This is one of my many attempts at quitting. The longest I lasted was four days. Is that pathetic? I've been a smoker for about 7 years now. At one point I smoked a pack a day. Most recently I'd smoke about 5-10 cigs a day.

It's been two days now that I've gone without a cig and I've crazed one on a few occasions. I don't have any in the house but if I did I can't help but wonder if I would have given in and smoked.

My biggest times when I craze one is after a meal. I've read that food is supposed to taste better after your second day of quitting smoking.

I will post in this as often as I can and if I smoke I'll let it be known here but I will try my hardest not to have one. If anyone wants to share their stories or give advice, feel free. ..|

Good for you.

The trick for you will be figuring out whether it's the nicotine that triggers your craving or whether it's the habit patter (e.g. smoking after a meal)- or both.

I quit almost two years ago to the day. Best thing I've done in a while. I feel much better. I was 10 cig a day smoker and used the patch. It really wasn't bad at all with the patch. If you've made up your mind to quit, then stick with it. Good luck!

i'm telling you it's just the WORST!!! i'd been doing pretty good--i went 26 days from New Year's. then i fell off the wagon HARD...i've been going through a pack a day for the last week. it's fuckin rough, but i do plan to be smoke free by my birthday. gives me just under 6 months.

Well it's been three days now and I haven't had one. I got over the three day hump and the cravings haven't been that bad yet but I haven't been around cigarettes for those days. I wonder how bad the cravings will get when I'm around people who smoke.

sultan, getting past 3 days is the hardest phase, just don't keep any cigarettes in the house and for about a month stay away from smokers if you can. i stopped about 11 months ago and it was much easier than the non-smoking ads want you to believe. i dipped toothpicks in peppermint for something to do with my hands and drank ice tea. i was a hard core smoker for years, i didn't think i could quit but now i hardly think about smoking and no withdraw fillings since the 1st week i stopped. good luck

Hey, we are all still tryin to work hard at it. I'll admit, i've slipped up many a time since my first post about tryin to quit, but just stick with it...you'll make it

After three days the nicotine is out of your system so now it's the HABIT you have to fight.
I have a little over a year in.
Telling the world about it for added incentive to STAY quit can't HURT!....... ;)
Good luck! And think of the money you're saving....... ..|

I've heard some reports say three days and others say 6 months for the nicotine to completely exit your system. I'm not sure which to believe.

The research says that the psychological effects of nicotine withdrawal peaks within the first 48 hours. Other problems like sleeping difficulty, resolve in the first 72 hours. All other withdrawal symptoms abate in the first week.

The challenge now is to watch for things that trigger the habit pattern. Do you smoke when you drink? Do you smoke after sex? Do you smoke when you drink coffee? Breaking those patterns can be more difficult and take a little longer.

Well I'm finishing my 4rth day without a cigarette. I haven't had bad cravings all day, even when I was around my cousin who was smoking a cigarette but just now, when I was alone in my room I started craving one badly. I chewed gum but I still feel a craving to smoke a little. I wonder if I would have if I had one. :(

Well anyway I'm glad I made it this far.

It's now been 5 days. Last night I had a beer and my friend was smoking in front of me so I was tempted. I also had a dream where I was at some sports even or something and EVERYONE was smoking and blowing smoke everywhere. Weird.

There's your habit-pattern. Your habit is connected to both socializing and drinking which is not usual.

Maybe some of the other smokers can give you suggestions on how they broke this connection or substituted another behavior for the smoking.

Congrats on your 5th day.

Why is week three the hardest? I thought the term was "three day hump" not "three week hump".

Today I had a beer and the biggest craving hit when I drove to the gas station to get my dad some beer. I was SOOO close to buying a pack but I didn't. I wanted one so bad though. Where did this come from??

Did you usually buy your cigs at a gas station?

My dad wanted me to have a beer with him and I did and I drank over the weekend too but I'm gonna stop now because I'm afraid I might smoke if I keep it up.

It's now been a week since I've had a cigarette. Can't believe I've lasted this long.

Holy shit dude...
I'm so proud of you.... man you are doing great!!!!!!!!!!!! And I don't write this lightly..... it's damned tough what you are trying to do man..

And I've heard about the three day deal too.... but I found it to be as tough after three weeks as after three days.

Seems that alcohol does creat a desire to smoke.... so maybe you could stay from that beer for a couple more weeks.

A buddy of mine used shelled sunflower seeds to help him quit. It gave him something to do with his hands....you know having to bit the shell then take the seeds out with his hand.... did it after dinner while watching tv.
Just something to occupy his hands.

You've gone one week so far man... you can do it, I know you can. Just one or two more weeks and you will have it made.

You have a great will to do this my friend, I can sense it.
My best to you.
You write me a pm if you have the desire to light up again.... I'm not always on here so not sure if that will help too much.... but if I'm on and read it well then we can work through it.
later...
:D:=D::=D::=D:

Do you know around how long it will take to go back to normal?

It's been a week and a half now and still going strong. :) I did have some serious cravings the other day though because I had a really intense conversation with someone about them considering suicide. I feel better now though and haven't smoked.

Thanks man I really appreciate all the insight you've given me.

I never had a smokers cough thankfully. I defenitely feel that my breathing is better and my sinuses aren't as closed as they used to be. Even when I was smoking I would exercise at the gym on and off but now I've noticed that I can run or use the elliptical easier without getting out of breath as easily. I can go at it and not feel dead after going a mile or so. It's a good feeling. Only thing is my knee is injured so I can't do cardio as much as I should.

As for taste, I def notice a difference. When I was smoking my sense of taste was quite weak compared to how it is now. My appetite is also bigger which isn't necessarily a bad thing because before I was skipping meals and now I've put on a few pounds and I feel healthier. Though I always had a small gut and now it will probably get worse but I don't care as much. I like that I'm eating more. :)

All in all it's been a great feeling. I especially like the encouragement and congrats people give me when I tell them because even though it's just a week n a half, it's a big deal to me. I feel like that since I went this long I can keep it up for as long as I want and it's good to know that cigarettes don't control me as much as they used to.

When I was a smoker and I was desperate for one and if I didn't have any and the cravings were strong enough I would even go as far as to light up a disposed cigarette butt that had been disposed in my ashtray from days before and smoke the last remaining portion of nicotine in it, which is so disgusting if you think about it. The addiction made me a slave to the nicotine.

I'm so glad I made the decision to stop and logging my progress in this thread has really helped. ..| ..| ..|
