New York Mets 2009-10 Winter report

I have been writing about what might happen with Carlos Delgado. As I wrote the other day the Mets spent time this week end in PR watching him play in order to evaluate him. So far he has been playing only as the DH and has been playing well batting .353 with one HR and 2 RBIs; he is currently 6 for 15. But he had not fielded until yesterday when the Mets came to town and he finally played first which is something we have not seen him do since May of last year. Sunday he was 0-2 with a walk and was replaced in the field in the Top of the fifth inning. Why was he replaced? Good question, but it really doesn’t tell us much. What we do know is that the Mets have a strong desire to bring Carols back.
I dono if he Mets can make a decision as important as bringing him back with so little of a look see I mean can he play in least say 130 games? Yesterday’s five innings at first base isn’t much to go on is all I’m sayin. I keep going back and forth on what I want here, I can not forget what a powerhouse he can be even playing for two years with that injury naggin at him. I love the guy I just don’t ant any more injury problems NOT IN 2010. Then there is Murphy, he has been progressing so well and is destined for stardom, do we let him sit even though Daniel would bring great strength to our bench. I dono, I change my mind every hour; Seriously, I seem to be more obsessed by this Delgado thing than I am about getting a catcher and starter.
We should know soon I am guessing some word will be out by the end of the week or beginning of next at the latest. Delgado…Murphy? Murphy…Delgado?

I have a cute Daniel Murphy story you may not have heard. Back early last year when Delgado went down and Murphy replace him at first; Daniel did not have a first baseman’s glove, so Delgado let him borrow his. Trouble was Delgado’s glove was a Franklin and Murphy had a contract with Wilson. So Daniel covered the name Frankin with duct tape and wrote Wilson on it with a marker. How cute is that?? :D
Murphy had mentioned this to Keith Hernandez who then pointed it out live on the air while doing the play by play that day, they even showed a close up Daniel wearing the glove with the tape on it. Keith called out to Wilson to “Send the kid a glove, there is Fed Ex ya know”
I’m bettin Daniel got his Wilson glove pretty quick after that.

Nice story on the Murphy glove deal, Sonny. I'm not sure we need to sign Delgado, I only see trouble ahead, he's not a kid anymore, and the body may wear down in other parts than his hip. I think Branch Rickey, former Brooklyn Dodger GM said, better to get rid a player a year too early than a year too late. I think Carlos is at/near the end of his NL days, might still be able to DH in the other league for awhile. He was a pretty good Met over the years.

I hear what you are saying Syam and until recently I agreed completely, I had been saying over and over it’s time for him to go. It’s just that so many guys are talking to me and sayin that Carlos should be back for at least one more year I just keep going back and forth. We can not forget his 104 homers over the last four seasons but like you wrote what about injuries and can/should we risk that. In any event the Mets watched him over the weekend and first reports are that he is “not moving well” which is something I for one do not want to hear. Sounds like he might be best suited for a DH spot; supposedly the Blue jays are interested in him. As I write this I think I am going back to my original thought…Daniel Murphy at first.;)

For those who wondered what ever happened to Argenis Reyes, The Dodgers have signed him to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training.

I love David Wright's attitude....no excuses for power ineffectiveness this past season, especially at CitiField. He'll work with Howard Johnson and make the needed adjustments mentioned, like pulling more at times.Sure he'll still use the whole field and not get too pull conscious, just pull more situationally...he knows what it takes to make him a consistent.300+ hitter in every full season he's played with the Mets.

Damn cute story about Daniel Murphy's glove adjustment....and Keith Hernandez' good natured fun with it.I love Carlos Delgado but I think unless they are certain Daniel Murphy won't cut it(his August-September hot streak leads me to believe he most certainly can build on it next season)it would be a very unfortunate error of judgement.Carlos will be too limited defensively(and Murphy made HUGE strides defensively at first)and though he probably still can hit it would be better if he moved on to DH with an American League club.Even if Daniel does well next year though,I don't think he can keep slugging Ike Davis from taking over in 2011.And I'm so jealous that through sonny's Cyclone connection he got to speak with Ike!(!)Damn, you're lucky!..|

I knew you would enjoy that D Wright story saucy, David will be Kevin Burkhart’s guest on SNY Hot Stove Thursday 7 PM (repeats all week).
David will also sit down with Mike Francesa for an interview on WFAN today (Wednesday) at 2pm.I will of course watch the Burkhart show but not Francesa. I have no use for that Yankee lovin Mets bashin SOB. I am surprised David agreed to be on that blow hole’s show.

