Netflix spawns Qwikster

Got this email today because I canceled before the price went up. IMO they should have sent this out WAY before the price went up as some sort of explanation. Instead, they seemingly raise the price with no rhyme or reason. If I was to ever go back, it would be if they added games in addition to the movies and the price wasn't outrageous. The instant streaming thing has always been terrible and unless they considerably upgraded it, or went back to having it for free, I won't ever do that again. There is no point with things like Hulu and even that Amazon Prime.(I think that's what it's called.

Instant Streaming was horrible. Bad movies and tv shows. I just switched to DVD only. I agree that they way Netflix went about this was just dumb. If you want to charge more for streaming, you better have quality products.

This way, they get to add a fee for an additional service which used to be included in one lower fee for both services.

Just wait until USPS goes under and they have to use UPS or FedEx to deliver the discs if you want to see a huge price increase.

CNN reported that they lost about 600k customers over this.

I guess the remaining customers will be making up the difference for the lost revenue.

Great job, guys. ..|

Instant Streaming was horrible.
I only stream videos that suck.

I've never used Netflix, because it's not available for Linux.

Evidently, they've just implemented some kind of massive, massive price increase that has PO'd everyone.

According to Wikipedia, 600k customers would only be about 6% of Netflix's users. If the price increase was more than 6% (which it sounds as if it was), then the company will make a lot of money off this change, despite the slight decline in the customer base.

There's one movie in in my list that isn't available in DVD. After I watch it, I'll switch to DVDs only.

Wouldn't it be funny if they sold Qwikster, then Netflix had to fold from lack of customers?

I watched Torchwood from Netflix's live stream of Starz. It seems like it overloaded their system. Lots of freezes. I don't think it was my internet, 'cause I haven't any problem watching video anywhere else.

The iPhone apps's quality was truly really good. And having many movies on my phone was awesome. But the selection wasn't that great. I just need DirecTV to get with the program and release and App to compete with Dish Network's current Live TV app. =\

I just checked netflix.ca

It's still promoting $7.99 per month with a 1-month free trial.

The video streaming is horrible and nothing is available.

Midnight hasn't popped back in so does anyone know if Amazon is worth a shot?

I would like to think that Netflixs would be getting into a deeper market of available streamed movies because disk are headed for the grave yard in the next ten years.

But I doubt they are that smart based on this move that alienated their customers.

Cool that is what I was looking for and what I suspected...

Hollywood hasnt thoroughly gotten behind the stream idea...

VuDu is good but they have a 24 hour watching limit on the movies. If I can rent a movie on disk for 3 days or unlimited in most cases then I should be able to watch it longer than 24 hours. I fall asleep when watching a flick because I usually choose to do so very late at night. SO i need a bit of time sometimes to finish a movie...

They need to have longer times for certain flicks and I would probably watch more.

You work for them, don't you. :p

I completely agree. I had it for the trial period but cancelled. No HD. No 5.1. It's 2011!! DVDs are so yesterday!!!

Our broadband infrastructure can't handle everyone streaming everything on the internet. It's not there yet. Heck, YouTube can't even handle streaming short videos with its millions of users. So no way Netflix can handle streaming full length movies with millions of users without lowering the quality, which they do with compression.

I here ya but it is rapidly getting there. They should be in front of the changes not behind them. Most major markets i have been in over the last four years have had no issues streaming... Memphis, Hampton Roads, Cincinnati, San Diego and now KC.... I think they are missing their mark. The products and BW are getting into more peoples hands everyday and it isn't gonna return to a destructible medium.

I honestly don't think the instant streaming is really all that horrible.

Is it great? No.

But I've definitely seen some things that I had wanted to for a long while through the service.

The Qwikster idea seems a bit strange, but we'll see what happens.

And by the way -- Hulu+ has great TV shows. The movies, not so much, EXCEPT -- they have the entire Criterion collection! 600+ masterpieces of foreign and independent film. Especially strong in Japanese film.

I can't believe nobody is gagging at the horrible choice of name! WTF is Qwikster? A gadget for premature ejaculation? A digital aid for whacking out a quick one?!!! I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE that name. It's just terrible!

Wow

We have no such issues in the 3rd World.

Streaming? Whole movies, with our slow networks and the astronomical cost of data, bundled or otherwise? You must be joking.

Somebody at Qwikster should have done their homework:

A pot-smoking, foul-mouthed tweeter has gained online celebrity status thanks to a rebranding effort on the part of Netflix. All this just one day after CEO Reed Hastings publicly apologizes.

<snip>

The correlating Twitter account to the newly named service @Qwikster belongs to a pot-smoking individual named Jason Castillo. Fond of swearing (and in desperate need of spell checking), he fills followers in on his daily life of working out, girls, food (or lack thereof), and playing Original Gangstaz on his iPhone.
