New York Mets 2008

Well it doesn't look like we have to worry about the front four in the rotation. Maine outpitched everyone this spring. Santana is Santana and Pedro is stronger than he's ever been as a Met and has so many pitches to throw at any time, hitters can't sit on anything. Perez has been hot and luke warm which is better than last year when he was hot and cold (like couldn't find the strike zone kind of cold). The fifth spot is a vulnerable one. They gave El Duque and Pelfrey another shot today and El Duque gave up one run through five but had poor velocity. Pelfrey gave up three runs in 4 innings (hardly a good performance).

Hitting seems to be coming along with everyone getting healthier. So looks to be an exciting season.

Oh, btw, Mets put Gotay on waivers and he was claimed by the Braves.

That problematic fifth starter spot has been giving poor sonny fits!It worries me too a bit neither Hernandez or Pelfrey have been impresive in the spring. But the first four should be among the best.I worry a bit over their depth and the dependence on aging Carlos Delgado at first and chronically injured Moises Alou,at 42 not getting any younger legs.

They have three high draft picks to address some of these problems(Atlanta's first round pick,no.18 overall, from losing Tom Glavine back to the Braves, their own first, and a sandwich pick between the first and second round as well from the loss of Glavine)so the worry to me is really only short term.I really hope the Mets use these high picks to improve their ability to add impact young players who can play offense and defense and add enthusiasm, hustle, grit and joy to the game like David Wright does and hopefully Jose Reyes will quickly soon again re-discover.

Mets downed the Chicago White Sox 3-2 in the Civil Rights Game exhibition in Memphis, the last game before the regular season starts Monday against the Florida Marlins.Great game, great cause honoring the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and baseball's part regarding integration starting with Jackie Robinson coming up to the Dodgers in 1947.Hank Aaron was the special guest, one of the greatest and classiest players ever.

John Maine finished off his spring fabulousness by pitching four shutout innings.I just love his team oriented, let's get down to business egoless approach.Seems also like a really great guy,one of David Wright's Virginia buddies and similarly possessing a great makeup to the Mets third base stud.

The Johann Santana era began very positively for the Mets and their fans with a 7-2 win against the Florida Marlins!Santana pitched seven excellent innings allowing two runs on just three hits and adding eight strikeouts.:Dthe Mets exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to blow the game wide open, highlighted by a three-run double by David Wright.:gogirl:

I can't wait for the Shea Stadium finale opener next week with Pedro Martinez starting!Baseball is back, yay!!!:gogirl:

I hate everyone that got to watch baseball today.

Stupid rain!!!

Yanks got rained out too, last home opener at Yankee Stadium.!:(Great to have two teams to root for!Btw Abs,into the Royals?!:p

^ I'm sorry, the who? Roy....als? To which team are you speaking of?

LoL

(although, I went to college in KC for four years, and went to many Royals/Cardinals games. Kauffman Stadium is an absolutely gorgeous stadium! That's about all they got goin' for them...)

The thing that sucked about today was that Jeff Francis, of the Rockies, always dominates us. It doesn't matter when in the season it happens, but if we are going up against him, his fastballs away always seem to doom us. He threw 10 straight balls in the bottom of the first

We capitalized on those walks, and scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Albert homered in the bottom of the second, making the score 5-1.

Cue downpour.

It sucks that none of it will count. Ah well, there's always tomorrow.

I hated watching Cards AND Royals games, even when the Royals were good, because they both played on that God awful pool table like astroturf![-XI loved watching Willie Wilson and Vince Coleman run(before he sucked with the Mets)but you hit a ball up the middle you could have a fucking inside the park home run(Though Darrell Porter or Ted Simmons might have winded up getting thrown out at second):lol:I'm a little before your time,I know it shows...ah,when George Brett was a hottie in KC...and that Tommy Herr at second for the Cards..ah,pure bliss! But I digress....I was so happily surprised when I saw they switched back to natural grass some years back, complimented both their stadiums wonderfully!