Saucy I am hoping my friendship with Ike Davis continues, I first met him in Brooklyn in ’08 and tried connecting with him as often as I could. Like a lot of the Cyclones Ike always made himself available to the fans. But it was in June of ’09, when Ike made his AA debut, that I found out he was a very tight friend of my bud who pitches for the Cyclones. It was about that time I really began to get to know him. I have spoken with him many times in person and once on the phone and I hope the friendship grows next year. I know I can learn so much from him and he is one of the sweetest kids you wanna meet. Down to earth, genuine and honest. I really like and respect that in a person.

In Jose Reyes news, he has been doing his rehab at a facility on Long Island. Reyes has a house on LI and is working hard. From all reports he is doing well, hitting, fielding, and getting ready to begin sprinting and doing more intense agility drills. No more word of Reyes playing a game or two in Winter Ball, but hope he will soon. It would be great to se him in action and perhaps relieve a few minds about how he is doing. But for now he is staying put on LI and not traveling to St. Lucie. It’s ok dude, take your time and get strong.

The Molina saga continues, he wanted three years, but that may have changed, and the Mets want one year with a vesting option. We can not give him three years, NO FUCKIN WAY! I heard yesterday that he may have lowered his price and is beginning to think two years. We don’t need him or any pitcher catcher for that matter that long a deal, Thole will be ready long before that. Besides I can not imagine what Benji is thinking, he had better take our offer cause no one is going to give him three years at this point is he nutz? Take the year kid that’s all she is gonna write for you. Hey Benji look behind you, is that Rod Barajas?

As to our starter, it is beginning to look more and more that Joel Pineiro may end up our guy. He is the only pitcher I hear about talking to the Mets on a regular basis. There are others but most of the chat lately has been with Pineiro. Soooo we will see.

In the where are they now department, yesterday I told you A. Reye has signed with the Dodgers and now Ryan Church has signed a one-year deal with the Pirates and Ramon Castro is going back to Chicago as their backup catcher.

Nice update, Sonny. I see where the GM's are joining the owners at their winter meetings in Phoenix, possibly some deals may be done there, or perhaps a signing or two.

In the are you fuckin kiddin me department comes this

I just got a text that made my stomach turn.
Carlos Beltran will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery to re-repair the knee that he injured last season. The Mets said that Beltran suffered "worsening of osteoarthritis" in his knee during the off-season".
Beltran will miss the next three months, meaning that he probably won't be ready for opening day on April 5,
and of course he will have to undergo a strict rehab regiment before he ever returns.
The hope is that Beltran will miss only a few weeks in April, not a repeat of last year when he missed 80 games. So we will have to start with a different lineup than we thought obviously Carlos won't be hitting cleanup in front of Jason Bay.

I'm tryin not to make to big a deal outta this, I'm glad he has the repair done now a better time to have all the surgery and other preparations to get ready for the season.
It's just that after what happened last year with all the injuries this whole thing just kinda gives me chills.

I am sure Kevin Burkhardt will have more on his live Hot Stove show tonight

Breathe Joey breathe :help:

Just finished reading about the Beltran surgery, it's making me not even looking forward to spring training. What's Mookie or "Nails" doing this spring?? Might as well bring them in for a look-see...

