  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

My sister got robbed in Europe !!!

Even on the train in Boston, when I used to ride it daily, I guarded my wallet with my life as I have had a few friends lose theirs when you're crammed like a sardine. Some of my friends still carry their SS and debit cards in their wallet which are the two stupidest things to have in there at all times

All I can say is that I hope she is more responsible with her belongings going forward and chalks this up as a lesson learned in life.

Everyone here carry cash and credit cards in their wallets.
I do the same but i put it in the front pocket near the groin area where it is tight. Is it safe enough?

In Italy to be exact.

The robbers work in term, inside a bus. Sister and her husband was distracted by a few old men. Those old men pretend to be very helpful and chatty to them, suddenly the next stop, she noticed the money ($1000 Australia dollars) and credit cards were gone and her hand bag was unzipped.

So some parts of Europe is no good !!!

Why the fuck would she be carrying ASD$1,000 around? How stupid.

I've been in Italy 5 times, for a total of nearly 3 months, and have never, ever, had a problem. Sounds like she stuck out like a sore thumb, banged by a hammer, as a tourist.

When I travel overseas I do 3 different carry methods for valuables. 1 special wallet that holds passport, important documents, other ID which hangs around my neck under my shirt. Then I store credit cards separately in a RFID Protected wallet and store cash in a "thief proof" security pack from PacSafe which is designed to be slash proof and zippers make it harder to open. http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/catalog/venturesafe-cross-body-security-p-1213.html

woo, nice design.
Never thought of this. :)

I never traveled before :(
So you don't use cash there ? only bank cards ?

LMAO! The various urban legends posted about supposed European pickpockets on forums to this day is hilarious. If I had a $1 for every time I've seen someone claim a woman (usually Gypsy) threw a baby at them or similar I'd be retired. Remember Jubbers, if a "Gypsy" in Europe throws a baby at you SMACK IT DOWN!!

What utter bollocks.

And yes Telstra, you use a bank card or a credit card when traveling in Italy. You know, just like you do at home in Oz. In fact ATMs are even more prolific in Italy than they are in Oz from my experience. There's no need to carry more than $100 or so in cash in most European cities.

I must use bank card more.
I still use the old fashion way most of the time, cash.
Bank card i only use for large purchases such as afew thousand dollars.

For overseas, not sure if they charge a fee every time you use the card.

A friend of mine was robbed in the train in Paris - the robbers look like gypsies and worked in tandem according to her.

It could happen anywhere, probably more so in big cities where the targets are unsuspecting tourists.

In UK now most people use a card for any purchase over a few £s. I use a card for any purchase over £10 and rarely have more than £30 in my wallet. I prefer to use a Debit card to avoid the risk of incurring any charges.
Back to the original Topic regarding pickpockets in Europe. I am afraid it is very common in most of the large cities in Europe particularly in the crowded buses and underground trains. A friend of mine had her phone taken from her zipped bag when travelling next to be on a crowded Metro train in Paris. Keep things in your pockets to be safe !

Usually, if you have a decent bank as well as a large bank credit card it's far cheaper to use the ATM and credit card as their foreign monetary exchange rate is far superior to the local money changer. Not to mention the awful loss you can have when carrying ASD$1,000. Spending an extra $10 or $20 for a month long holiday on ATM fees is far superior to being robbed.

Surely everyone knows to watch out for pickpocketers in Europe. It can happen anywhere really

you know you never think you will get robbed till it happens and you realize how stupid you were.

Yeah, when my friend and my dad and I were in Rome, my friend had this lady walk up to him with a baby in her arms and she virtually pushed the poor thing into his chest, so as to distract him while her other hand was reaching for his pocket. Crafty.

And then later on in the subway my dad had another woman try and pilfer cash from his jacket pocket. The rest of the Italians on the train gave her some very dirty looks.

As for myself, I escaped getting thieved on by women, and the only little trick played on me was from this good-looking hot dude who started making me a wristband on my arm. I didn't object. When he was finished and it was tied tight so I couldn't remove it, he asked for some money. I gave him some. #-o

I'm a sucker for a nice guy. :o

Gypsies usually use babies to rob you. They might throw a fake baby into the air and people are all like OMG and run there while other Gypsies take their belongings. They love making their children appear sick and then beg for money because people will feel bad for a poor looking hungry child with a broken arm or leg.

Gypsies are known for being robbers sweetie. Especially in Eastern Europe where Gypsies have been living for centuries. Any Slavic country you go to most of the robberies are done by Gypsies. Their babies are used especially to get money...they're fucking annoying.

Sexualdemons, Americans—especially American leftists—have this idea that Europe is a safe-haven from crime.

Most don't realize that property crime rates, especially from pickpockets, rank significantly higher in Europe than in America, so American tourists underappreciate the danger and act carelessly.

Europeans hold a lot of misconceptions about the United States, too. Most seem to think that the US is a hotbed of crime, everybody carries guns, and the US is a war-zone in the cities.

This idea is true in the inner cities, but over a very wide swath of the United States, we feel so safe that many people don't bother to lock their windows and doors. This is true even near the biggest cities, at least in the suburbs.

actually, that's what the europeans want americans to think especially the british. us americans really don't care about our overseas cousins. it's really annoying like europe is supposed to be any safer or for that matter better than the united states. PLEASE. tell ross kemp and that louis theroux to focus on their country instead of ours where they constantly feel the need to make docs like we're animals in a zoo exhibit that need to be civilized. you english people are more crazier than us if you ask me at least when i went there. ya really don't give a fuck. crazy appears to be the norm for you guys. what is frowned down over here is normal over there. smh.
