Alcohol is often used as a form of self-treatment of insomnia to induce sleep. However, alcohol use to induce sleep can be a cause of insomnia. Long-term use of alcohol is associated with a decrease in NREM stage 3 and 4 sleep as well as suppression of REM sleep and REM sleep fragmentation. Frequent moving between sleep stages occurs, with awakenings due to headaches, the need to urinate, dehydration, and excessive sweating. Glutamine rebound also plays a role as when someone is drinking; alcohol inhibits glutamine, one of the body's natural stimulants. When the person stops drinking, the body tries to make up for lost time by producing more glutamine than it needs. The increase in glutamine levels stimulates the brain while the drinker is trying to sleep, keeping him/her from reaching the deepest levels of sleep.[46] Stopping chronic alcohol use can also lead to severe insomnia with vivid dreams. During withdrawal REM sleep is typically exaggerated as part of a rebound effect.[47]

So, recently, my boyfriend told me an observation of his. He said when we go to bed, I could be talking and then 1 second later I'm snoring. In other words, it's very easy for me to fall asleep. While laughing, I told him every one I've ever dated had told me the same thing.

Then I told him I used to have bad insomnia. Like really bad. I'd just lay there in bed all night staring at the ceiling and then before I know it it's morning time.

Many years ago, I set out to solve my insomnia. I actually went to the library and looked up books on how to sleep better. It's been so long (many years) so I don't remember the specific books. But I remember reading and reading and reading these books and took mental notes of what the suggestions were.

For example, one of the suggestions was to mentally and physically wind down in the hours leading to bedtime. Another was to control your breathing.

Here's the thing. Any single one of these tricks will not work on its own. It's a combination of all these things.

I actually followed these suggestions and I've been getting the best sleep ever since. Here are some things that I've noticed about having a good night sleep. Just off the top of my head.

-I wake up refreshed early in the morning.
-Even if I get waken up several times throughout the night, it's ok. I just look around and then fall right back asleep.
-I never feel sleepy during the day.

Look, I'm not judging you. It's your life. All I'm saying is there are a lot of information out there. Don't just read about them. Actually follow through. A good night sleep is irreplaceable.

I have a different approach. The radio near my bed is tuned to BBC Radio 4. During the night that broadcasts the BBC World Service. If I can't sleep, I turn it on and set the 30 minute timer. The World Service is so tediously boring whatever the subject that it sends me back to sleep every time.

Thank you Dominus and Unloadonme for your input. I appreciate it very much. I haven't done research into insomnia because I just thought there wouldnt be any answers but I should probably look. I know about having a 'clean environment' where you sleep. Not looking at blue screens an hour before sleeping, etc.

Lindsay Vohn talks about her insomnia (I'll check it out later).