This Beltran thing is getting weird. I got like four calls already this morning and they keep coming
It stared with the news that Carlos needed to have knee surgery. First reports suggested that he would be getting micro-fracture surgery which would put an abrupt end to his 2010 season and perhaps his career. Fortunately it turns out that Beltran was getting his knee scoped. But wait now there is more. Beltran reportedly had this procedure on his knee without telling the Mets and without their permission. What people are thinking now is that after not firing most of the training staff and the Mets blaming other team doctors Beltran just does not trust the Mets medical staff with his body and career. Remember last year Beltran after having been diagnosed with a bone bruise on his knee seeked a second opinion with a doctor in Colorado. If this is true (and I am sure there will be a lot more today) This is not a way to run a professional organization. The Mets were blamed by many me included for keeping secrets about the players health and not handling the injuries well. In addition if this is true and I stress IF you would think the Mets would have learned something from last year.
There are several components to the news that Carlos Beltran had knee surgery without the permission of the New York Mets. The first part is the baseball aspect of this. If Beltran is unable to resume baseball activities for 12 weeks, it is not reasonable to expect him back before May at the earliest. So especially now, the Mets need to plan around Angel Pagan in center field. He is a better alternative than anything remaining on the market, he is already on the team, so he will cost nothing in trade, and should Beltran return at full strength, he can resume his role as a strong fourth outfielder.
Meanwhile, two other aspects of this are how the Mets should handle the fact that Carlos Beltran chose this procedure rather than accept recommendations of the Met doctors, and what it means going forward.
The answer to the first part is prolly nothing. A healthy Beltran is key to any plans the 2010 Mets have, and alienating your player further- that is, beyond providing him and the other players with medical advice that they can’t trust- is a terrible idea on any number of fronts. You could lose the player mentally, you could lose the other players as well, turn the fans against Beltran or the team.
And who do the Mets really think the fans will side with? The player who was so concerned about the team doctors that he went against their wishes in an effort to heal himself to get back on the field? Or the team who, whether as a result of miscommunication from the doctors or publicly referring to timetables that simply bore little relation to reality, were wrong again and again about if and when players on the Mets who were injured would cease to be injured? My vote goes to Beltran
Then there is this: Carlos Beltran’s decision pretty clearly blows apart the claims by the Mets that the players trust the team doctors. This is not to say it is fair for them not to do so- that would require information concerning the specific diagnoses and accuracy of them, information we simply do not have. Don’t ya think?
But if the players, following the 2009 season, simply don’t trust the Mets’ doctors anymore, then the Mets have a responsibility to replace them. Otherwise, things could degenerate to the point that one of the team’s best players will have knee surgery against the team’s wishes… a second time.
Another call tells me that the Mets could take some form of action against Carlos. We should expect the Mets will hold a conference call with reporters later today, which they are expected to provide further details.
We are still not clear if the Mets were aware of the surgery, but, in either case, they did not approve of him having the procedure supposedly the Mets were made aware of the surgery either at the ‘11th hour,’ or, possibly, during the procedure.
I am just going to wait till the Mets make some sort of official statement later and of course there will be plenty on this tonight from Kevin Burkhardt who at this moment is hard at work getting the facts together

Good GOD!

Well, Stan, here's another fine mess you've gotten me into. The Mets front office is no better than a Laurel and Hardy film; miscommunication, misjudgement, and blaming all around them but themselves.

There is always Fernando Martinez for centerfield, depending on what kind of spring he has, if he's recovered from his ailments, and doesn't get hurt again. It could turn out to be a blessing in disguise, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Well, Stan, here's another fine mess you've gotten me into. The Mets front office is no better than a Laurel and Hardy film; miscommunication, misjudgement, and blaming all around them but themselves.

Seriously, and where the Hell is Omar?? They put this dufus Rico in to run the conference call and all he did was make it clear that the Mets panties are all in a bunch cause, oh boo hoo, they did not give Carlos the official ok to have the surgery.
Both doctors, the Mets and Carlos own, agreed the surgery needed to happen. The Mets as usual wanted to drag it out get a third opinion, bla blab la same ole shit they pulled with the way they handled so many guys last year. This press conference was a PR nightmare and they came off looking really bad. When asked, the Mets said Carlos was not insubordinate but sent a letter from the lawyers to cover themselves. Cover them selves for what? So why say he was not insubordinate when obviously the Mets feel he was. All the Mets had to do was say Carlos had the surgery and we wish him all the best for a speedy recovery, instead they huffed and puffed and created this nightmare. Wanna know what the headline will be tomorrow? Where was Omar? And who’s in charge?