That does suck...all the trouble Francis gives you guys,he's being pounded on the ropes and suddenly karma rips into your bottom and screams"SUCKERS"!Think of it in a positive way.....it's only postponing the inevitable and your Cards will finally get his number!(*8*)

A great win last night in Johann Santana's debut with the Mets...Pedro's going tonight, and nothing from sonny!:(

Pedro wasn't sharp, and of even more concern he hurt his hamstring and is getting an MRI tomorrow.:(Hope it will only be a short term problem.Mets lose 5-4 on a walk off home run bottom of the tenth to a no name rookie. Not as fun as last night with Santana's debut and first victory with the Mets.

Well so much for our 1-2 punch :(

Ya know I never expected Pedro to stay healthy for the whole season, I knew he would be out at some point. BUT THE FIRST GAME???
I feel really bad for the guy, after all that work he did to come back from his injuries and then to have this happen. But he heard a POP and that doesn’t sound good, it could cost him 4-6 weeks. Let’s hope it’s not serious and will be back sooner than later. While we don’t know how long he will be out, I gotta say, I never wanted to spend the whole season watching him pitch and wondering every time he threw the ball if that was the last one. But If the Mets are going to do it this year, I hope it’s not without Pedro

So for now it will be a four man rotation, the Mets don't need a fifth starter until April 12. By then, Pedro could be back. I have said it before but no one hears me, Sosa has given us a great pitching performance, what about him coming of the pen in an emergency. This guy's grown into a decent reliever. Now, can he deliver if the team needs him to start? I love him in the long man position but how about him in the starting rotation. And let’s not forget Maine, with a spring ERA of 1.78 he could easily become our #2 guy. Then there is my boy Figueroa I love that kid, maybe he needs to come out of the minors to help us out for a while. We also have Jon Niese who I raved about in another post, or Parnell, I think he is in AA. Please don’t get me started on Pelfrey, with his 36 base runners in 17 innings, HE AIN’T READY! Plus I thought Hernandez was pitching better last time out with part of his high leg kick back in the windup, and a lot less pain in his plant foot. He should be off the DL on 4/13

Sit tight. This is a good team. With or without Pedro.

So although we won’t know till later today after an MRI, is a personal setback for Pedro and a downer to be sure, but it ain’t the end of the world for the Mets.
For the past three seasons, we have pretty much been without Pedro, he was shut down for the last two weeks of the season with foot problems. In 2006, he was out with a torn calf tendon AND a torn rotator cuff. .
Now, a year later after major shoulder surgery and him being close to 37, I did not expect him to be capable of doing what he had not done since 2004 when he was with the Red Sox, and that is pitch a full season.
It was going to happen sooner or later, better now than the last week of the season. Maybe Pedro will be back soon, maybe not. Either way, Pedro's work here has already been started. He helped lead the team out of the funk, brought fans back to the ballpark, and sent the message that the Mets were open for business again. He's an fun guy in the clubhouse and his comeback has been an inspiration for his teammates. But I think one his greatest contributions to this club have been off the field.

Sooooo no panic from this Mets fan, Santana is the unquestioned ace of the staff, I thought his changeup was out of this world but did you watch him throw that 93 MPH fastball? Awesome! Dare I say it? could the Mets finally have a no hitter?
John Maine is a solid No. 2 or 3, Perez well he could go either way, the jury is still for sure out on him. So now we may have to find a replacement for Pedro. AGAIN! . For the Mets, life will go on, with or without Pedro. Usually without.

My bigger concern is with out lack of right handed hitters, THAT concerns me a lot more than losing Pedro.
Thank God we have a couple of switch hitters like Pagan who swings the bat well righty, By the way, how happy was I to see him get Alou’s spot in the line up. Oh, Yes I was! Watching the opposing team managers scratching their heads and scrambling to make pitching changes when one of our switch hitters comes up to the plate. Ya gotta love that.

Last nights loss had its fun moments. Pedro’s 12 pitch turn at the plate was a joy to watch and the fans gave him a standing ovation when he finally struck out, Pedro loving every minute of wearin down that Marlins pitcher. Now that’s one of the reasons I love baseball, when stuff like that happens.

