I moved to NY on my own. But, I wanted to say that Cape May is one of the most beautiful places on the Eastern Seaboard. Been there many, many times! And the Cape May Ferry to DE is the best, but Jersey has better beaches!
I've been around NJ a bit and it is true that if all you see of it is from 95 well, you don't see much. The burbs to the north can be fun and the south and coast really are nice. It does have a bad rep.

lol.. and what would you mean by "New Jersey" accent?
I moved from northern NJ to SoCal in 1981, at the age of 17. Many people here could tell I was from the east coast by the pronunciation of certain words.
I don't think NJ has it's own accent, it's more that many people there have relatives from 5 boroughs of NY....and I think you pick up on the way they speak.
I can't say I miss it, but it's a great state.....I was born in Morristown, NJ...very historical town, George Washington himself had a headquarters there.

I was ticketed for "unlicensed driving" because a cop was not able to recognize my driving license.
The US embassy to my country and the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission state on their websites that the original, full driving license of my country is good for the US. International driver license or an official translation of my license are recommended but not compulsory. This cop meant to know better and wrote a ticket to me: 54 Dollars and I have to appear at court.
This is unfair!

$54 , thats the lowest priced ticket I have ever hear of. Since it was a moving violation and not just a parking ticket.
Hey Jersey is a great place to work and live for one reason in particular. If you can survive life in New Jersey and adapt to it then you can live and work anywhere else in the world. I have friends and family who vist from the Western US and they are more laid back and cannot stand the pace of life in NJ.
While the state is a butt of many jokes it really is a great place:
1. You get to fully experience all 4 seaons. Hot in the summer, Cold and Snow in the winter, cool and leaves changing in the fall, and the rejuvination of life in the spring.
2. Jobs pay more here then almost anywhere else in the country.
3. It seems that no matter where you are in the State your always within 30 mins of at least 1 mall.
4. Atlantic City if you like to gamble and close enough to enjoy the sights and sounds of New York City and Philly.
5. The Jersey shore is a lot of fun in the summer
There is as much good as there is negative when living in New Jersey. Hey but regardless of where you live (as long as it's not a WARZONE or Camden or Trenton) "Life is what you make of it".

i'm a mexican american that was born and raised in rural arizona; i've spent the last three years living in four major metropolitan areas. so it only makes sense that I'm fascinated by the cultural differences that exist in different places.
one of those areas i've been lucky enough to stay in, is my current location in northern new jersey. this place is fascinating because it's a george bush style conservative state with a VERY large clinton style liberal minority.
as a result, gays and mexican immigrants are either extremely welcome or extremely unwelcome. (in north jersey, there doesn't seem to be much of an in between). and you have big businesses getting away with really illegal things; and little mom and pop stores still surviving like their counterparts in new york city.
the pollution really is bad here. i'm used to the clean air of northern arizona, so when i moved here, the pollution irritated my lungs (my doctor diagnosed that).
it's also very humid here and the weather is also very flakey, compared to arizona or northern california.
if you have the option; it's a totally worthwhile experience because i think of jersey as the real 1950's small town (complete with racism, homophobia and corruption) meets the modern world (also complete with capitalist hippies and tofu eating gays).