Look, Carlos was told by two doctors to have the surgery and the Mets said wait, so Carlos said fuck you I'm having the surgery, and good for him
Once again I ask where was Omar?? Well the bull shit story was that he was in a plane with Jeff on the way back from Arizona. Are you fuckin kiddin me?? Jeff owns his own plane he could have left when ever he wanted to. he could have had the conference call with Omar and then left for NY or held the conference till they arrived.. Please don't insult my intelligence with more Mets BS and lies. Omar can't hold a press conference we all know that but he was the only one who spoke to both Borus and Beltan and could have given us more info.
Bottom line: The Mets ate pissed because Carlos had the surgery without approval but who’s approval?
The Mets doctor Alcheck and Carlos’ Doctor Stedman (a world class knee man) both told the Mets that they approved the surgery the workman’s comp papers had already been done and approved
WTF right do the Mets have to ask for a third opinion. It boils down to the Mets anger over the fact that while they did give the ok for Carlos to see a private doctor but not to have the surgery. So what are you telling me that Omar and Jeff had to approve the surgery after Both doctors said he needed it?????
Now the Mets have sent a letter reserving their right to challenge the contract which in their sick minds Carlos violated. Great move, upset Borus anger Beltran and piss the Hell outta the media and all the fans.
By the way, Kevin Burkhardt has said he supports the Mets position and this is “all on Beltran” Kevin, you know I love you, but dude you are sooo wrong here. I’m afraid to listen to his show tonight and hear Kevin stay true to his bosses and throw Beltran under the bus. Shame on you Kevin, I thought you were better than that.

I AM SURE I WILL HAVE MORE ON THIS TOMMORROW, RIGHT NOW I WANNA JUST GO TO THE GYM AND BEAT A PUNCHING BAG TO DEATH. I REALLY NEED TO DO THAT NOW.](*,)

Carlos Speaks

In a statement issued last night Carlos Beltran through his agent Scott Boras issued the following statement
I am totally surprised by the reaction to my recent knee surgery. Any accusations that I ignored or defied the team’s wishes are simply false. I also spoke to Omar Minaya about the surgery on Tuesday. He did not ask me to wait, or to get another doctor’s opinion. He just wished me well. No one from team raised any issue until Wednesday, after I was already in surgery. I do not know what else I could have done. The most important thing here is that the surgery was a total success and I expect to be back on the field playing the game I love sooner rather than later.”

So for me that should close the book on this debacle. The Mets need now to back off and let the man heal. Nothing good can come from any more hostile talk from the Mets organization. Unless you want to alienate the fans, disrupt the morale of the team and make even worse Boras mad  let it be guys!

Next up is the lineup and what to do while Carlos heals. I have read as many of you have about all kinds of wacky ideas bringing in all kinds of people to fill the gap in center field. To that I say hold up; we don’t need to do anything but utilize the talent currently in our club. The center field solution is a very simple one. Carlos Beltran has been mentoring Angel Pagan and has a very good relationship with him. Carlos has had Angel to his home in the off season working with the kid, he believes in Angel and that he can get the job done. I have already said I agree with that idea. Angel did an excellent job out there last season; he was also outstanding with his bat. A doubles machine who twice last year came up one hit short of the cycle. So he is good offensively and defensibly his biggest problem his base running which I have described in the past as goofy. Mental mistakes like the ones he makes worries me cause I am not sure you can teach that as easily as you can other fundamentals but still I have confidence he will overcome that. What you want to remember is that he is an outstanding athlete and has a determination, drive and massive desire to do well. He wants to make the team better and will be proud and humbled by the opportunity to fill in for the big guy while Carlos heals. Give him the job; perhaps bring K-mart up to help out maybe this year he will find his major league swing so missing in previous tries.

While Carlos heals We can get though this; it is not as big a deal as some are making it out to be

Our opening day line up
1. Reyes SS
2. Castillo 2nd
3. Wright 3rd
4. Bay LF
5. Francoeur RF
6. Murphy 1B
7. Pagon CF
8. Molina? /Santos/Blanco C
9. Pitcher

Let’s go Mets 2010!

I agree, I think the lineup should be sufficient enuff to carry the load while Beltran is out, providing Molina is the catcher. It will put a little more burden on the pitching, so hopefully there is one close to signing soon. The Dodgers also apparently have interest in Piniero, so let's not sleep on this Omar! Are ya listenin'???? Knock, knock, anyone home???? Mets? Mets? It's almost February......

