Parents-to-be may be able to have their unborn child screened for homosexuality within a matter of a few years, according to a visiting American expert in bioethics.

Professor Robert Klitzman of Columbia University's Centre for Bioethics has told TV ONE's Close Up that genetic tests are now being developed to look for autism, alzheimers and various types of cancers.

"We may find tests with homosexuality for instance," he said.

This would mean people could decide they do not want a child because it is going be gay, or that they want a child that is gay.

"So over the next few years as we develop more genetic testing, as the price goes down so it becomes very affordable to do this, these will be questions that millions of people will face," Klitzman said.

He said there are now technologies to screen babies for thousands of conditions.

"We can screen foetuses for many, many conditions and we can now also screen embryos before they are implanted in a woman.

"And we can say 'we want these embryos because they don't have this mutation and they're a boy or we want these.' And these are presenting many, many questions and problems."

The New Zealand Government offers screening for newborn babies, helping to pick whether they are likely to have Down Syndrome.

But a group of concerned parents does not believe there should be genetic testing for that.

Asked where the line should be drawn, Klitzman said, "We need to engage in these discussions and think about what kind of person we want."

He said at least in the United States, it's a "free market" with people buying and selling eggs and sperm and designing babies for a variety of things.

Klitzman is in New Zealand to give a give a series of lectures on the issue of scanning unborn babies for genetic defects.

I think they will one day find the gay gene. I think that day will be crucial for gay rights. Once it is proven that people are born gay (rather than choosing to live a different lifestyle) countries that have constitutionally protected human rights will no longer be able to deny those civil rights to gays as an appeasement to right wingers.

Sadly, for those who want to stay in the closet, it may also become slightly less easy to do so.

someone mentioned something about how the whole "people are born gay"/"gay gene" could be used against us which was pretty much explained in this article. basically, if they find the gay gene and are able to isolate it, scientists could work on getting rid of it basically treating it like it's smallpox or something. you have parents ready to abort their baby if they find out that they're gay and it's basically the same whooptie doo all over again.

the thing i want to know is where is the "straight gene" at. they wouldn't even bother wasting their time researching about that because they think there's something wrong with being gay. there's nothing wrong with it.

Wow, that was insightful. Shocking.

I think the article brings up a good spin on it.

Perhaps there is no gay gene but instead a mutation.

Listen you can't program someone to be attracted to someone else. Everyone has tried with these ex-gay therapies. Attraction is not something you choose it is something that comes over you. Hormones. They should start there and see if there are any abnormalities in gay patients.

Of course it cannot be that simple, or perhaps it could be.

Unfortunately, the ultra-fundies will just say that this proves that being gay is a defect. Or they'll claim that the "gay gene" is just a "gay liberal atheist conspiracy".

Either way, they'll definitely dial the derp past 11.

BTW - There was a show about lawyers in the future called "Century City" that had an episode about screening for gay embryos. The episode is called "Sweet Child of Mine" and it's free to watch on Hulu.com.

I can't find the words right now. I'll come back to this topic when I have them.

The fact is we are nowhere close to pinpointing the gay gene to speculate that in "few years" we might be screening for gay babies. They can't even screen for autism 100% yet. Science is still all over the map with "theories" as to how and why children become gay. The latest one credits promiscuous females in the family of gay offspring. Even when there will be a genetic screening for unborn gay babies, I highly doubt there will be high rates of terminations except in the bible belt...if they could afford that type of medical care. :D

So comes the new age of genetic engineering.

If they were able to do that then we'd also be able to choose what hair color we want our child to have, or what personality traits. I personally think this will never come to pass as this technology comes with too many ethical dilemmas.

Human augmentation is going to be in the immediate future. Soldiers being able to see farther, react faster, and analyze deeper will be worth every penny. I bet it all on it.

What that influences or the other way around is unknown but enhancing humans (Steroids, breast implants, hair extensions, makeup) to make lives easier or to get ahead have always been here and will evolve

Bionic Eyes are already being worked on as serious option for patients.

The thing is - we're getting to the point where parents are becoming OK with having a gay child. No, they might not hope for it, but it's less of a huge deal than it used to be.

If a parent wanted a gay baby, and aborted one because it was going to be straight...?

The title of this tread is misleading (at least to me). It says "New tests can find out if a child will be gay or straight", implying (to me, anyway) that such a test was created, but the article is just people guessing (maybe hoping) that such a test will exists one day. I doubt they'll ever create this screening, as they have yet to prove that sexual orientation is even genetic.