So here’s a big question, who is gonna pitch opening day at Shea on Tuesday. It was to be Pedro, but now? I know the rotation puts Perez in that position and someone suggested last night they could use Pelfrey. NO NO NO!!! Scratch Santana from the Sunday Atlanta game and put him in Tuesday’s game at Shea. That way we accomplish two things, first we put Santana on the mound for our big opening day and second,:badgrin: the Braves don’t get a look at him, AGAIN! :p

Glad to see you back,sonny!(*8*)it is tough to possibly lose Pedro for an etended period.I saw something recently regarding promising pitchers the Mets had in their system who can one day soon make an impact, and I remember Niese's name as one of them.Do you know the others?

Pedro is a joy to watch and gives his best effort no matter what....that at bat was classic.Hopefully the MRI report will not be as bad as thought likely and Pedro just misses a couple of starts at most. The season is young and I agree there is a whole lot of positives with this team to bring Mets fans too far down in the dumps regarding Pedro's injury. It does suck, though!:(

Love to have one of those lobsided wins when both the pitching and offense are outstanding.Perez was very strong tonight, and that David Wright moon shot...wow!12-0 victory for Mets over Marlins takes some of the sting away from last night's disappointing 5-4 ten inning loss. But it appears Pedro Martinez may be out 4-6 weeks with a strained hamstring and it's tough. We have the ability to ride it out though, but need consistency from the offense, solid defense and extra starters like Sosa and Nelson Figueroa to just keep the Mets in the game each start.

Well with the MRI results back, it's going to be a minimum of 4-6 weeks for Pedro. Although they said that him walking off the field under his own power was a good sign, Pedro uses his legs to give him torque so you never know how it is going to affect him.

So for right now, I guess the Mets stand pat with the 4 man rotation. El Duque will have completed his DL assignment before Pedro comes back and then when he does come back, the Mets will have to make a decision about Pelfrey.

I've gotta say that I'm extrememly happy with Pagan. I like his hustle. Another hard decision for Willie when Alou comes back.

Sausy, I can think of at least four to watch, of course they already took my advice and brought Figueroa up yesterday ;) Then of course there is Jon Niese a guy I have talking about as well, defiantly a player!
Rob Parnell looks good, he is a righty down in AA and was the Florida State League mid season All Star last year. I think he had an ERA of just under 4.
Jose Sanchez has promise as does Eddie Comacho. It just seems to me like we have enough raw talent out there to keep me from worrying very much about Pedro.

Perez was sharp last night, I liked that nasty slider of his. But of course everyone was on top of their game last night, I would Loved to have seen Wright hit a triple which was all he needed for the cycle. THAT would have been awesome.
David showed off that Gold Glove a couple of times as well. But we can’t forget my boy Pagan, what a great night he had!!.
And oh man, was Belton robbed, that ball he blasted clearly hit the rail making it a home run. When they reversed the ruling and called it a double I went ape shit. Umps, ya gotta love em :grrr::mad:

So I was jokingly suggesting we try and get Santana to pitch at opening day on Tuesday, it looks like they will stay with the rotation an give it to Perez. In addition to that, looking at the schedule, what they should do is put Pelfrey back a day and start Santana on his regular 5th day, that way he sees the Phillies twice, once at home and again away. I prefer that over Santana pitching on Sunday cause then he won’t see the Phillies at all this month. Make sense?? Willie??? Can you hear me???

I totally agree with you that we can keep it going without Pedro, we can handle 4-6 weeks without him, prolly need a couple of rehab starts first but he will be back. Then El Duque will be back on 4/13. So many guys are wriggling their hands and predicting doom, which is just plain nuts. We will be fine with Figueroa and Sosa. We don’t even need a 5th starter till 4/12.
Another thing I am sick of hearing is should we bring in another starter,
the answer is NO!! unless it’s Brian Bannister,
No, No not even him, come on, what will that say to the guys we already have to do the job, how will they feel. Come on Omar, a little confidence please. Don’t make me come down there and hurt you. @@@

By the way Gambit, I hear what you are sayin, I love that kid Pagan, he is one hell-of-an athlete, as far as I am concerned based on what I see so far, Alou can stay out as long as he needs to, I am in no hurry for him to return, only to get hurt again.