I feel for sonny, all that shit that must have been going through his head in the Beltran debacle.Glad to see he's more positive now....Pagan will do fine in Beltran's place until he returns in May sometime.I'm glad to see that Carlos is having a mentoring effect on Angel and that can only be a positive in his development. He did show quite a talent when given the opportunity in Beltran's absence. We don't need to go elsewhere for an every day cf while Carlos recoves from that arthtoscopic knee surgery. This may be Carlos' last season with the Mets...with one season to go on his contract after this one,and Carlos going on 35 when a new contract will take effect in 2012...with the knee questions and his ability to remain a plus defensive player in center due to that,no way they give him a big money re-up.

I just don't wanna talk about the Beltran mess any more than I have to.Hopefully the drama is over soon and Carlos can give the Mets 100-120 games and top notch performance we're used to coming back without a hitch as scheduled in May,and Pagan holds the fort well and is strongly considered as the center fielder of the future*crosses fingers, toes, and eyes*

Syam,I'm just not sold on Joel Pineiro. He's been far more mediocre than productive in his career, doesn't have upside potential at his age and while he would be a fine fourth or fifth starter for the Yanks,or Boston....the Mets need a more proven, compliment to Johann Santana.Who appears to be healthy now and ready to lead the staff again. But nothing's ever assured in Mets Land,as we are constantly reminded. One relatively good year from Pineiro(and if I'm correct a less stellar second half)isn't going to impress me.

Thankfully the Mets have one less offseason headache in signing John Maine to a one year,3 mil contract avoiding arbitration. We seriously need Mike Pelfrey to rebound from a very distressing regression last year....he appears in great shape ready convince the doubters he can make the adjustments necessary to move forward.Whatever we get from Ollie Perez is a bonus, but not looking for much.Excited to see how Jon Niese and Fernand Nieve impact the battle for the rotation. But I'd really like the see the Mets go after Ben Sheets if his demands get more realistic.

I knew sonny David Wright would be ready to go and work his hot butt(Yea,I'm bad;))off and get into a positive frame of mind entering the new season. He's just too good a player to allow Citi Field's dimensions controversy and trying to hold a lineup by himsself with everyone going down to screw him up.He's in great shape, hungry to better himself and help this club regain the respect it once had.

I love the lineup more than last year, especially when Beltran returns.Francouer I believe will build on the strong play he displayed after his trade to the Mets,Jason Bay will bring a tough, clutch power bat and all out atitude on the field, and if Bengie Molina is signed he will bring leadership to the pitching staff and a solid contributing bat with some power.I'd love to add depth to the bench and of course a solid, high end starting pitcher.

Carlos Delgado, great as he was for the middle of the order I think should go.Daniel Murphy I believe is enough of the real deal to give you a very solid transition this year over to future slugging sensation Ike Davis.I read so many good things about Ike as a person...he's going to be very well loved as he grows as a Met.
God sonny, you know how jealous I am you actually knowing Ike Davis....it's got me all atwitter!:DSo much fun to know the future stars of the Mets,or other clubs as some will fulfill their potential elsewhere, and see them just loving playing and talking the game!..|

Hey Saucy great hearing from you. I have been wondering what you thought of the Beltran thing.
I am so on board with you on that and sooo done talking about it. Yeah I did kinda go of the deep end there a bit my dad actually commanded me to spend the weekend with him to calm me and talk me down. My uncle/Godfather Joe who taught me to pitch will be in town this week so I am looking forward to spending time with him. My team gears up again in June.
So we had a little hiccup already but I am not concerned at all and happy you agree that pagan can hold it down for us. Let’s just get the Molina thing done and another pitcher and we are good to go

As far as DWright goes, I am so excited about his outlook, he has come out of hiding after keeping a very low profile this winter and I have seen him a few times over the last week, he looks great and keeping upbeat about 2010. I also mentioned he was going to be on with Mike Francesa and did not want to watch cause I just do not like the way Mike trashed the Mets. He was very hard on both David and Ryan Church and that bugged me. David was so irritated (and for him that takes a lot) over some of the things Mike said that he refused to go on with him in St Lucie last year but when Mike invited David o the show again David agreed to come on. I figured if David can forgive Mike so can me, ;) so I ended up watching the interview which I thought went very well. You can watch most of it here:

