Okay, so....

I have been doing cardio for a very long time now, for at least 4 years. I started off with just the treadmill for an hour a day and moved to the elliptical for an hour a day. I also started strength training last summer (I think). I don't know whats going on with my body, but it is not responding to the working out like it used to. I am only 20 years old, if that matters. I don't know if there is something wrong with my diet or if I need to step up the working out, please help!

I'm not expert, but it may be that you've conditioned your body because you've been doing the same exercises for so long. Maybe you should try mixing it up a little bit?

Are you getting plenty of vitamins, minerals and protein?
You might try combining the two workouts for a while. Add a little jump rope. Play some basketball or soccer. Are you walking or running on the treadmill?

I think the point is to work the same muscles and keep you active, but in a different way. If you've been walking for 1 hour for the past year, chances are you've built up a tolerance and need to push yourself further. I'm guessing this is the same thing. Are there any personal trainers at the gym?

I think you need to seek the advice of a personal trainer. I am beginning to work with one myself. It is really hard to know what to do on your own. Personal trainers spend years studying all the ins and out of resistance training, diet, cardio, etc. The fact that you feel you're not getting results probably means you need to consult a personal trainer.

You definitely need to stip it up or change it up a bit. Your body has become accustomed to your normal routine and has planned accordingly to maximize the amount of energy to store as fat. Either cut your caloric intake or change your work out routine. Use higher wieghts, more intense cardio, or longer cardio.

What's your normal workout like?

Most people consider workouts to be made of only two parts: (1) eating and (2) exercise. I think there is a third component that most people need: structure and support.

Most people hit the plateau because they do not mix up their workouts; this makes sense since we all feel comfortable with a habit, right.

Check out two things that might be helpful: (a) P90X workout (it uses muscle confusion principles that will help you prevent plateau and (b) look up realjock.com for a community of fitness fanatics who will help support your overall fitness lifestyle. There is a mountain of workout and diet advice over there.

I do the elliptical for an hour which averages into 6-7 miles and burns between 1200-1300 calories. I do weights three times a week,