I like Pagan alot, but more right now as a fourth outfielder who can do well with filling in.I'm not sure he's more than that, but he can be a very important part of the team playing whatever outfield position is needed.Great attitude and love the way he plays.

Beltran is also starting the season hot,too bad he lost a home run like that.Ryan Church is strong defensively and hitting the ball very well so far,as is Brian Schneider...hopefully Church can blossom like Paul O'Neill did with the Yankees after he was acquired from Cleveland. That was a great throw he made, wasn't it?!:D

It's almost like you want to unveil Santana as the Mets secret weapon, the way you want to hold him back against the Braves and Phillies!:lol:Well,we are early in the season and no reason to panic with Pedro out,we both agree on thast. We have enough in the organization who can start and enough of a positive future with starters it will be all right.Oh yes....that play David Wright made was outstanding! He has all the tools to be a great defensive third baseman, just needs to be consistent with his throwing.

I'm not sure if we need another "4th outfielder". We already have the best in the game in Endy "The Catch" Chavez. I think Pagan can be a good every day player. He's not going to hit a ton of home runs but he is going to get hits and he is going to hustle.

I am a little worried about Pedro reinjuring the same hamstring and I'm getting a gut feeling that the Mets are minimizing the news for fan morale purposes. Endy Chavez was out several months with his hamstring (although I realize he couldn't walk off the field on his own and Pedro could) because that kind of injury is tough to heal and you often get injuries to the same place.

Bullpen has been looking good and I like Sosa stepping up in the big spots. I just hope the Mets don't panic and deconstruct the bullpen because one pitcher is out for a short time. We can live with a fill in and hope we score more than we give up. Last year, dead bullpen arms killed us at the end. We don't want a repeat performance.

My two cents for the day....

No No Saucy, I was only joking about the Braves, I just wanted Johan to pitch Tuesday at opening day at Shea. I can't wait for those Braves to get a look at him. I also want the Phillies to see Santana at least twice this month, that's why I suggested he pitch on Saturday instead of Sunday.
Our boy Wright seems only to have trouble with his throwing when he has a second or two to think about it. As you say he needs to be a little more consistant. I know David is woirking his butt off to correct that problem.

I am so pumped about the next two series of Braves and Phillies I can hardly keep from peeing in my pants thinking about it.

The Pedro thing had me and my dad talking the other day, and he thought something similar.
The thing is when Pedro comes back, how long before something else happens, he is getting old and his body is not working for him so well. The other thing is, he wasn't really pitching all that well before the hammy went out.
Now I hear El Duque is after the #2 spot if Pelfrey stays in the 5th hole. Stay tuned for that one.
I wanna see more of Hernandez before I judge him, he has not proved he has overcome that plant foot injury, and we know that new low kick windup ain't workin for him. But as you say, so far the pen has been effective, but we only played 3 games, lets see how long the starters last in each outing and how deep into the pen Willie has to go. Cause as we know, the shorter time on the mound the starters last and the longer the pen has to produce was a major part of what killed us last year. Of course the dead arms didn't help either.
I like Sosa too, he is our best long guy, and yes, I agree, we can make it without
any major overhaul in pitching. Give the kids we got a shot.

I'm with you hoping that Santana can face the Phillies a couple of times this month.Do you know who appears to be the Shea final opening day starter for the Mets?

I just love to watch David Wright play....he just loves the game somuch and never takes anything for granted. He will never stop working to better himself,so I'm sure fairly soon he will be considered among the best all-around third basemen in the game, and not just known for his offense.Btw,have you notied it seems in almost every photo he's doing the tongue sticking thing?I ain't complaining,I like it actually!;)

I dono for sure who will pitch the last game at shea.
Ya kinnda need a scorecard theses days just to keep up with the pitching staff.;)
Wright cracks me up with that tongue thing, he has said it is a habit he has had as far back as he can rememeber.

Mets/Braves rained out last night. :( make up will be a double header in mid May.