Saucy you mentioned Ike Davis, I have met a lot of Cyclones and stay friendly with a few of em but Ike has always been special, he is such an incredible cool down to earth guy ya have to love him. Reese Havens is a lot like that as well, just a sweet sweet guy, plus of course I am so in love with their baseball prowess and picking their brains. Davis mentioned that Reese may be switching to second form short this year, more on that as I find out. I have been going to Brooklyn to watch and cheer theses guys since my dad and I first went in 2001.
Speaking of my Cyclones, The boys are chompin at the bit to get started again June 18This year the team will be managed by Wally Backman the great Mets second baseman and have come of to celebrate the start of the season 10 with a newly designed logo

Hey syam I love the way you are yelling at Omar in your post, I like to do that too  I would have to agree with Saucy abut Pineiro, we let the big fish get away and I just can’t get that worked up over what is left. BUT, I have a very very good feeling about both Maine and Pelf I have been keeping an eye on what they have been doing and lemme tell ya something great may come from both of them. I watched Maine just the other day and he is completely pain free, you will recall he had a very decent September last year after coming back. I also like what I hear from big Pelf. Look, all that dude needs is to be able to pitch with men on and stop going into fits worrying about em. The kid has the stuff but mentally he just looses it. Get over that and he will have a great season

Now, I'm not saying Piniero will make or break the Mets, it's just time to get another pitcher onboard just in case an injury (that never happens) pops up. Piniero, at least, generally gives you innings, if not much else. I agree he has been very mediocre thru his career. Once the Super Bowl is over, I'll be chomping at the bit for Beisbol.

I am hearing what you are saying Syam it just that I can not get all that excited about who we may end up with in the starting rotation. What’s left out there just does not excite me.
But we need pitching (what team doesn’t) and will be glad to get the help. As to Pineiro the Mets are not the only ones talking to him, the Angels, Dodgers, Nats and Cubs are all interested as well.
Then there is Ben Sheets, who will be auditioning tomorrow (Tuesday) in Louisiana. Also giving him a look will be the Brewers, Dodgers, Cardinals, Rangers, and Blue Jays.
My focus is away from all that right now concentrating instead on the progress of Maine and Pelfrey. Those are the guys I wanna see come back strong, and I’ll tell ya I have a real good feeling about both of them.

I hope you're right about Pelf and Maine, I much prefer promoting or getting better from within the organization. I'm sort of high on the chances of Jon Niese doing well. He was pitching great in the minors and had one really good start with the Mets before getting injured, so hope he has matured to the point of being in the rotation this season. Watched the end of a game from 1995 on MLB last nite, Mets-Reds, Mets led 11-4 going to bottom of the eighth. Gave up 6 in the 8th and 3 in the ninth to lose 13-11. I think I've seen nightmares like that all too often lately. Brutal....Ah, spring, just around the corner.

Yeah I remember that Reds game, but wanna forget it, like you said Syam we had to many like that :(

Benjie Moilina has rejected the latest Mets offer. He still insists on three years and the Mets are offering him a year with a team option for a second. There is no way I want the Mets to give him any more than that. Enough is enough; we have been talking to this clown since early December…let the Mariners have him. I have thought he would make a great fit, his bat, his ability to work with guys like Pelfrey, Niese even Maine would have been a big plus for us. But I am tired of this, so get lost Benji who the hell do you think is gonna give you a three-year deal, not the Mets that’s for sure. I don’t even look at this as such a bad thing, I am glad the Mets are showing patience and not giving in to him. Actually the Mets have continually displayed patience this offseason. And it continued with Molina basically saying here is the offer take it or go out and find a better one. So while Benjie is out begging for someone to give him what he wants the Mets can focus on the area they need to address the most, starting pitching. I dono who will be a Met starter but ya have to think Joel Pinero, Jon Garland and Ben Sheets, with Pineiro the main focus

In better news today Jeff Francoeur signed a one-year contract today to avoid arbitration. Francoueur will make $5 million in 2010, a $1.6 million bump in salary from last season. I loved what Jeff aid today "I'm thrilled to get it out of the way a month before spring training, Once we get to Florida, I can concentrate just on baseball. All of us have a lot to prove this season and I can't wait to get going."
Me too babe...me too:D
